I personally am not finding it too difficult so far (about 28 hours in), having played both Demon's Souls and several other games in the SMT series before (Nocturne, Persona 3&4 and Digital Devil Saga 1&2), but I definately agree that it's a lot more challenging than your standard RPG...
I think the best way to describe it would be as a first person dungeon crawler, turn-based battles, a 'dark' storyline, and a sort of pokemon-esque party system. (Enemies can be convinced to join your team, then leveled up and fused, etc.)
Space Station: Silicon Valley wasn't bad, didn't play too much, though.
As for under-the-radar DS games. Wellll, I'd say Strange Journey and TWEWY. Far and away the best two in my opinion.
