Yes it is you dummy. Thats exactly what free speech means, not being punished for harmless words or gestures or images.
Then maybe you can explain to me the tons of libel suits ?

Free speech dosen't mean say (or do) whatever the fu*k you want to whoever you damn well please.

Anyways i'm not wasting my time arguing with you, you definitely have no clue.

Edit @michael_ab , you use the quote box instead of the reply box :)

cvni2oe87n, tell me, what would you do if i randomly walked up to you, and flipped you off?? im pretty certain you would run me down and kick my ass, or shoot me whichever is more conveinent
no i would not, no rational person would. an irrational person would respond to and insult with violence, but a rational one understands that sticks and stones can break your bones but words cannot.

there is a button labeled quote at the bottom right corner of each post.
ooh cool thanks

but that is what drives society, its respect for your fellow man, the following of the social contract, imagine if anyone at any time were allowed to insult someone to their face anyway they like? and the other person unable to retaliate in any way? free speech is all fine and good but it is made to prevent unlawful censorship of ideas, not to go around doing and saying whatever you please just for fun

I'm pretty surprised on the responses in this thread. At least where I live there's a law against "harassing a police officer" which gives the cops the right to fine you if you start fucking with them. And honestly, that's the way it should be. If you could fuck with cops without any consequenses, who would respect the police anymore?

The man got what he deserved, and if he seriously thought he wouldn't get fined for what he did... Well, he deserved it even more.

I am being serious, i truly believe that it should be legal to flip anyone off and it should be illegal to respond with violence or any sort of financial punishment
oh dear then this is gonna be interesting, let the games begin

That probably goes under the catch-all "disorderly conduct"

I'm gonna go right ahead and assume you do actually know what "the finger" means, so while it is harmless in a physical sense, it is still badgering a person whose responsibility (as part of his job), is to uphold the law and keep people from disturbing the peace.

Giving people the finger is tantamount to saying "f*ck off" to the cop. While everyone has a right to say that, the cop also has every right to punish the man. This is because of the fact that while everyone has the right to free speech, they also have the responsibility to not abuse that right, and not disturb the peace (as it were). In this case, it was done by disrespecting the cop, to which the cop responded as anyone could imagine he would.

Look, basically I'm just trying to say... How you might respond to anyone else, at least try to be a bit more civilised around a cop. He wasn't really in the wrong here, for responding the way he did.

Fining the man does nothing but help restore some of the cop's pride because he can feel superior for having taken some of the man's money. the cop was too petty to let it go and ignore the insulting hand gesture like any child is taught to ignore a bully.
i dont know about you but the last time i ignored a bully i came home with a black eye
