It wasn't too long. Everybody saying two hours, or five hours, is exaggerating. It takes one hour to get to your first big monster hunt, less if you ignore the frequently *non mandatory* fetch quest type missions.
One hour is still way too long.

The average human has an attention span of 20 minutes. If you can't impress them with SOMETHING by that time then there is something fundamentally wrong with your game.
Please read my post after the edit. It's an hour to get to the boss fight. It's 15 minutes, at best, to get to actually killing monsters.

Also, 89.7% of statistics are made up on the spot, and 99% of people who cite design flaws with games have no clue how game design works, 100% of posts using the old statistics are made up joke are boring, and 30 pi% of posts meta referencing their own jokes get tedious after the first meta reference.

As for the attention span thing: Nobody I know has an attention span that short. If people did, how could they get through eight hours of work, or eight hours of school, or more than twenty minutes of typing up essays? Even further, the amount of time in most action movies when they add the big action scene is an hour in, and that's purely to keep the ADHD teenage male audience from being bored. If movies figure you can take an HOUR of sitting through dialogue before the stereotypical dumb, ADHD male teenager gets bored and wants to hear big explosions, then who the hell can only wait 20 minutes?
don't generalize like that,
I have ADHD and one of the parts of it is that you are unable to focus on something for too long, but at the same time can be really engrossed into something (eg. I played for over 6 hours before I realised I hadn't eaten, but I can't focus on other things) what you are describing is ADD which is the same but without the insense focus on one subject

Look, I am sure the rest of the game is all fine and dandy.

But not seeing the design flaw of taking an hour or more to introduce a game is unforgivable. Yes, it's a complex game. But you could at least throw in an interesting quest or two.

Yahtzee wasn't impressed, got bored and played something else before it got to the good bits. Which essentially wastes 99% of the game.
How is a tutorial level a design flaw? A tutorial level that isn't mandatory?

Not everyone is a gerbil on Red Bull. I'd rather go through a 1 hour tutorial level and actually know what the fuck I'm supposed to do!
Hammering on that it is a tutorial is missing the point. I've seen good tutorials before that get the point across while still being genuinely interesting.
And this one isn't? You get to kill monsters, you get to see who the game sets up as the big bad on one of the two mandatory quests that isn't interesting, you visit all the areas, and, again, you're killing stuff. It's pretty interesting even before you hit your first boss monster.

By the way, Portal has you wait over twenty minutes before you get to the first part you can make two portals on your own, so it must be shit too, right?

I don't know if his review for this game is good or not, I haven't played the game so I can't comment, and I do know Yahtzee is a bit notorious for not playing games all the way through before making his videos. All I know is, Yahtzee helps me a tonne with games way more than these more professional reviewers out there who I hardly ever agree with, and if he disliked a game and I played it, chances are I didn't like it either. There are some exceptions (he loved Saints Row 2, and I thought GTA4 was better. He likes Silent Hill 2, I don't. Etc) but this all counts for something right??? If I can get more use from an opinion of a dude who makes reviews that are set out mostly for the sake of humor (though I believe, still representing his true opinions of the game too) there is definitely something wrong with the other reviews out there.

And Daystar, please, "sucking arse"? Sucking arse because I like/agree with someone who you don't? Yahtzee has said a number of things I don't agree with. But more things I do agree with than things I don't.

Have to say I strongly disagree with the review you must not have played very much cause just after you fight the first boss it turns into boss fights the video game, that whole BS about killing nothing but little animals is a lie. I also have to say that the gathering random stuff from bushes also quickly disappears because you either no longer need as many items or your farm makes what ever you need. I suggest you get through the tutorial before you make a review for a game next time.

You misunderstood, probably because I didn't make it clearer. I meant the sound of fanboys sucking arse, i.e. the low post count users with no opinion other than Yahtzee's

It's too long and too boring. That's a pretty glaring design flaw if it turns off people from seeing the rest of the game.

