After leaving thoroughly disappointed from the zombie home thread that turned out to be an advertisement from a spambot, I realized there was only one thing I could do and that was to make my own zombie home thread about actual zombie homes!

So what would be your ideal home to survive, resist and fight the zombie horde?

Would you go the extra mile to get to one of these babies? [http://www.cracked.com/article_17278_6-incredible-real-world-supervillain-lairs.html]

Or perhaps something simpler, like your own house with some helpful vegetation. [http://static-www.ec.popcap.com/www.popcap.com/sites/www.popcap.com/files/games/pvz/screenshots/pvz3.jpg]

Or maybe the classic, 'tread-mill' defense where you surround your house with tread-mills.

Hell, would you do the world's fastest renovation job to try and imitate this [http://i.imgur.com/pe7Q1.jpg] zombie-proof house?

I suppose the next most important question after establishing a defense would be what to do in your spare-time. Even Breaking Bad is going to be boring after the ninth viewing. So perhaps you'll start a hobby of some sort? Maybe try your hand at the five-finger-fillet? Or for the more ambitious, try and crack a world record. Gather up all your eggs, it's time to show the world your secret elbow talents.

However you survive, just remember to have fun. Otherwise, what's the point?

But those aren't really "zombie homes" now are they?

Much more comfortable for the zombie, methinks.

I suppose you could add in a nice backyard makeshift graveyard, cardboard tombstones and all.

My own house (apartment) is pretty zombie-proof. Our biggest problem would be supplies, since we generally don't have more then 4-5 days of food stocked (or 0 if we really need to go shopping, like today).

I live on the third floor, with three decent strength doors in between us and the public streets. So unless someone Fucks up and leaves all those doors open we'd be fine for about a week... then we'd need to start scavenging... and get killed/eaten...

A castle is a fortress that is also a residence for the nobility or aristocracy.

So, it's a zombie proof house. Of course, you need to be a noble or royal to have one. Not sure what happens if a noble sells a castle to a commoner, does it become a fortress then, or does the title of castle stick?

Yay!

My house is thoroughly un-zombie proof. We have glass doors, multiple access points, no real hiding places, etc etc.

On the other hand, we have lots of potential weapons, and I have a badass spider.

I already live out in the middle of nowhere on a farm, so I think I'd be okay anyway. Might have to deal with a stray zombie every now & again, but that's nothing my .44 Mag can't deal with. Oh & my house has walls that are a foot thick so I'd just have to reinforce the windows & doors & I've got a second floor perfect for sniping.

I would worry more about the basic tenants of real estate than the house itself. Location, location, location. I'd go for a solid little cabin in the Canadian Rockies equivalent of an Alpine Meadow. Not situated in a forest for better visibility but near one for firewood in winter. Land enough for a big-ass vegetable garden and some grass eating animals to get by with. A nice clean river or lake nearby for fish. I fucking hate fish but it's possible eating them will beat starvation. The only things I'd really want vis a vis the cabin itself would be a well/bore hole/aquifer dealie in the basement and a tunnel from said basement leading outside for an alternate exit.

Yeah I've got to agree with everyone else that location is a lot more important. I'd rather be living out of a crappy hut in the middle of nowhere than a £10m mansion in the middle of London. Purely because the zombie density would be manageable there.

That said, I'd quite like a farm cottage in some tiny village, that'd be the sweet life.

Depends on some specific circumstances.

If with a well armed large group, a modern steel reinforced version of a fortified city would be best, at least so long as the outer curtain wall was large enough to enclose a significant amount of farm land. You could live in peace that way, at least so long as you keep the piles of zombie corpses outside the walls from growing large enough for newcomers to walk up.

If on one's own, or with a small group, avoiding attention entirely would be best. if in a city, I'd probably seal off all entrance points on a particularly strong building, and use tunnels that emerge in various locations, ideally many of them would be placed where someone can observe the exit from the roof.

