my girlfriend and i think that the ghosts might be the smoke monster disguised as former people that interact with certain characters like what happened with ecko

Quite possible, although I always thought the smoke monster was more like an animal in behavior.
Didn't the Others-Boss (forgot the name) once order it around to attack those mercenaries?
That seemed more like it was some kind of supernatural "watch-dog" for The Island.
