Realistic answer: Probably some kind of hammer. It don't make allot of noise, doesn't require reloading and can probably penetrate a man's skull fairly easy...
Unrealistic answer: Probably a power fist (from Warhammer 40k)... They can crush pretty much anything and I can kill allot of zombies without getting tired.
Another weapon that might be good would be the lasgun... No I'm not kidding... It's got more or less infinate ammo since it's solar powered. And while it's weak against galatic monsters and well armoured targets it's definetly powerful enough to kill unamoured humans (=Zombies).
According to The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, a 'Trench Spike' is the best melee weapon. However, a .30 Caliber M1A1 Carbine is rated as the best firearm. But I am limited to 1 item which negates carrying ammunition, so the Trench Spike.
A really sharp sword. Or a really big one so it didn't need much sharpening.
Seriously, the vast majority of zombie flicks/games has them shambling slowly along, so why waste ammo picking them off at a distance?
Dead Winter was neat like that - sure there's a near superhuman arse-kicker taking them out in style with guns... but there's also the girl with the mop.
