Canada doesn't have free speech? If they don't, do they lack lawyers? If they don't, why is he accepting the ticket.

So he flipped off a cop. Whoop-dee-fucking-doo. Exactly what statute was he violating? It sounds like he grudgingly complied with the officer's requests, then decided to vent his frustration by flipping him the bird. Stupid? Yes. But unless he's breaking the law (I honestly don't know jack about Canadian statutes), he shouldn't have been fined. It's as simple as that. If the police were to issue tickets and fines and arrest people on a whim, rule of law would cease to exist.

Like I said, maybe he was violating some Canadian statute, because I honestly don't know anything about Canadian law. But if he wasn't, then the police officer is at fault, not the idiot driver.

Heh, I live in the Chicago 'burbs and if you did that to a copper around here, the fine would be the least of your worries.

Obviously, this is bad.
I sure hope you're joking, we're living in one of the freer nations there is on earth...
While that's true, Canada is still more authoritarian than the states and I don't think our "freedom" is going to last too long, comrade.
More authoritarian than the states ? in the USA he would have had a 50/50 chance of getting tasered :p

I get it that "fighting the power" is cool, but i really can't believe people thinks that disrespecting a police officer *who's just doing his job* (he wasn't harassing him or anything) dosen't warrant some kind of retribution.

Really though, the guy was stupid enough to flip off a police officer RIGHT to his (OR HER) face. And that deserves a ticket just solely on the fact that the guy is and forever will be, a dumbass.

besides Canada has to pay for its medicare SOMEHOW :p
Last time I checked, it's not actually a crime to be a dumbass. Cops just like to play God, that's what this is about. I'm just glad that in America, you can't get arrested for disrespecting an officer [http://boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/07/harvard.html].
The guy disrespected an officer after just getting a ticket. Its proven the more shit you give a cop the more likely hes not going to let you off with a lighter citation. In the future they guy should have been less of a pompous ass and more of a respectful citizen. Besides, he wasn't arrested he just received a larger fine and in my book if hes dumb enough to disrespect an officer IN FRONT of the officer he deserves the ticket on account of his stupidity.

Its not a crime to be stupid, it is however citation worthy to give a cop shit for doing his job.

Professor gates was also being a belligerent asshole and he got what was coming to him. The cop got a radio message about a possible break in, he went to check it out and found that the professor was not breaking in. However the professor had a hissy fit (like all professors have) and blamed racism. I do believe racism was involved but it wasn't the cop.

Okay, maybe I was wrong. I've never been in the States, though I do have friends who live there.

If I was the officer I would've just talked it out with the guy.

No, you most likely wouldn't have. No one would. The cop probably had a hard day, and now this asshole (whom you seem to be defending) flips him the bird. I would fine the guy, and so would you.

$110 is pretty steep for this low level of stupidity. I would have given him a $50 then given him a verbal warning about how disrespecting people for doing their job is no way to go through life, and if he carried I would have slapped on the $110 fine and told him to have a nice day. I think the cop was just fed up with these people and he made an example out of one of them.

Well, when you put it that way I have to agree. $50 seems a lot more fair than $110.

Is is really so hard though, just to show respect and be done with the whole thing. Instead of being an arsehole just for sake of being an arsehole?
Should the guy have flipped off the cop? No, I don't think so. The cop is just some guy who was doing his job. I do believe, however, that it is the man's right to give the cop the finger, even if it is morally reprehensible. To punish someone for essentially saying "Fuck you" is abuse of power in my book.

Deliberately being offensive to law enforcement? I believe this falls under "stupid tax".

I once saw a video of a guy who videotaped his friend walking out of his car and flicking a police officer off. The Officer took out that stick thingy and started beating him and he ran back for his car.

While it's good you're thinking outside the box, you're not living in a social vacuum. Gestures and phrases have implied meanings behind them, and pleading the innocence of the gesture in this case is absurd.

It's all about the implications behind his actions. He was disrespecting the law enforcement. That definitely should lead to repercussions. Free speech or not, you are not supposed to insult cops.

Disrespecting a police officer in any way leads to punishment. That is how it typically is in most Western nations.
