If you're a low paid worker with bills to pay, and you need the money, you'd be forced to come to work sick. This bit people hard during the earlier stages of covid, and it's not a good thing in any case.
If someone's bills are so much of a problem that you can't afford to take a day or two off whenever you get sick without pay your employer is either not paying you enough for a living wage in the first place, you're horrendously bad with money, or both.

Um, yes, there are an awful lot of employers (in the US and elsewhere) that aren't paying people enough. This is not news to anyone, or at least shouldn't be.

Because it was one of those conditions hard won with blood, sweat and tears by our great grandfather’s generation in order to ensure people are not penalised for being sick. Or children for being sick and requiring care by a parent.

Plus a single day - which is usually all most people need to get over the worst of the vast majority of run of the mill sicknesses - of wages is generally a lot less of a loss than the potential loss of a large section of a work area’s labor if someone who is sick comes to work and infects their colleagues. And this is not an open lather either; everywhere I have ever worked will allow only a single day in a week without a proof from a doctor or other medical professional that you are indeed sick. And if that sick day was a Monday or Friday, you needed the cert regardless.

Another way to look at it is a benefit in place of raw cash: paid days off for illness recovery, care of children or relatives who are ill, in exchange for a reduction in overall wage.
Well, I don't know about you but I'd much much rather have whenever I was sick the sick days I took were unpaid if it meant I was being paid more in general.

That's a problem with the system and has nothing to do with paid sick days or the lack thereof. In fact, minimum wage is supposed to exist precisely to force employers to pay their employees enough to live off of. Not that it actually does but it's supposed to be the point of it.

I don't even get that. Why would any business anywhere pay you for NOT showing up and doing work? If you call in sick and thus don't work, you don't do anything to deserve to get paid so you get paid. It's simply doesn't make sense.
Have we gone so backwards that you're unironically arguing that people don't deserve sick days? What level of Capitalism is this!?!?

It's a benefit everyone should have the same way my employer matches (some of) my 401K, giving me vacation time, holiday pay, insurance, etc. Keeping your employees happy and healthy should be something all companies strive to do for a happy and healthy employee is a better employee. If you don't, your employees may, I don't know, decide that they should strike because the lack of such a basic benefit is making their lives suck.

Well, if you ever decide to contract with a firm, that would be within your rights to negotiate. I'm sure most of them would be happy to omit or put the minimum legally required amount of paid sick leave on your contract.

Just you know, be aware of it biting you in the ass.

How can someone acknowledge problems with minimum wages and still say the bit about if you miss a day of work and you're in trouble, you suck at money. Fucking baffling.

So this next part is a geniune question and not an attack. @immortalfrieza have you ever held a job that a teenager couldn't do after school? Because you don't seem to grasp the benefits of a labour force which feels secure and valued. The only ways I can see that happening is either you have come from wealth and privilege, or spent your entire time in jobs that have no reason to value their empolyees.

No, the point is people deserve sick days. They just don't deserve money for not showing up and doing work. There's a vast vast gulf between unpaid sick days and "people don't get sick days at all." If I work a typical 9 to 5 job and get paid 15 bucks an hour, I would fully expect that if for any reason I didn't show up one day I would lose out on the $120 bucks I would've earned that day.

But then you need that $120 to buy groceries that month, so you drag your sick ass to work because you can't afford to call out, thus defeating the purpose of sick days.

Hmm... let's see... If I work 5 days a week every month, that's 2400 dollars a month. I think most people could afford to take one or two days off every once in a while and not be struggling to pay for food.

...I have seen boot licking before but JFC, you're just absolutely porn star worthy deep throating the boot with this take, aren't you?

Like...I'm at the point where I have to believe you're doing some kind of super meta joke here that we just don't get because I refuse to believe that someone could love the taste of boot so much that they'd unironically argue that people don't deserve paid sick days off of work...

That’s $2,400 before taxes. Federal, State and Social Security are pulled from your pay before you get your check. And if you have health insurance through your workplace then that gets pulled too.

We haven’t even gotten into rent, groceries, clothing, bills or transportation costs.

People deserve paid sick leave and PTO, but not getting officially penalized for calling out sick is a step in the right direction.

At least this weirdo is just hurting herself by believing that if she saves the company money giving herself food poisoning eating horribly prepared chicken, senpai-company will notice her

People deserve 1000 dollars a week universal income just for agreeing to exist in this nightmare world, let alone compensation for participating in it.

It is literally getting paid for doing nothing. If I'd known that was an option I'd be set for life before I graduated high school.
