Oh OH! Do a review of the negative impact of Half Life! I am so sick of that game being praised as the Nirvana gold standard of gaming and story telling.
Or please PLEASE take FF7 fans down a peg! What an awful, messy and melodramatic game!
Why would he bash good games for no reason?
I personally don't like those games, but Yatzhee said this new segment of his show is to talk about important video games(no good or bad, just important) and their effects on the gaming industry as a whole. And as a hater of obnoxious JRPGs and mindful that he has played a few recent FF games, it would be useful to look back on FF7 and know where the obnoxiousness began.
As far as Half Life, Half Life caused Counter Strike and Counter Strike is a granddad of spunk-gargle-weewee games, so its worth looking at.

exactly, it's a joke with no punchline and the setup has been going on long enough that it's time to realise we should just stop trying to tell it.

Silentpony, if your only reason to see this review is because you hate those games, you really need to get out more. At least my question for him to review FE13 was a dare to see if he could play a Japanese non-widget game all the way through, fueled only by his enjoyment of X-COM.

Muted.

This was probably the best episode since Fuse. Im glad your taking the time to discuss gaming history since its infinitely more interesting than anything happening right now in gaming. But I still don't get how Nintendo is responsible for the boom in the anime market. What does Nintendo have to do with anime besides nationality?

I have always agreed that no game is worse than E.T. mainly with the points made in this video. Is that the most factual and well researched reason for the games crash? Who cares, its just video games...

Half Life has nothing to do with those kind of games, and FF7 is and remains to be an extremely high quality JRPG. Yahtzee knows he doesn't like JRPGs and has actually shied away from many of them because he knows that criticizing a good game just because you don't like the genre makes you sound like a douchebag and isn't very useful to anyone.

By the way, drought ends next week - Tales of Xillia 2 will be out.

So this new feature is basically just the Jimquisition but less good. All it does is highlight just how irrelevant, pandering and obvious Yahtzee's become compared to Jim, as well as being simply not as funny.

Why is Yahtzee the only reviewer who seems to have a problem with this so-called 'drought'. Other reviewers are finding games to review, so can he. The Wolf Among Us is the obvious choice, not to mention Divinity. I know he said it was boring during his Extra Punctuation, that shouldn't matter. If it's boring, that's the angle for the review.

Yes. Whoever unironically utters the phrase "worst game ever" and isn't talking about ET for the 2600 obviously isn't familiar with gaming history. Although to be fair, ET was probably just the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.

EDIT: Also I loved ET getting shot down by Space Invaders. That was awesome.

I liked this one. It's been a while since I laughed out loud in one of your vids but this one worked for me.

Yes, but it was also incredibly monopolistic. It was pretty much designed that competition was nigh impossible to arise, as it prevented multi-platform games and prevented the devs from making games for another console some games for multiple years after signing the licencing contract.
Well if they didn't want that to happen then they shouldn't have crashed their damned industry. SOMEBODY had to police the nitwits as 3rd parties proved that if left to their own devices they were incapable of acting like professionals. Ya don't want a probation officer then don't get drunk and piss on a police cruiser.

I wouldn't even really say it's the consoles that are really the problem so much as the 3rd parties who kept kicking and screaming until they got them. They kept saying "oh, we NEED new hardware so we can deliver bigger and better experiences so we can REALLY revolutionize the industry." And so far they haven't.

Every time they've been trying to sell their next title as the "ONE." Y'know, the game that'll convince everyone to get on board with the next gen. But it's not happening. Titanfall didn't do it. Dead Rising 3, nope. Ryse, uh-uh. Killzone: Shadowfall, pffft. Infamous: Second Son, LORD NO. Then it was Watch Dogs turn and that failed too. So far every attempt to sell the new gen has fallen flat and we wonder if the new consoles were released not because of devs truly needing new power to give us exciting new ideas, but because they realized they could no longer distract the public with spectacle and thus the thought of them having to use actual SKILL was a terrifying prospect. So, the hardware is fine, it's just that the people who tried to push it have shown that they're not using it correctly.

I actually kind of respect the guys who made E.T. They bashed out that game in basically a couple of weeks, whereas most games took a couple of months. For the record, that'd be like a big-name developer cranking out an entirely new game in about six months compared to the 2-3 year dev cycles of your average big-name triple-A releases.

I remember having fun with Atari2600 games back in the day... but standards were a bit lower then. Good thing gamers developed more taste with time and saw that not all was good and shiny.
They developed more taste because most third party games were exact duplicates of previously successful games. Have you noticed how nowadays most FPS seem to want to be like Call of Duty? Well you can say that it was like that, but 100 times worst.
