I was into season 1 but never really watched the other generations. I thought that the constant discoveries of new ways to digivolve was just an attempt to artificially lengthen the plot, both on an episode-by episode basis and concerning the overarching storyline.
If you're talking about starting out on the tabletop game, then go with guard, Tau can be tricky to use and may frustrate new players.
If you're talking about suddenly transmuting into one of the 40K races, then go tau, those little blue buggers have got it made!

In an article I read about DA:O prior to its release the devs implied that they were concentrating on the PC version more than the console version. I think that what they mean is that they will be working more on bringing the console graphics more in line with PC graphics the second time around...
