This would be my list of games that I would want to play one last time before I died, assuming I owned them and the required systems & stuff. Some of these are games I missed out on.

1. KOTOR
2. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
3. Kingdom Hearts
4. Goldeneye 007
5. Ocarina of Time (never actually got to play it)
6. FF7 (Again missed out)
7. Super Mario World (never beat it)
8. Kingdom Hearts 2
9. Timesplitters Future Perfect
10. Chrono Trigger (Missed it)

I love threads like this, it's basically a giant list of games I should be playing instead of writing lab reports!
So anyway...
10) KotOR 2. While buggy and not as Star Wars-y as its predecessor, it offers a terrific story, quite good moral choices, all wrapped in basic D&D rules and Star Wars lore. And HK, can't forget him...
9) CIV4. It's one of those "holy crap, it's 4am already?!" games. Sid Meyer is absolutely diabolical, with his hideously addictive games, and funny references, and Gandhi concluding every diplomatic agreement with threats of nuclear annihilation. Oh yeah, the main menu music is amazing as well:
8) Monkey Island 1-3. Really, any one of them. I'm personally partial to 3, but the first two have shaped my childhood. They're just plain fun puzzle games. And if you dislike them, well, you've got the video game taste of a dairy farmer :p
7) Deus Ex. Not only does it balance stealth, tech, and gunplay almost perfectly, it also has a story involving the Illuminati, the Knights Templar, global conspiracies, population control, terrorism, and the UN. Happy surprise, this story is NOT stupid.
6) Morrowind. It's just...wow. You get off the boat and step into a world so alien, yet quite familiar. It was freedom, but sadly the combat wasn't all that great. Good story though...
5) Half-Life. Yep the original. While I love the second one, you just need to play the original to see how so many of today's FPS elements come from, eg loading of guns. Plus it brought us Counterstrike, the great great great ancestor to those insipid CoD things. Well, few things are perfect...
4) Freelancer. It's a space sim, and sadly one of the last. I guess today's frothy ADHD gamers lose interest in a game if there aren't explosions/tits on the screen every nanosecond, and can't fathom how somebody would spend hours flying through space doing nothing but enjoying the scenery and murdering the occasional pirate or Britannian patrol.
3) Warcraft3+TFT. Awesome game, awesome story, awesome characters, and awesome easter eggs. Plus each unit has its own witty/hilarious quotes when it is clicked often enough.
2) GTA:SA. I'm a bit torn between SA and VC, and ultimately settled on SA because it improved the car and plane handling. Other than that, both are great, and both are absolutely worth playing. Just stay away from that GTA4 thing...it'll give you leprosy.
1) A game with shitty combat, stupid puzzles, terrible controls (fuck you, fixed camera angles!), and only average voice acting. Music's pretty good though. I'm of course talking about Silent Hill 2, the game that epitomizes how interactivity can bring a story across like no movie or book can. The story is tragic, and the In Water ending is both the saddest and most satisfying conclusions to a game I have ever seen. If you haven't played it yet, go find a copy somewhere. It's worth every penny!

Edit:
Honorable mention: Minecraft. Sadly, this is disqualified for not being a real game (not having a goal, plot, story), but a terribly addictive time sink. *sigh* the hours I've played that thing could have been used to cure cancer...

Toughie. I'll go with the 'they must experience the game with the impact/fun value it had at the time of release' idea.
Standing the test of time is part of what makes a good game great.
Of course it does - but put it this way, the games on the list have titles in their genre released later than they were, which technologically are better. A lot of people review and criticise a game's graphics, sound design or control schemes these days, so while the gameplay of the games is obviously still awesome (wouldn't be on the list otherwise, would they? :D), some of the industry standards for the previously mentioned technological aspects have vastly improved (try telling me Goldeneye's control scheme doesn't feel weird after years of using the shoulder buttons to shoot).

Another factor is that games like GTA and Street Fighter have had sequels which are superior games, but I listed the older games because those are the pioneers.

the problem I have with recommending the episodes for HL2 is that episode 3 has not been released yet and the way 2 ends, it would be a pretty low blow for the player, considering he's going to be dying and all lol
Don't worry, there's a good chance we'll all be dead before we ever see Episode 3 anyway.

Oh yes, I went there.

OT: In no particular order:

1) The Orange Box (Ah, see how I got around the multiple games problem there?)
2) Shadow of the Colossus
3) Metal Gear Solid 3
4) Bioshock
5) Heavy Rain
6) The Longest Journey
7) Silent Hill 2
8) Star Fox 64
9) Max Payne
10) Beyond Good and Evil

What is the difference between Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and MGS3: Subsistence?
Nothing at all. Or at least not as far as the game itself is concerned. Subsistence is simply the special edition which included loads of extras on a separate disc. Kinda like Metal Gear Solid 2 which had a special edition with a "Substance" subtitle.

