"There are easy ways to defeat all of them, the military doesn't care though unless they shoot it with something or blow it up. It spewed acid, not smoke, and simply using a large amount of a highly basic material would have killed it. Humans can't stand a change in the pH balance of their bodies, and since zombies are us they can't either. I told general Kaufman as much, but being related to the Bixlers in any way means you always think you know what's best; even if it's completely false." Jack thought for a few moments.

"I have a theory on how these specials are created and how common they will be, but it's probably wrong and will be of no use to anyone. It isn't even really worth going into in detail, suffice to say, they will become much more common as time passes."

"'You think something along the line of mutations? That the infections grow more out of control as time passes?" Christie asked. She'd considered how the infected changed for a while now and had thought of that as a main theory in her mind.

"I think so, though it has just as much to do with the human infected as with the disease itself. Though the theory can't be proven without extensive testing which cannot be done anymore." Jack responded simply.

"Huh. Turns out that my theory wasn't too half-baked after all." Christie said with a slight smile. She was a few miles from the destination now. She moved a hand to the pocket she'd placed the vial in and checked that it was still fine, the small vial still held the liquid, ready to do it's duty.

"No it wasn't Christie." Jack continued.

"I almost wish I had a pencil and paper so I could write down my first hand experience of becoming a zombie, the information would be something like someone in the middle ages writing down how they feel with the black death or a man in 1918 describing what it is like to have the Spanish flu. It would be so informative on what kind of virus we are dealing with and what its closest relative is."

"Well. I'll see what I can find. You'll see where we're going soon. I thought it was fairly fitting considering that I'm getting my own recrimination for what happened there. Not to mention that it's safe from other infected and away from military." Christie replied, considering whether she'd have access to what he wanted.

"Much appreciated. I've always been a scientist first and a realist second. Even if the information means nothing, I am sure there are others as curious as I am to find out how it feels to become infected."

"Well said. I might even come back and distribute it to some worthy-source, that's if i can get together the stationary. Count that as a addition to your final requests, huh?" She replied before seeing the building come into sight.

"Nah, I'd count it as a bonus. If you can great, if not it won't be a problem. I believe last requests should only be one item long, especially if its something major. Wanting to be infected with a zombie virus counts as a pretty big thing in my book." Jack said.

"That's fine by me. Although getting the infection was easier than i imagined, that's probably why it doesn't feel like a big deal." Christie replied, the smirk still there.

"Yes I imagined either it was Alan and you either blatantly or subtly lied, or it was anyone else and they are now lying unconscious on the floor. Either way, it probably was fun for you and rather easy." Jack said his own smirk in place.

Christie laughed at that.
"It was indeed both, you never fail to read me. It was option one by the way. Toying with Alan is quite a lot of fun, he's far too high-strung for his own good."

The mornings were cold year-round. That was frustrating. Vigil lit a cigarette and massaged his numbed ears for a minute. That wasn't the best idea.
In most cases, the onomatopoeia associated with zombies was a moan. A 'why me' or 'I'm bloody starving' guttural sound only occasionally confused with 'oh yes, don't stop' if you watch the lesser-known B-movies. What rose to Vigil's ears however, was screams. Wails of hatred and damnation. The boy considered simply not looking down. After all, the bank was sufficiently closed off and four stories high. While he might have been relying heavily on the old Loony Toons 'don't look down and you'll walk right across that canyon' logic, it just didn't seem worth it.
Except it did. "Oh yeah." Today was day one of looking for other survivors. He backed up to the ledge and casually glanced down. His jaw dropped, his cigarette fell, and it landed square on a dead's head two stories below him. "Oh fuck."
They were climbing up each other like ants. There was little incline to the mass of squirming bodies, but they were making progress at a disturbing rate. The boy ran the perimeter of the building. "Wall of zombies, wall of zombies, fuck!" Four for four. And of course, the fourth wall had the fire escape. Only a matter of time. Maybe minutes.
Vigil hugged himself and tried to stop shaking. Deep breaths. Deep breaths. Deep...
Alright. The screams were louder once the pulse behind his ears settled, but the shakes were gone. He stretched his arms in a few directions and grabbed the pipe he'd only had to use one other time. Twice, if you count teeing a firecracker down a subway stairwell.
After considering his weapon and the relatively open space he occupied, his only frame of reference for what would come next was grounded in Kill Bill 1, The Matrix Reloaded, and a handful of kung-fu stereotypes. [So, Kill Bill again?] In fashion with the aforementioned, Vigil gathered his belongings to the center of the rectangular platform and perched on the sleeping bag cross-legged. He'd never meditated before, but it seemed like a good enough way to pass the last few minutes. There were no wires or other buildings nearby that he could get to. He was here, and so were they. If he was gonna die here -and he probably would, then it'll be drawn out to the bitter end. "Ohm... Ohm." [Damnit] He got up and checked over the side with the fire escape. It was a cluster-fuck to be sure. For a moment he thought that they might get clogged in the metal frame-work and slow down again, but given the other three walls, that would only post-pone the inevitable. But there were matters at hand. The boy unzipped and urinated down the side of the bank, smugly hitting as many as he could, which wasn't too difficult. He then returned to the sleeping bag and fumbled for the photographs in his bag. There were only about ten. He flipped through them, kissing each one and working his eye lids rapidly to keep from crying again. When he went through them all, he did so one more time before tucking them away into his sweatshirt pocket, zipping it up partially and pulling up the sleeves. He wasn't cold anymore, but layers on the neck and shoulder region were a must, and he'd watched loose articles like jacket flaps cause a lot of bad ends for people, back when there still were any. He took a comfortable grip on the pipe and walked the perimeter again. It was still just the one side that he had to worry about immediately, but the screaming ants were definitely making progress on all fronts. Taking a crouched position facing the northern ledge, Vigil stared at the brick horizon line and steadied his breath as best he could. The screams were thundering now. The sun was just over the mountains to his right. Orange haze filtered the scene. The smell of blood and decay rose just under the cries. [I guess it's been a good life. Got laid a few times, got fucked up a few times, shook Marilyn Manson's hand and ate Robert Plant's prime rib. Never did complete anything on paper though. Fuck. Oh well. No lamentations!]
A hand rose over the wall. "Punch it time." He ran forward ready to swing.

