I don't really get emotional over games, I tend to have a hard time connecting to the characters on any other level than the most basic. However a noticeable exception was the first Darkness game, specifically the bit were you go to see your girlfriend and end up just sitting on the sofa watching TV cuddled up together. It was a very poignant moment and showed the depth of feeling between the two characters.

Other than that Super Mario Brothers for the NES, poor Mario...Peach just won't give it up will she? No wonder he keeps wanting to smash his head into bricks all the time.

Lost oddesey .

It was the first game where i realized i was immersed in the game and cared for the characters . The 1000 years of memories are beautiful short stories that tells us the characters background . Most of them are sad but some evoke joy or anger . Since the protagonist had amnesia, these short stories bit by bit help define who the character is and what he has been through . Up until i played that game , i thought being immortal would be awsome , now, nOt so much . Really a great game.

I've been looking forward to Dear Esther without having known anything about it, just seemed like a neat concept. Thanks for reminding me to pick it up, if I have anything interesting to say about it I might let you know.

Spoiler Alert.

Bastion deserves a mention here. The scene in which you are carrying the body of your friend turned foe, walking along a corridor while all your enemies are shooting at you, only for each and every one of them to slowly stop...that one simple moment told completely through the games mechanics still resonates more deeply with me than any triple A title I've ever played.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Shame they never quite achieved the same quality with the sequels.

I've always had a soft spot for Fire Emblem games - simply because of the once they're dead, they're dead mechanic.

Especially because of the support relationships. If I've worked hard to make two characters fall in love, it cuts me deep to have some great fell dragon swooping about and ruining my attempts to be cupid.

Indeed it was a great moment in the game which made that event later on so much worse. It also made the ending confusing but that is an entirely different discussion.

I've actually played a number of emotion inducing games, such as:
Kingdom Hearts
Final Fantasy VII. VIII, Crisis Core
Nous (More psychological than emotional though)
Chzo Mythos series (Same as above.)

But the latest and greatest emotional game that I've played lately would be Katawa Shoujo. It can't be described until you play it.

Katawa Shoujo is the most emotional game that I've played. I can't say anything about Dear Esther right now though since I'm too poor to buy it.

To The Moon was that last game I played that really tugged my emotions. Finishing it actually put me in a good mood.

Please, if you haven't played it, just go ahead and grab it. It deserves some serious love from the community.

A couple movies and series come to mind, but talking about a game...

Quite a few FPS's have had the power to get me all emotional. Not that much in recent years, but during teenage years. Okay, seriously speaking, Bioshock 1 or 2 comes to mind.

The ends of Ace Attorney 1, 2, 3 & Investigations had me on a real emotional rollercoaster, as did the end of Ghost Trick. Say what you want about Shu Takumi's games, but he can really drive a narrative to that darkest point and then make you scream with joy at that last minute resolution.

The Stanley Parable really got to me. The way it played with narrative and game conventions...I'm not sure what I felt, but I sure as damn hell felt it.

And trite as it may seem, there are still two scenes in FFVII that get me. Have since I was a kid. And the end to Crisis Core...I knew how it was going to end, but that didn't stop me from chugging Mega-elixirs and fighting like I could still change things.

Oh, and uh, totally wasn't on top of the world when everyone survived the final mission of Mass Effect 2...

Oh, Persona 4? Yeah I really invested in the characters and the ending was a big mix of happiness and sadness yadda yadda yadda, but near the end of the game they kidnap this one character and...ugh. I saved them in one day, used up all my stored mega-powerful items just to get through and save that character because I couldn't leave them there.

Mass Effect series I guess

For some reason there is real life in the game, Especially the things they pull in the ME3 demo
I'm wondering how ME3 will square off against the previous ones but what I've seen so far impressed me

Ghost Trick did that to me, while the PW games were pretty sad at the end, I just did not get the same shock and sadness I felt at the end of Ghost Trick. I wanna also put in Heavy Rain, I did not tear up or anything like that but just how everything played out was really well done.

For me that scene sealed the deal when
only one guy is left shooting at you, only to be promptly smacked over the head by one of the others...and the music of course

Katawo Shoujo, was unable to even look at it after I finished it becuase of how emotionally well it got me attached to the characters.

Dear Esther, I have to admit, didn't get me as well as I had hoped it would. I think the main problem was the occasional moment where I would get lost but I'd feel more annoyed as I tried to find the "right" way, so that unfortunately distracted from the emotional side of the game.
