I don't think you guys screaming about free speech are respecting the cop's rights.

After the fined gentlemen "expressed" himself, the cop in kind expressed himself by taking advantage of a negligible enforce-if-you-want-to law to be used in this type of situation.

Two-way road, GUY!

I'm amazed at how many people sided initially with the fined guy. Must be because of the age-group here.

Trust me, its not the age group. I think mister finger was an idiot, and im only 17. Never had a cop issue, but the finger strikes me as the WRONG way to handle it anyway....

The peace was not disturbed, the cop just saw a hand gesture. light reflected off a persons hand and hit a cops eyeball. where is the fucking crime in that situation?
Ok, come on now. Keeping the Peace isn't all just stopping physical violence, it's also about keeping society from being disorderly and/or disrespectful to other people.
You can't, with a straight face, tell me that saying "F*ck You" to someone (in all seriousness) is at all respectful to anyone.

Wait, a guy flipped off a Montee after he was caught speeding on his Zambonie? What a hoser. (Note I'm actually as Canadian as you can get without being Canadian.)

NEW CHALLENGER!

Disrespect that goes unchecked is not OK. Whilst I don't promote violence as the solution to all problems, if someone displays unprovoked baseless disrespect something needs to be done about it. Ignoring it will not always make it go away, quite the opposite, ignoring it increases the "bully's" confidence and belief that they can get away with what they're doing and potentially encourages them to push the limits of what they can get away with.

A disrespectful little prick will always be in the wrong, more so than the frustrated individual who lashed out because of him.

Also in this case the individual being disrespected was a police officer, an authority figure. If people were allowed to openly disrespect authority figures without consequence, society would hasten in its decline into chaos.

The idiot deserves it for flipping off a fucking cop. Some people need to be fined $110 to learn not to do stupid things like that. He's lucky the cop wasn't a "bad cop" and didn't beat the shit out of him for it.
This says more about the state of law enforcement than anything else...

Aw Id just shoot him in the leg. :p

Really though, the guy was stupid enough to flip off a police officer RIGHT to his (OR HER) face. And that deserves a ticket just solely on the fact that the guy is and forever will be, a dumbass.

besides Canada has to pay for its medicare SOMEHOW :p
Last time I checked, it's not actually a crime to be a dumbass. Cops just like to play God, that's what this is about. I'm just glad that in America, you can't get arrested for disrespecting an officer [http://boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/07/harvard.html].
Is is really so hard though, just to show respect and be done with the whole thing. Instead of being an arsehole just for sake of being an arsehole?
Should the guy have flipped off the cop? No, I don't think so. The cop is just some guy who was doing his job. I do believe, however, that it is the man's right to give the cop the finger, even if it is morally reprehensible. To punish someone for essentially saying "Fuck you" is abuse of power in my book.
So it's right to blatantly disrespect someone who is only going about doing his business and then get all uppity about recieving a fine as a form of punishment? This isn't about your freedom to do or say whatever the hell you want, it's about disrespecting another person and thinking you should just get away with it. Giving someone the finger is a show of disrespect, now I can't give out fines in my shoe store but I damn well have the right to kick you out with a warning. Just as it's that police officers right to use his own discretion to punish someone for disrespecting him. There are certain rights that some people just can't exercise without expecting to pay for them. There are alot of double standards being thrown about in this thread.

Please tell me that was sarcasm...
No, that man had every right to configure his fingers any way he pleased and that cop took his money away for no reason.
He disrespected a figure of authority without any reason to do so. The fine was warranted. And even so you said KILL ALL cops. Even if you think the police officer was in the wrong, he shouldn't be killed for it, and why should every other police officer in the world get killed too?

As I said in the rest of my post, if the guy knew he would piss off the cop, then obviously it had an implied meaning behind it and he deserved the fine.
I'm sorry, I should have been clearer.

I was isolating the first part of your quote from the context. In other words, nevermind the guy and the cop, let's discuss what you're saying about the gesture itself.

Actually, it is about freedom and the right of expression. The man has a right to show the cop where to go. The cop does not have a right to punish you if you have not broken a law. If you can show me a law that says that it is illegal to be rude to a police officer, we can pack this debate in. It is a police officer's job to administer the law, not to ***** slap everyone who gets on his nerves. Your shoe store metaphor is different because a business is a privately run entity, and the owner can throw you out for looking funny.
