I think I'm going to pick this game up at my local Hollywood Video on the way home. I'm willing to put up with the extreme difficulty if it is at least FAIR, as opposed to relying on cheap killing like most old 8-bit titles would. However, from all the rave reviews this game has been getting, I have to believe that there is some tangible reward for those willing to tough through the beginning growing pains..

While greater weapons, spells, armor, etc. are the most common rewards, I feel that the greatest reward is knowing that you just took down the enormous boss that was menacing you mere seconds ago. The game certainty didn't help you do it, and it wasn't because the bosses are easy. It was all YOU. (...and possibly one or two other players that you might have summoned to help you fight through a particularly difficult area).

Also, for those of you who don't mind some slight spoilers (what the boss is/looks like/ how to kill it), here is a video of the archdemon of the Shrine of Storms. Now imagine that you just defeated it, and the feeling you would have.

Neither marriage nor Demon's Souls is as hard as you think they are. Demon's Souls is fair but firm when Compared to old school games like Wizardry, nethack, SMB2 (the real one), Final Fantasy 1, Dragon Warrior 1 or Xcom. All of them would result in a swift death if you didn't prep your guy right and you learned this by dying.

"Demon's'ss's' Souls" is a game that makes me scared. Even looking at the case gives me the heebie jeebies. It's simply not for everyone, so I don't blame Yahtzee's review. It's difficult, but the difficulty really comes from not being prepared and not persevering once you die (because everyone WILL die playing this).

If you die in Demon's Souls it's because you fucked up somehow. You just have to pay attention to your surroundings and play defensively.

Personally, I like it because it's rare to find a game that's hard for the right reasons.

Atlus America doesn't make games. They cherry pick and localize the best niche games from Japan to release here and they are a subsidiary by Atlus Japan so they get dibbs on those.