I'd go for something tall. A nice tower with 10 floors or so, each floor with multiple reenforced doors/access points and a multitude of corridors on the lower levels, each one could be blocked off in case something did enter; but I'd still be able to get round. A hell of a lot of surveillance/security equipment to detect any intruder(s). Roof access with emergency helicopter (standard) I'd build it somewhere fairly rural, but within a good distance of supplies. Plenty of farmland area around the building to keep myself self sufficient. Maybe a little research lab on the outskirts too, so I can experiment on said zombies and try to find a cure, or at least a weakness. A few cars would be great, each with specific use e.g Motorbike for city traveling, 4x4 for off-road, something that doesn't make much noise while I'm exploring a new town and something fast as hell for motorways (once I know they're clear) oh, what the heck! I'll have a bulldoser too for taking down a few hordes and clearing out important roads.

I think I'd be pretty safe in that baby until I die of old age. Anyone else want to come live with me? Well tough luck, the less people the better ha ha

The upstairs part of my house could withstand a zombie outbreak provided I smash the bottom stairs to bits and pieces so they can't climb up and even then I'll be in my attic Night of the living Dead style.

Captcha: for sure

I'M REALLY SURE.

I honestly don't think I would use a house during a zombie crisis. Every zombie movie I've ever seen usually has a scene where people have holed up in some fortified building and the zombies still find a way to overwhelm them or get them to run because they can siege the house pretty much forever.

Instead, I would say that the best way to weather the crisis would be to travel on foot or by vehicle and have a High-Hide sort of device so you can effectively sleep in the trees. Silly? Oh, extremely. But it's a zombie outbreak so things have already escalated beyond silly.

Well my house would be absolutely appalling in Zombie defence. The idiot who designed it decided that large front windows were an excellent idea, and the entire house seems to have far too many of them for it to be defended.

The house I lived in before on the other hand, would have worked rather nicely, due to it being pretty secure with a couple of rooms blocked off.

To be honest one of the best places would be a local convenience store, provided you have one with proper shutters. Most of them have lavatories, and lot's of food. So all you'd need to do is get yourself something to sleep on, find some weapons, and beat everybody else with the same idea around the head until they stop moving.

Although on a more serious note, I don't think I could do what they always do in fiction where they group together with a bunch of strangers. If I was near family and friends, naturally I'd stay with them, but otherwise I'd be on my own. Two of my better traits are that I am good at improvising and am resourceful, so I'd probably do better alone anyway.

That said, the UK is not a country with a lot of fire-arms, so defending yourself over here wouldn't be particularly easy. I live in a fairly rural area, so I am sure there are probably some farmers with weapons, but I don't know of any.

As for what I'd do? Something similar to what happened in the Walking Dead with the guy Rick met in the beginning. Or Ravenholm from Half Life 2. Set up traps, distractions and other such things to keep them away. It'd keep me occupied, and would be a much better idea than trying to find a non-existent military outpost or safe haven.

One thing that is never really brought up in this things is the end game, though. I mean, even if you survived, the world is pretty much screwed anyway, so it's not like you have much to do beyond simply staying alive. I've never seen a fictional setting where things end up regaining any sense of normality.

World War Z is written by a survivor. Deals with the outbreak, zombie hordes, turning it around and rebuilding afterwards.

I'd head for my school, seriously these days they are build like a fortress.

Next to a highway means a huge wall at least 10 meters high on one side and steel pointed fences on the perimeter 2m high. There's a good stock of food (albeit shitty food whaddayagunnado?) but there's also a nearby mcdonalds to loot. There's a library to burn for warmth which is also an easily defensible spot, and best of all there's weapons. Bats, bows, and other miscellaneous equipment from PE. Also there's a workshop so woo hoo!

My house is the ultimate zombie proofed house. It exists in a world where zombies will never exist or be a feasible threat.

The zombie survival base I always dreamt of was far north, deep in the northern shield.

Something like that in a clearing except with a rope ladder instead of stairs. This is assuming we are facing zombies that can't climb of course... Anyway, around the base of that would be a fortified wall to hold them back while survivors make the mad scramble up top. All the canned food, radio and two thirds of the ammunition/weapons would be stockpiled up there. When the z-threat is minimal, subsist off the wild. Preferably off of fishing, hunting and maybe limited agriculture if it is quiet enough. You'd always be saving the canned food for any siege. Power primarily supplied by a power generator with ample supplies of fuel supplemented with a large stockpile of wood for cooking/heating purposes.

Always figured as a kid that this would be the way I would want to go out during the zombie apocalypse. Naturally, I don't have the resources to make such a thing real so I imagine I would try to make my way to the family farm and go from there.
