I bought this game on the day it came out and cashed it in for $40 48 hours later. I played the game in it's entirely and was outright disgusted with everything except for the 3rd person controls. I still own a copy of every other Metroid game including Hunters and Pinball except this one, that's how bad this game is.

Fantastic! I really start to wonder about Nintendo and how many more ways they can muck up their franchises. I wonder about that almost as much as I wonder about the fan-boys who are going to take real exception to this review. Reading all the posts later on today is gonna be a hoot. =D

Unbelievable... people are actually not taking Yahtzee's reviews at face-value and letting it dictate whether or not they buy a game? Don't any of you remember the SSBB Mailbag Showdown? o__O'

On a more relevant note, this was fucking hilarious. I almost hit the floor when the monologue came up. XD

LOL spot on as always, Yahtzee.

I do find it hard to believe for someone such as Samus' standards to completely breakdown at the sight of Ridley(AGAIN! for like the 4th fudging time). Jesus Team Ninja sure knows how to screw over Female character roles.....no pun intended

Since when has any Metroid game since Super Nintendo not needed good FPS mechanics? The main character's defining traits include a GUN ON HER ARM. If Team Ninja was trying to make a non-FPS game, they picked the wrong franchise. This isn't Zelda.

Arguing that a protagonist is some quality because the player controlling them does stupid things is ridiculous. So if I play Arkham Asylum and make Batman die over and over by missing punches, does that mean Batman is an incompetent klutz? NO.

It doesn't matter if Samus is a silent protagonist, there are tons of pieces of information from the earlier Metroid games that establish who she is, including most glaringly the audio/scan logs from Prime et. al. Samus is a bounty hunter but she hunts Space Pirates, Ridley, and the rest out of a determination to seek the unknown and keep others safe (remember how every mission ever begins with her responding to a distress call without promise of reward?). She is, in every game, either the first explorer or the one-woman rescue team. If there's any part of this description that doesn't scream bold and independent then I challenge you to find it.

Yahtzee has made plenty of biased questionable reviews. This is not even close. The fact that he shares criticisms with many other sources should tell you that the game is, in fact, shit, and the plot makes me personally cringe.
It's been pointed out that the angle I took in presenting my argument was fundamentally flawed. I'll definitely admit that. My argument was nowhere near as well-phrased or presented as others. Thanks for pointing it out respectfully.

On the other hand, while I will concede that the presentation of Samus as "bold and independent" holds up from the points you've put forward, I don't consider bold and independent to be completely opposed to also being emotionally scarred and occasionally uncertain or insecure. In fact, it could be argued that bold independence is a smoke screen to hide one's insecurities.

Again, I'll admit that since I haven't played the games or called up the cutscenes on YouTube, I cannot comment on the plot or gameplay. I'm just fascinated by this idea of Samus being depicted in the way she is has become almost universally reviled. Now, the way she's given depth may suck ass. As I've said, I can't comment on that. But the fact an attempt is being made to give her depth at all is, to me, noteworthy.

I just cringe to think what would happen if it were revealed in a Halo game that Master Chief likes to spend time out of his Spartan armor knitting between firefights.

When was Samus established as having a "bold, independent spirit"? I don't remember that being mentioned at all in any of the games
how about the fact that she is a Bounty Hunter instead of a Soldier, that clearly say to me that she prefer to work on her own terms

Oh, yeah! I see what you did there. Or rather... what I did there? Or what you did to what I did there, or what I did to what you?

@Razhem:

-shakes head- Wat veterans DO black out, it's called PTSD. You can't get over it, you merely learn to COPE, you find ways to live your life despite that damage. Samus has not been "pussified" as you like to claim, she's just been brought down to a more human level. She still kicks LOADS of ass across all creation.

As for the time this game is taking place, that also doesn't matter. It's not like people STOP having insecurities when they're 30 or older and it's not like characters stop having doubts and fears beyond their origin either. She's been through a lot and seeing Adam again has brought up some memories in her.

civ v isn't released until friday, how'd you get it working?
In the US it was released on Tuesday at 10 AM EST. I've only gotten to play a few hours thanks to a crappy internet connection and work, but it's awesome!

I agree with that Video you linked, for the most part, but my opinion on the story?

It wasn't sexist, character destroying or anything.

It just sucked.
Wow... I've made pages and pages worth of posts, and here you go and summarize my own thoughts so succinctly and effortlessly.

Well, I can't really agree on any points, not having played the game, or even watched any cutscenes, but I do hope that Yahtzee was exaggerating about Samus's new character traits. I mean, it is nice, I suppose, that she *has* character traits now, but I'm unsure that generic dependent female was the best way to go about it...
Still, I'll reserve judgement on that until I've played the game, or at least watched a let's play.

The whole traitor thing... I thought it was pretty obvious who the "traitor" actually was from approaching the idea from the perspective of who the traitor could be, then eliminate anyone that couldn't be the traitor by paying attention to the course the game took. I only came up with one possibility. MB. Thinking about it for a second, MB had the motives and the ability to kill the Marines. MB wanted to invade the Federation but Madeline sabotaged the facility and sent out the distress call that Adam, the Marines and Samus received. Due to "interference" the coms of the Marines wouldn't work, something that MB would be able to foresee and protect against as she was on a Science Vessel of the Federation. But Samus Aran's Power Suit... she could not foresee her arrival and so could not prep against the bounty hunter's technology which is why for the most part, the Marines have issues where Samus has a relative cake walk when Adam authorizes the use of her systems.

MB played the "I'm Madeline Bergman" card when Samus corners her to cause Samus to trust her. She then goes on to "spill the beans" and gives a very believable lie by interspersing truth and "revealing everything." Since MB recognized and knew that Samus was responsible for killing the Metroids and Mother Brain, MB knew that Samus would attempt to kill resurrected Metroids and destroy the reincarnation of the rogue AI Mother Brain in order to keep the universe safe. MB then attempted to set Samus on the path of killing the genetically engineered Metroids (in Sector 0) that couldn't be frozen, an act that almost certainly would lead to Samus' death because she wouldn't attempt to avoid the Metroids, but kill them. Even if Samus figured out something to do in Sector 0 to survive, she would be out of commission for a while at the least and would be removed as the biggest threat on the Bottle Ship to MB's plans.

I can understand some people saying, "But what about that big machine that was driven by a Marine that tried to kill MB? That's a hole in your logic." To this, my response is that everyone assumes it is a Marine because of the power suit. But these power suits are full suits, covering someone from head to toe. In the Metroid world of the future, you also can be safe assuming that these suits are full of computers and electronics. In order to be worth wearing, they have to give benefits and throughout the game, it is shown that these suits allow the Marines to stay agile while still protecting them. This would suggest that the suits themselves have servos and other methods of propulsion to assist in movements so that they can be heavily armored enough to protect without restricting the movement of the Marines inside. Because of the electronics and internal systems, MB, using the fact that she is an android and telepath, could have controlled an empty power suit with a crude AI and caused it to attack her and Samus to discredit the idea that MB is killing off Marines in Samus's mind. In addition to this, the machine stays to fight with Samus, allowing MB to flee. The machine only comes out when Samus corners MB and after the fight, the "Marine" is no where to be found. There are also other portions of the game where Marines are alive then later dead where MB is.
