You remember when they used to call it Wuhan Flu, in like December 2019?
That's odd, the first time I heard of it was in December and it was specifically called Coronavirus already, I didn't hear the term Chinese Virus until months later when right wings started being overtly loud on the Internet and around the same time the Wuhan Flu...

I mean I don't know where you get your news but it's probably not a neutral source.

Well, yeah, actually. Back when nobody was taking it seriously and I had a good few month supply of stuff coming along.

Still kicking myself for not investing in Lysol.

There were video leaks from Wuhan, mostly in the hospital, when it was overwhelmed. People collapsing in the hallways, overworked staff, that one Chinese doctor that blew the lid off it and then got "disappeared". It could be the case of wonky memory though. The idea of framing this as racist is really funny to me, it was the wuhan flu because it was first spotted in wuhan. Which is why I mentioned the Spanish flu, since the same thing happened there.
Ah this wasn't news in November, this was conspiracy theory territory for a whole 2-3 weeks in November.

Lel you should have invested in that "ZOOM" company which had nothing to do with the actual "ZOOM" besides the name.

I'll take that as a compliment.

Except that it didn't actually originate in Spain. Which is kind of the problem of such a naming system.
and YET you still call it the Spanish flu, and you don't call covid the Wuhan flu. Which is what I was talking about in my original post.

Didn't the Spanish Flu originate in Kansas in the USA though?
Yeah, it's a fact so well known even Wikipedia has documented it, the Spanish Flu is like the textbook example of a name of an illness being used to push an agenda and misdirect the public, really the worst example one could use unless you're intention was to prove you're ignorant about the use of this kind of terminology being used to push political agendas.

Even if it originated in Wuhan it doesn't matter, it's official medical name is Coronavirus, or before your infected SARS-Covid 19 I think, I don't remember I'm not that smart.

FFS would you quit it with MUH RACISM I was talking about how CCP was quick and thorough with not letting the name Wuhan-flu stick.
You guys are just LOOKING to call someone else racist.
There's no Wuhan flu because China isn't Spain, and it knows how to do good PR.

He's a great guy, love him to death. We were both pretty damned liberal, but he's fallen really deep into the left wing bubble.

Hardcore TDS type. To the point where he sends us Trump articles in the family group chat at least a couple times a day and goes on tirades.

You're just reminding me why he and I have had more arguments over the past few years than the last twenty is all.

It's more saddening than anything else.

I haven't called you racist, merely ignorant, I'm assuming you're simply unaware of the way these kinds of terminologies are used to push political agendas and giving you the benefit of the doubt, however you might want to check your news sources they're likely biased politically in some way as they keep using that sort of terminology instead of the official terminology.

I didn't use this terminology to push a political agenda. I used it.
**I'm not ignorant. I don't care about some people using it for something. They don't own words.

Coronavirus is a family of viruses - they can have lots of different effects depending on strain.

Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) is the name of the disease.

The name of the specific virus strain that causes covid-19 is SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome - Coronavirus - 2). 2, because it's the second identified coronavirus strain that has caused SARS. SARS-CoV-1 did the rounds 15-20 years ago.

I don't actually. I talk about the Great Flu Pandemic of 1918. But I don't refer to it as Spanish flu. Scientists don't classify viruses that way either. I figure the bare minimum I could do is not perpetuate a historical misconception.

No disagreement that I have been getting increasingly radical over the last 4 years. Though that's largely the product of disillusionment upon seeing just how deeply rooted this broken system goes and the understanding that it is impossible to truly escape from it. Though by European standards, I'm actually a pretty unspectacular, boilerplate leftist. Which more than one person who was born and raised across the pond have been very un-shy about telling me.

EDIT: Thinking of radicalization though reminds me. You should see what Fox News did to my grandparents. I miss them. That certainly did nothing to slow my move leftward.

I do find it bemusing that moderates have a lot to say to us about how being leftist will only drive people further right, but when I tell those same people that the policies and actions of the right wing have driven me further left, they think I'm kidding. Like it's inconceivable that it could work the other way. Partly why my opinion of moderates is that they're just conservatives with commitment issues.

Everything in language is inherently political buddy, whether you like it or not, the words you use communicate your character, here regardless of your intentions using that specific terminology for the virus implies xenophobic inclinations.

Your refusal to acknowledge this simply makes you seem as ignorant, if not more than I assumed, but sure you're free to continue using it, just accept the fact of what that says about you and stop bitching about it, otherwise now that you know you can stop using it, your call.

The deeply rooted broken system isn't real. Reality is messy and problematic, and people work with mixed success to fix those problems; the people convincing you it's somehow all the system's fault have an agenda. Don't victim blame the entire species.

Don't listen to the communists on here about what is left and right. Europe isn't particularly further left than the US. Communists just like normalizing communism.

Well it can be called whatever, I don't particularly care, I'm just explaining that what you decide to call it is not free of consequence, it's unfortunate that many people here seem to be too foolish to understand that, though if we're honest some are being duplicitous rather than foolish.

But anyway, I'm just here to call out these snowflakes on the fact that if they want to say offensive shit that's perfectly fine, but they then don't get to ***** that people are calling them racist or whatever, it's awfully funny how they claim to be owning those snowflake libs, yet they can ***** and moan for days on how they are offended that they are being called racists.

Oh I know. I'm just saying we can just call it Corona-chan for all it ultimately matters too. It's a fairly pedantic point for either side to argue over. All that matters is that everyone knows what everyone else is talking about.

My problem is the tendency of people to attack a word I used instead of addressing an argument I made.

The system is real; parts of it are arguably "broken" and which people have no interest in fixing.

"The system" is in effect the sum product of a load of societal forces with different views vying against each other to make it work in their favour. It is therefore inevitable that it fails some people more than others, and overwhelmingly, those it fails most tend to be the politically weak. In some ways the system will undoubtedly be inferior for society as a whole, which will be perfectly tolerable to the people with power so long as they broadly benefit. The system can also be rigged to self-perpetuate advantages, in which case the system definitely is part of the problem, because it becomes an inherent obstruction to improvement.

That's what we should expect from reality being messy and problematic.

When you choose your words poorly, it undermines your own credibility. And the fact that you're getting this bent out of shape over it only makes it worse.
