This week, Zero Punctuation dispels some notions on why Pokemon hasn't been reviewed before.

Yahtzee secretly likes Dynasty warriors (Just kidding).

I honestly thank God by some miracle of man yaht'z dodged dynasty, romance, and all incarnation of the three kingdoms.

But back on topic ^^, who in the blue hell really plays pokamon (That goes here)? I mean a game review for it's fans are suppose to be for something they might honest to God pick up. Jesus man what's next are there any barbie games you care to cover next?

I really hope this "I'm going to review games for the under age crowd, because their as easy to play as they are to pick" on goes out of style and soon.
The site is full of Pokemon fans. What makes Pokemon so bad?

Not to mention the Staff like John Funk, Gabe from Penny Arcade, Scott from VG Catz etc. etc.

Jesus tapdancing christ who took a diarrhea dump in your cheerios? That first line was a jest aimed at the series. Did I say they have stagnated? No, so don't go and start assuming crap about me that you don't know.

All I said was after 151, there was just way too many for me to really be vested in the games. Especially when they start involving having to drive 2+hrs to a gamestop just to pick up a celebi for your last generation pokemon game, just so you can use it to unlock Zoa... the fox-ditto pokemon, in White and Black. Or Victini. All the pokemon should be available within the game, not cut out to be handed out at a few events here and there.

And I say this for the same reason I say Dragon Quest 9 was a horrible game once you beat it. All those post-game features were designed with having a large number of people who owned it and a DS, kept the DS with them, and left the game in sleep mode as they traveled via public transportation. I.E, Japan. In America however, you aren't going to see a special treasure map released from PAX East anytime within a year get even close to halfway across the US.

Relying on people to spread a thing through their DS in America, is like trying to sell generic-fps shooter on the 360 in Japan, you'll nab a few people here and there, but it isn't going to spread much further than that.

So just chill brolax.
Brolax status? Holy shit man.
I got Zorua really easy by just asking for one of the GTS. Took less than a day to obtain one after I had asked for it. All the Pokemon were never available in just one game. Trading is highly encouraged and has been part of the game since day one. Event Pokemon have been here since the beginning too, as Mew was released later on.

But honestly, if you haven't played the series in such a long time, then what do you know?

Hale and landwalker have good comics (for entirely different reasons) I'm personally doing two Nuzlokces right now. Flora Sky, a rom hack of Emerald (5 Dead, Timburr, Rattata, Pidegy, Bidoof, Sewaddle. Nicknames Ares, Mercury, Skywarp, Shirly and Tailor respectivly) and one of Diamond (No dead yet, but I only have a Monferno and Shinx and just reached Jubilife)

Trust me that keeping your team alive in Flora Sky requires a bit of effort considering Maxie was packing HEATRAN and Iris (now the 6th Gym Leader and packing Flying Types instead of Dragons) is packing Tornadus. I mean I didn't lose any pokemon to them but seriously what the christ game?

Yeah the flying/electric type took me by suprise the first time I challenged that gym too. Whats worse is that she has 3/4 of them each with a TM move called Volt switch which damages you and swaps with a different member in her team, and here I thought that the Elite four were cheap.
I was actually pleased for a genuine challenge this game. The volt switch strat actually brought a smile because prior to this game, everything ran off an AI roulette. It was refreshing to see the computers actually try to plan things..... then again, if they did, and set things up this way, it might make the game too hard for the younger bracket.

What did catch me by surprise is those squirrels knowing aerial ace (Or whatever flying move they knew). Managed to take out my grass type.

Yeah, the climbing the tower thing pissed me off too.

For all its flaws, Pokemon's really satisfying, watching your cute little animals grow up to be world-crushers. Though the Elite 4 is really friggin' overpowered this time around.
Really? This is one of the first times where I beat the Elite Four on my first(second try, but that time I ended up facing N and Team Plasma's Castle, so I don't count it)

Pokemon is now the middle school version of COD and Halo?

It's secretly the deepest competitive strategy game ever.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah... wait you aren't kidding.

Yu-Gi-Oh! has tier lists too. That doesn't really indicate anything.

Yu-Gi-Oh! is still way better than pokemon actually. I don't know why it gets so much hate while pokemon doesn't.
Also, at least Yu-Gi-Oh! DOESN'T HAVE FUCKING LAND CARDS so I don't really see why MTG gets so much more respect than it either.
Nope. Instead, it has field cards, which are a lot like land cards.
In what way? They have nothing to do with summoning.

Congratulations on finding out that every single Pokemon game is identical.

