Prince of Persia, the first one. Playable game, even for an amateur, fun platforming, real dynamic characters, and a bit of combat, even if it was unrefined. Or Portal for laughs and easy mechanics that you can use in fun ways. Hell, just go for the whole Orange Box and get a little bit of everything, a shooter, an online FPS, and a great puzzler.

How was the very first Prince of Persia playable for an amateur? You ARE referring to the 2D timed one, right? Unless you mean the first Sands of Time one...

I would say something like Parappa the Rapper, Elite Beat Agents, or Phoenix Wright. Controlling an avatar on its own is quite a challenge to a beginner (up is up? Down is....WOOOOOAH, hold on...) so I'd think a nice, simple decision-based game would do it, or one of the first two which is just following inputs.

Minecraft, it does take some time to get into but it shows that you can do pretty much anything in games.

Woah, hold on buddy. I love games and all, but seriously better read a good book before you start comparing these two media.
ok perhaps i spoke a bit to quickly before saying things, their two different mediums and unfair to compare each other, the both have great qualities,
i apologise for my previous outburst :p

COD hurr durr.

On a serious note I would say one of the following of artistic impressions:
Jade Empire
Shadow of the Colossus
Okami

And if it had to be a shooter I would say Bioshock or Halo CE [I have to put in Halo]

Black Ops.....because that's what games are all about these days...easy cash-ins.

Personally i would pick Super Mario Bros. because it's the most important game in history (i would maybe choose "Pong" but it's a little bit too premitive).

Either the 1st Fable or a Zelda game such as Wind Waker or Twilight princess.

Those games show great progression via a solid story along with fairly common game elements such as fighting, collecting items, and escapism through the surrounding environments.

Ocarina of Time, it's simple to pick up has great story, and has just the right amount of challenge in game-play for an introductory game.

Are you high ??? Comparing a book to a video game...seriously stop putting video games on such HUGE piedestals. You need to get out of your basement, go to your local library and read a little bit before you say such stupid things.

Shadow of the Colossus and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

PoP:SoT takes like 5 hours to finish and it's easy. Shadow is just awesome.

There are some video games that are actually better than most books, while there are some books that are better than most video games. Are you high? Calm down and let someone think what they like, just as they respect your right to think what you like.

As for the thread: StarCraft. Why? Simply just because. Would it work? Who knows. But lets see, for SCIENCE!

(Plus Portal's pretty good, too.)

i spoke out of turn, i didn't mean to compare them because you can't compare them they are different. I was just trying to justify ther reasons for givinf osmeone the game and the reasoning behind it like using book hooks and the same premise's as their favourite books to draw them into the media, thats all i meant i am currently enjoying the video game media more than books ATM. recently playing through the mass effect series has been better for me than reading the prachett novels it's just my opinion. but like i just said comparing them is something i shouldn't of done. like comparing football players to basketball players.

I kinda want to say Mario Kart 64. The concept of kart racing is grounded in reality but then the items, tracks and characters within signify it as a video game. It has great music and also has multilayer so you can experience it with other people.

Portal, it's quick, it has none of the horrible stereotype gimmicks that gives gaming a bad name, and it will force them to think.