"I wouldn't have used the term high-strung. Probably stuck up bastardization of a human being is more like it. You aren't a hard girl to read, no offense. You just seem like someone who enjoys what they consider the simple things, whatever those may be. Figure those things out, and you become an open book." Jack joked

She laughed a little more,
"You surprise me, Jack. I didn't think you'd be so on the ball. What more can i say? I'm of simple taste. Few things keep me happy, but the point is that they keep me happy. Be it my cigarettes, my lust for violence, getting a drink when I need it, to name a few. Oh, I can add the look on Bixler's face when we I have to talk to him." Christie replied contently.
"So, what about you? Do you stick to the simple things?"

"My loves are simple, research, a stiff drink every now and again, and good food. I always grew up with a love of science, especially physics. I wanted to learn how the world worked and why, and physics gave me those answers in great detail. The mathematics of the universe and the theories behind them, but with the apocalypse it seems there will be some questions that I will never be able to learn the answer to. Most of them centering around this virus, and its purpose for existence, and how the Bixlers are immune while nobody else has any kind of immunity, but the main questions are the great philosophical ones. The why are we here, what is our purpose, and most importantly, what could humanity have become. I see, or at least saw, greatness in humanity once, but that seems to be a time long gone." Jack replied with a hint of saddness in his voice.

"It seems are we all now is play things for the Bixlers and those others more powerful than ourselves. Pawns in a sick game of chess that nobody can possibly win. Part of why I want to be a zombie of my own choice is to be able to have one actual choice of my own destiny in my life. Even if the very last is not my own, the last I remember will be."

Christie thought for a moment in silence.
"You always seem to have a outstanding point. It's unfair really. I can't argue against your arguments at any point. It's ironic of me to say that despite the fact I have no objections to taking prisoners, Freedom is one of the things I crave. It depresses me that it will be gone soon for anyone uninfected. Although you had little choice, the fact you want me to do this is somewhat humbling now that you've explained your reasoning."
She went kept one hand on the wheel and reached inside one of her inside pockets. She pulled the thermos she'd drank from earlier and shook it. There was quite a lot left.
"Jack Daniel's?"

"You enjoy it, one more thing that won't be around much longer. Why waste good drink on a soon to be dead man. My choice of you was as much logical as anything else, you disliked me enough to kill me, I knew you wouldn't get soft on me, and most importantly you are of your word. If you told me you would get me that virus, you would get me that virus or you wouldn't bother showing up. I'm just sick of being somebody's pawn, and this is the only way it seems it will quit at all. Consider it one last plan that carries a minimum of casualties, only one if everything turns out alright." He said as he pressed the thermos back toward her.

"I'll ensure that there should only be one casualty." Christie replied before putting the thermos back after holding it a few moments.
"I'm a lot of things and i'll do a lot of things most wouldn't, no doubt. But one thing I don't do is false deals. One of those life lessons that stick, y'know?"
She smirked again at a thought.
"The drink is still on offer. You might as well live it up with your final sip of whisky, as i see it. I don't think the infected get to go to bars much once they change."

"No but the survivors that feel their lives are over do, and I'm sure they drink heavily while they are there. Not to mention the plants are all shut down now, as are any winery or brewery. Obviously I don't know the lesson of sticking to deals, I shot you in the stomach when the situation changed. You were going to kill someone who I then thought of as humanity's savior, and he still is unfortunately. He is your best hope at surviving this, and he's just smart enough to see it and just stupid enough to think that means he is a god among men for it." Jack sighed and paused for a bit.

"The saying 'pride cometh before a fall' applies to him in spades. In fact you probably wouldn't even be hunting me had I not learned that the Bixlers are the cause and thus cure of the virus. Should they all die, all hope is lost and judging by the willingness of Bixlers to accept help, the death of Alan would have sealed our doom because he was the last Bixler researching the virus. They would never have told anyone else, so sorry for shooting you, but I honestly did not see any other way at the time to complete my former objective of making sure humanity survives. Now, I don't see anything left worthy enough to survive." Jack replied to Christie.