Like I said before, there are ways to at least make the tutorial interesting. Or maybe you can introduce some of the more complex stuff later on as you get onto the advanced levels. I don't know. Point is, if your game takes too long to become good then people will outright stop playing it.
It's ten minutes of something that is *possibly* uninteresting, and 50 minutes of stuff that's fighting creatures/seeing your first giant monster, and then you get to killing giant monsters. That's pretty good as far as tutorials go; even Call of Duty and Halo, games notorious for being nothing but dumb action, have similar levels of "learn how to play" before you actually shoot something.

If you haven't played the game, please don't argue about how the tutorial works. I've explained it to you: Two mandatory quests that are boring in concept, one of which is the tutorial mission, one of which is where you encounter your first big monster, and the rest is either not required, or hunting. That's not bad, at all.

Unhappy Face =(

I think the game is quite alright, maybe because although i'm a gamer, I have a more forgiving heart.

For example, last year, I could play maplestory 10 hours straight and still have some fun with it.

Don't beat me I've stopped playing it, I know... Yay Enlightenment!

Wow, Yahtzee completely missed the point of the game. Me thinks he didn't play long enough to fight some of the bigger monsters.
This is exactly the stuff he's addressed in a previous video. His response.

"So these people seem to think I've misinterpreted my own opinion!"

Bugger off.

I liked the video, was hoping for Alan Wake or RDR though.

*sigh*

Remember when Zero Punctuation was good? I miss that.

As for the review, yes it can get quite grind-a-rific but I feel it is misrepresented here. It does not take nearly as long as Yahtzee says to kill monsters. This would be okay if the review were funny, as that is why any sensible person would watch Zero Punctuation. Given by the first two lives of my post, you can clearly deduce that I did not find it to be so. When you strip away the humor, you get a crap-tastic review, unfortunately. It's likely he hasn't played the game for longer than an hour by the sound of his near-baseless complaints, and he didn't cover the online... you know, the thing you buy Monster Hunter for?

Also, for anyone trying to justify Yahtzee's laziness in regards to multiplayer (especially those who do this and still try to pass him off as a legitimate critic); shut the hell up. If he intends to give us a game review, he should do the whole job. By failing to do so, he has failed as a critic and the people who actually trust his reviews (as foolish a notion that should have revealed itself to be by now). He cannot reliably represent the game with as little time as he has spent on it, making his review moot. However, this doesn't stop him from being funny (his tired writing does that by itself. I think the guy needs a break).

For those uncertain of the game, I say rent it. Play it until you hit 2* quests. If you aren't hooked by then, this isn't the game for you.

A bit notorious? In the same way the United States had a few relationship troubles with the Soviet Union during the 60s, sure. He's e-famous for being wrong almost as much as he is famous for being funny. I think he's entertaining, but even if he says something that seems right, it's frequently taken out of context or overblown, sometimes for humor, sometimes for nothing but needing a big gripe to make (for instance, he complained about the controls in one game despite being customizable, complained about having certain selection options be nonexistant in Halo Wars despite the fact they were, complained about the sensitivity of Turok when it didn't have nearly as much of an issue, etc.).

That whole list up there is my point. If you find his opinions agree with yours, that is perfectly fine. But you seem to actually *play* the games before forming opinions. My problem is with, as I've been trying to state the entire time, two groups: The group that thinks you can't criticize Yahtzee at all because he's not serious, even when he's taken seriously so he should at least try to present an honest viewpoint, and the people who make posts just to say "this game looks like it sucks, Yahtzee said so."

Ah, apologies then :)

Incidentally, which part of Nottingham are you from?? I recently moved from Nottinghamshire to Australia. Little market town there called Retford.

It's more that he shows no evidence of actually reaching the giant monster fights that he apparently wanted to get to, not the idea that he's misinterpreted his opinion of the stuff he did get to.

If you want a game about killing really big lads, I'd recommend Shadow of the Colossus. From what I've read in other reviews apparently there's no real story in Monster Hunter Tri, you spend the first half of it fighting relatively smallish things, and when you finally do get to fight the big lads you'll have to do it a half-dozen times to get the good gear from them.

that isn't misinterpreting his opinion, he has statistically played less than 1% of the game (and the point of the game and his opinion are two completely different things)

personally I would like yahtzee to actually say what quest he got up to before he got bored
