From his spot on the chair, Dan had watched the entire scene.
He knew exactly how Rob felt; the horror of seing human beings reduced to such monstrocities, the guilt of having to kill them to assure your own survival, and the constant fear of death all bearing down on you at the same time. It was enough to overwhelm nearly anyone.
Dan was surprised it wasn't him on the floor, curled in a ball and wishing he were anywhere but this horrible place. He supposed he was just numb from it all, the constant killing, the constant death, wondering if you were going to live to see the next day.
While he had wanted to support the poor man, he had had no idea of what to say to him. And so, simply sat there, and watched.
