As for me, I liked the game and played it more than twice a time. But what I don't understand, why do you make commercial for a game, which you don't like nowadays? That boggles my mind.

Does this not nullifices your comment!?

Nintendo- making the same game over & over & over since 1985. The broken record of the gaming industry.
Nintendo is a far lesser offender than most American companies, who simply release the same damn first person shooter with minor variations over and over and over.

As for this review, it's so right. Except that the spoiler bit regarding Metroids is limited to...
**SPOILERS**

only one Metroid. Well, technically seven.

**ENDSPOILERS**

And that the gameplay isn't that bad thanks to the sheer coolness of many of the attacks you can do, particularly in boss fights. And that the murder mystery element is still cool, despite being kind of an aborted arc.
Wrong, there are more than 1(!) Metroid in the whole game. Open your eyes and you will see them.

**Edit** Sorry for the double post, but can't find a delete button.

Can you please do a retrospect on prime so people don't think it's all like this. They're not gonna play them otherwise.

I really liked the game, actually. Though, like Mario Galaxies 1+2, Zelda Phantom Hourglass, and NSMBWii, I also really loved this review. Yahtzee made some excellent points about the game, many of which I agree with, looking back on my experience. Also, I see what he did there with the Metroid Fusion line (now the 2nd-most linear Metroid game in history).

i don't know if it's been posted yet, & i'm not planning to read through every single comment. & this may be too late for whatever reason on account of no-one caring anymore, but frankly i don't care. if anyone is wondering exactly why samus freaks out when ridley appears once again despite having killed him several times in the past, read this article. http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/81909/ptsd-or-weakness-real-experts-on-why-samus-didnt-shoot/

The problem with that the Heroic BSOD moment is only one aspect of the overall butchering of Samus so all the excuses of PTSD are pretty much just that: excuses. A more accurate portrayal of what Sakamoto was aiming for would be here:

http://moonbase.rydia.net/mental/blog/gaming/metroid-other-m-the-elephant/article.html

The only reason that Samus' characterization is defended at all is because gaming is still a boy's club. If Ninja Gaiden's Ryu Hayabusa had the same type of breakdown much less the same meek and submissive makeover for his personality that Samus had, there wouldn't be a single person defending it. But Samus is a girl (and I stress GIRL as opposed to woman) in Metroid: Other M so many still seek to defend it.

I generaly do dislike this game, mainly because what it is/did and erpersents. It has terible inconsitencies with the story, Samus being reduced to a pitiful worshiper of this generic guy....I could go on, I have over 20 things but this game just depresses me.

well ok, the article as well as what you said did change my mind, excepting that the PTSD thing was actually originally established in the official metroid manga, which came out alongside zero mission in japan, 2004. of course, here's where our strongest defense collapses since nintendo never translated it. that task was left up to the fans & as such, few have actually heard of it & those that do mostly didn't bother trying to find it, either because they couldn't be arsed or because they hate manga for whatever reason. the entire thing could be saved if they had simply translated it, or at least given some hint towards it, but they didn't because sakamoto is a moron. & after reading that article, i actually agree with that now more than ever. or at least, he's a moron when it comes to giving metroid a backstory. but i myself will still enjoy the game nonetheless, no matter what any reviews or opinionated douchebags on the internet will say :)

... wait, does this whole thing make me an opinionated douchebag too, in the process? ah screw it. :p

I like to give a shout out to Abbie Heppe who reviewed this atrocious excuse of a game in August. Thank you for telling the truth about the game and story ma'am instead of writing it off like IGN did. And for those folks who gave her all that shit about her review and calling her a feminist like it is the new 'f' word: Shut you pie hole she was right! And Yahtzee thank you for the laughs may fortune smile upon both you and Abbie Heppe.

Thankfully I didn't pick up Other M, not like I could anyway. I think it's Wii only. I had heard the story writers made Samus out to be weak and dependent. Kinda far from the image that most people had of her, IMO.

My opinion of this game has kind of evolved to something between admiration and disappointment and acceptance.

On the one hand, I can acknowledge more readily now just how bad this particular plot is for the implication it has on the characters. It's like one of those Dork Ages in comics.

But on the other hand, the way Samus moves, the way she uses her face, the kind of persona she evokes from moment to moment, are all things I didn't expect and have come to like considerably. She doesn't have that stone cold killer expression I had been expecting, nor does she any longer have that sort of stereotypical supermodel vixen demeanor and expression that she did in Smash Brothers Brawl. Rather, she has this sort of blank but alert look, like a person who has been socially stunted growing up and doesn't really know how to express herself like a normal human, but is still a caring person at heart -- more closeted (if not exactly shy) than anti-social.

She's more approachable and nuanced now, I think, than she ever was. That is certainly worth something. I just hope that future games can help us forget the troubling implications this particular plot cast on her character.

And given the vocal backlash against this game (keep it up, guys!) and Nintendo's tendency to listen to and learn from its fans (see Twilight Princess), I have good reason to believe that the sequel indeed will! :)

Just rewatched this ZP. It's probably my favorite of all time - not only is it hilariously accurate, it's absolutely right. Can Nintendo please give Metroid back to Retro Studios? I mean, they made amazing Metroid games, and supposedly their new DK Country game was incredible, which means they have 2D-ish platformer credentials. Why not let them make a true, 2D Metroid game?

Just, wow! in just one game nintendo fucked up samus's image. (To anyone who is not from japan i think) Hopefully nintendo has learned their lession and will make a better metroid game than this. (I hope)

Which clever-clogs thought it would be a good idea to take one of the most iconic female characters of gaming and give the production of a new game to "the jiggle-physics guys"?

Nintendo wrote the story and script. Put the blame where it belongs.

And the blame here is not about sexism, if that's what you're implying. Maybe her character was not portrayed in the best way, but the idea that it's a sexist portrayal is only fair if you think that Metal Gear Solid 3 is sexist against men. (Because seriously, Snake is treated worse in that than Samus ever is in Other M. But apparently, men don't count.)

In particular, I find it hard to believe that a work can be considered sexist against women when all the women portrayed -- every single one -- are better at what they do than all the men around them, in fields classically dominated by men. It also paints the vast majority of men as either threatening (what with every one of the men around Samus being suspect at some point of being the Deleter), or outright evil (in the case of the scientists on the station, and the sinister colonel guy who shows up briefly at the very end).

Yeah, the women portrayed are flawed. But most of the men have like two lines and then die. They are practically invisible, and we are expected to feel nothing for them when they die. The story is driven by the bad, emotionally-driven decisions of two women, sure. (That's right, two. Not the entire female sex.) But how is that any different from Greek tragedies driven by the flaws of over-emotional men? Women are the focus of the story. They are the ones with the depth. All the men but one are basically disposable.

And yet everyone says the game is sexist against women. Feh.