Actually, its not just the bonus disc that has extras... there are loads of extras and plenty of tweaks added to the base game as well...

Not necessarily in this order:

1) Chrono Trigger - Do I really need to explain this one?
2) Professor Layton and the Curious Village - Simple and elegant, and its impossible to put down once you start.
3) Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem - Quite possibly the only game that's every made me question reality.
4) Second Sight - One of the most underrated games of all time, with an amazing story and ending.
5) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - A game that just gets how much music and gameplay can be intertwined.
6) Actraiser - RTS meets sidescroller, and just a ton of fun, with a rich setting and simple story.
7) Resident Evil 4: It's just fun. Plain and simple. It does so many things right, from it's setting, to it's way of making fun of itself, to the horror elements, to the weapon upgrading system...Every little piece of that game adds up to make a great experience.
8) Mass Effect - Let's face it, it's about as close to exploring outer space as any of us will ever get.
9) Unreal Tournament - Most fun I've had playing an FPS multiplayer. It's challenging enough, has a ton of different modes, lots of great weapons, bot support, online support...and it did all this before every other game went and copied them.
10) Pong - Because it's important to understand your roots.

GTA 4 ten times.

Seriously though (although rather reflecting my ten favourite games as opposed to the "most important/influential" or the ten games which offer the broadest understading of gaming):

1. GTA IV
2. Vice City
3. COD 4
4. Tetris (Gameboy version)
5. Mario Kart (SNES)
6. Manhunt
7. Fallout 3
8. Resident Evil 2
9. Tekken 3
10. Super Mario Land
Please don't take this as a personal attack, it's merely an expression of surprise; but I don't like a single game on there. I enjoyed Tekken 3 as a child, but that's only because I didn't own any other multi-player titles.
I actually dislike most of them.
I never played Tetris as a child, I didn't own any game systems when I was young enough to have enjoyed it and I never played Resident Evil 2 (to my knowledge); but the rest of the games are truly awful.

Wow, it's not often I meet someone who likes only games that I don't like. (obviously we might share some games but none of your top ten)
Good to know that people are buying these games though. Someone has to.

OT:
I'll give a couple of options for some of them.

1. Final Fantasy (One of the main series that isn't an MMO, just pick one with an art style you like. Or default to 1)
2. Baldurs Gate 1 / Planescape: Torment / Fallout 1 (An interplay RPG basically)
3. Pick 1: Starcraft/Age of Empires/Command and Conquer: Red Alert
4. Doom/Duke's First Game (never played Duke's games)
5. Dark Age of Camelot/World of Warcraft
6. GTA: San Andreas
7. Crash Bandicoot/Super Mario Brothers/What ever Sonic did well in platforming (same with Sonic, never played his games)
8. Darksiders/*shudder* God of War
9. Fable: The Lost Chapters
10. Defence of the Ancients (DotA) / Heroes of Newerth / League of Legends

It's a little strange to see Silent Hill 2 only pop up a few times.

One the spot, I don't really have a top 10. A top 5 on the other hand...

5. Red Dead Redemption

4. Portal

3. Half Life 2

2. Bioshock

1. Well... Silent Hill 2.

No offence taken. There is some cross over in our tastes just not in our top 10's. I really like Doom, San Andreas, God of War, Crash Bandicoot and Super Mario Brothers. Most of the games on your list I have never played and in the case of MMORPG's, interplay RPG's and RTS's I've never played anything in the genre.

I wasn't suprised that a couple of people so far have commented on GTA IV (I presume as it is not mentioned explicitly you didn't like it) as it did seem to divide people. But thats what great about gaming (and life) if we all liked the same thing the world would be pretty boring or perfect not sure which!

Totally agree that a sandbox should be included. I enjoy the less serious Saints Row 2.

Adventure games such as these would make a great example of games. I would go with Shadow of the Colossus for scale.

Metal Gear Solid 3
Metal Gear Solid 4
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (essential for more Big Boss backstory)

Final Fantasy 6

Certainly two of my favorite sets of games. If we go with only one and concentrate less on the story then I think the first one does enough justice.

Half Life
Half Life 2
Great story telling in both of these series. The first Kingdom Hearts and the second Half Life would be great additions to this list.

See what you all did here, though?

Even within genres you can find more difference than simply choosing a sequel.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[platform]
?[2d fighter]
Saints Row 2[sandbox]
Shadow of the Colossus[adventure]
Metal Gear Solid[espionage]
Final Fantasy 6[rpg]
Tetris [puzzle] (sadly subbed for Kingdom Hearts)
Half Life 2[fps]
?[sport]
Twisted Metal 2[driving action]

tl;dr: throw out the 10-game rule and go with one of each genre.

HINT: someone make a genre-wars thread to conclude games per genres.