Just one question. Why would anyone use a full team and actually pay attention to the battle strategy?
You get your starter, and you NEVER change pokemon. Kill every single trainer with just that one pokemon, and you won't have trouble in gyms since you will be twice the level of your opponent. (The first gym is an exception, but this game makes it easy by giving you one of the element monkeys, of your opposite element, right next to the first gym.)
They kinda changed it in this one. The EXP you receive is now based on your own level comparative with your opponent's. You could fight something level 50 and get 6000 exp with a level 40, or get 1200 with a level 60. Of course, it doesn't help that they give you an experience boosting item that was pretty much the rarest item in the game in the previous gens like halfway through the game...

Was kinda waiting for him to address the "why don't the bad guys just use 40 pokemon each" thing since they're breaking the law everywhere else, but good overall. It really hasn't changed, though thanks for the heads up on the electric gym.
The bigger question is why they use Pokemon at all when bullets would seem far easier and less hassle.
The fan base has a theory on that. Guns don?t exist, think about it, once people figured out how to tame creatures that could cause earthquakes or shoot lighting why would anyone need guns?
Be... Because it would be far easier and less of a hassle. Seriously? He... Well... I mean, he just said that dude. : /
So? You're saying, it'd be easier to build a non-existant weapon, from out of the blue, rather then just say: "use the hyper cannon"

I think everyone is either "UGH! Nintendo games SUCK!" or "Those games are meant for children! You must be a kid to like those games!" or they are just retarded.
One argument that seems to stick, is that the games never change. Well... Most shooters don't change, and still sell millions.
If its not broken, why fix it?
Besides that, Pokemon DOES change; many new pokemon are added, with type matchups that were never seen before. The story is changed a little bit each time, and game mechanics change a little bit. But its still the same "gotta catch 'em all" principle at its core.
Don't like it? Thats fine. Go back to playing Minecraft.

Get Black if you like rotation battles, Fire/Dragon end-game legendary, and a city where you battle trainers for $$$. Also for the 3-4 pokemon you can't get in White.
Get White if you like triple battles, Electric/Dragon end-game legendary, and a forest where you can catch pokemon you can't find anywhere else and fight trainers every day. Also for the 3-4 pokemon you can't get in Black.

They are very simliar, but not enough to be "ZOMG I NEED BOTH GAMES!!!!!"

Since I'm too lazy to read all comments, here's my thoughts that may already be said.

Yhatzee has a point in that pokemon is shallow in gameplay, with the only exeption being in multi-play (which half of us being introverts, we'd be unlikely to use.)

From hindsight of my Pokemon play, I can say the appeal is not as a game; but as a sort of pet collection sim. or in shorter, It's all about the pokemon themselves.

In white I collected my 6 favorite pokemon of past and pressent and stopped. I had realised my personality in the world of the game through what I chose (Zekrom, Victini, Umbreon, Zoroark, Lucario) and then there was nothing left to do.

I keep finding I'm buying pokemon for the pokemon only, and I keep coming back to the same conclusions: Pokemon needs to go beyond stratagy, to "evolve" into a new form of gameplay. My hope is a "Hack and Slash" RPG that removes the trainer entirely for a more personal imersion into the pokemon you love (although I'd like to keep the catch 'em all part and use any of the pokemon I choose). However, it's most likely that if they were to do that it would most likely have to be established as an MMO; possibly due to chip space. The problem with that being that there are no "Hack and Slash" MMORPGs; something to do with the PC element maybe.

Of course, it's not likely they'd change the formula at all. Unless of course a competitor does it themselves in a thinly veiled impersonation of pokemon as a H&S RPG... however despite my best search for such a game, I've found none. So it's going on my "list of nonexistant games I'd buy"... which I'll have to make a video of sometime.

...Man that was long.

:/ This review kind of annoyed me and I honestly don't know why. I honestly don't care when games I like get ripped in to (I say, while looking up gold earning tips for Fable 2) but I honestly think that Yahtzee was just looking for excuses to dislike the game. Especially the part about the electric gym -- was he /seriously/ complaining about a *boss* battle not being super easy?

Also, what the fuck, one play style? There's about a million strategies you can use. You can hardly complain about strategy if all you're doing is /power levelling/. Also, we know you don't like turn-based combat. __This does not mean that there is something inherently wrong with the genre so please stop implying it.__

And seriously, how can you honestly say that the series hasn't budged an inch since POKEMON __FUCKING__ YELLOW? Are you shitting me?

Glad we both agree that N is a complete twat though. __Stop telling me you can talk to my Pokemon, you fucking freak__.

oh god this turned out being complete tl;dr sorry

Dear Yatzee,

I stopped watching your reviews because you sound like my mum when I was 12 and she stood over my shoulder telling me that collecting badly drawn animals was a dumb idea for a game.

In closing, you don't get it at all. And you never will. Get back to watching Keeping up appearances.

Lots of non-parental-resentment-projection love,
Jader.
