Interesting that Yahtzee didn't comment on the game being bundled with Denuvo on PC, arguably the absolute WORST of DRM.

Some Virus Scanners already recognize it as the malware that it is and automatically remove it, making the game not being able to run as the required DRM is removed.
Secondly, Denuvo calls home so often that it frequently interferes with the game, making it run a LOT worse.
Denuvo got cracked and Yahtzee usually plays multiplatorm games on consoles.
Just because some guy cracked it doesn't change the fact that Sega acted like a shitstain and put that on there.
And just focusing on the console versions doesn't change the fact that it exists and is a scourge.

Eh, saw this coming.

I actually enjoy the whole "find the hidden special stages thing", as it encourages replaying the game and exploring the levels.

Oh, and for exploring, pick tails. It'll let you scope the level out a heck of a lot, and then you can figure out how to get there with Sonic afterwards. ...Or you can beat the game, use the level select that it gives you on your save file when you do and just keep replaying green hill zone until you get them all.

Also...What, he timed out? I didn't time over once the whole time, and It can't be because I'm the kind of person who basically 100%ed Sonic 3 and knuckles as a teen. XD

Same here, only time I timed out was like once as tails and only cause I was exploring way too much on a stage i couldn't find anything on X3

Oh for fucks sake, Yahtzee, will you and Sonic just shag and get it over with? We can all see through your blue-tinted 'thy doth protest too much' smokescreen. :p

Freedom Planet wasn't that great, either.

The fact that this review came right after the crack was released made me chuckle. Perfect timing.

Yahtzee's spot on about the time limit with regards to Casino Night Zone.
Never had an issue with the time limit on that level, Carnival Night Zone act 2 in Sonic 3 on the other hand took ages(mostly cause of that damn barrel) and the boss is one that you only get to attack every so often, you can only kill him quick if you manage to hold onto a lightning shield or if you are very good at using the insta-shield attack.

I know, but DRM is something i've never really seen Yahtzee mention in his videos.

He's making some decent points. Sonic would be well suited in an open world game, or even a metroidvania. There is exactly one open world Sonic game and we're not talking about it. Sonic's mechanics lends itself really well to exploration, but the camera is always too focused on his nose that looking ahead any significant distance just doesn't happen.

That's my gripe with it anyway, it's less of an issue in the 3D ones, but those come with problems of their own.

Sounds like its not as good as Freedom Planet. A game which started as a sonic fan game and ended up much much better than it had any right to be, or the source material.
To be fair, hybridizing Sonic with Sparkster and Rocket Knight (with a few glances taken in Gunstar Heroes' direction) wouldn't exactly be faithful if they're going for an improved-retro-throwback style game. Though it would be appreciated otherwise.

Speaking of, when was FP2 coming out again?

I'd prefer Sonic games more like SatAM than ..adventure time?
Anything that stays away from Adventure Time is a positive in my book.

Eh I would have to disagree with ya there. While yes exploration is a key element of sonic so is getting to know a stage to make the fastest path through it and too those hidden special stages. Its why I am on my fifth playthrough and still having a ball

I just know that FP started as a sonic fan mod then something happened with sega and they went oc. I'm not sure how much of the gameplay changed between the start and the finished product.

All I know about Freedom Planet 2's release date is that its next year, hopefully early since I wants it.

Not that they wear shoes and gloves, are weirdly colored, physically mutated, etc?

Aw come on Yahtzee it's a Sonic Game. I mean I love this thing but I was expecting some way harsher stuff.
That because it's a good Sonic game and so there wasn't much to complain about.
The thing is he either should have gone all the way being nasty or given it some praise. Otherwise it just kind of came out as 'tepid' and not worth a Zero Punctuation.

I was going for Bioware's abortion that was Chronicles, but any one of them will be "that one game". Utopia is a fan game though, and it doesn't look terrible.

Those are things that explain Sonic games, not so much the Sonic character whose defining attributes are going fast and having attitude. An open world game would allow for both those things to come much more to light than what basically amounts to a puzzle platformer.

I don't have much love for Chronicles, but it isn't open world. You can't go anywhere from the start, you can only move from area to area as the story allows.

I didn't get far in it, but from what I've played you can usually turn around and go back to the start of the game.
