Good call on the kids behalf. Taking the animals attention to spare his sister is a very honourable thing to do.

However playing dead isn't always a golden ticket. Some animals will beat you into the mush even if they think you're dead. He's quite lucky that the moose had better things to do. Some animals where I live are much more thorough.

As far as learning it from wow... I'm sure there are much more common ways to be exposed to such common strategies. Just because he learnt this from wow, doesn't mean that wow teaches this.

You mean he used common sense and attributed the skill to playing WoW? You're right, that is amazing! Good for him!

Blah...
To use a favourite expression of mine, common sense isn't (common).

Though to be honest "feigning death" around wild animals isn't that smart.

While one WoW kid survives by taunting the animal. Another Wow player will die trying to cast a spell on it.

Not particularly WoW related

How many times in films has the protagonist drawn the Big Ol' Monster away from the cowering sidekick by throwing sticks and shouting "HEY, OVER HERE YA GREAT GALOOT!"

Also, faking death is surely an instinct. Just ask your local possums!

Meh, Bleh and Peh!

You missed a key point in that new scenario I created to help you out: His buddies could have given him the idea.

The simple act of telling your internet friends about an experience doesn't mean that everything you learned is from the internet; he used instincts and common sense, not knowledge gained from WoW.
So its COMPLETELY impossible that the kids thought process went something like this?

"Oh Fuck oh shit oh fuck there is a moose over there and its about to charge my sister"
"Fuck, I like my sister and dont want her to be fused to the ground with the help of a moose"
"Shit, shit, shit I usually save people from situations like this all the time in wow, why cant I do the same thing here?"
"Wait maybe I can...would taunting it get it away from my sister?"
"Probably, lets try it"
*Waves arms and shouts loudly*
*Moose turns its attention to boy*
"Oh man am I cool, I just saved my sister! I CANT wait to tell my parents and my friends about this. They're gonna be way jealous"
("I am a monster truck that walks like a man!")
"Oh wait. Oh shit oh fuck, oh shit. Its about to charge me now. This is not good, not good at all"
"Fuck what do I do, I'm pretty sure it can outrun me. Oh my god its starting to run at me"
"Shit what do I do. In wow I would just drop aggro by feigning death. Why cant I just do that"
"Well maybe I can. Maybe it will actually ignore me. Not like I have much of a choice here."
*drops to the ground, moose looses interest*

First, he used a spot check to find the hidden moose's candy, then stole it while his sister was the distraction. Next, he showed the moose that he stole its candy to distract it from his sister, then activated sneak skill to get away.

Bastard stole candy from helpless moose.

Sadly, he later returned to the scene of the moose attack with several friends to farm XP.

Hahaha moose attack. Of all the animals to attack her a bloody moose.
A Moose once bit my sister ...

No realli! She was Karving her initials on the moose
with the sharpened end of an interspace toothbrush given
her by Svenge - her brother-in-law - an Oslo dentist and
star of many Norwegian movies: "The Hot Hands of an Oslo
Dentist", "Fillings of Passion", "The Huge Molars of Horst
Nordfink".
Sorry about that, this person has been sacked.

OT: Well thats damn impressive. And that kids lucky it wasn't a bear. Playing dead doesn't work on bears. Well it does, if you can continue faking death while he's chewing on your head to see if you respond.
Mynd you, moose bites Kan be pretti nasti

I'm surprised that the tactics actually worked. I think in some situations, it wouldn't of worked at all and we'd be wondering what loot he dropped.

I...wait, -how- is this story yet again being posted...unless this is completely different moose attack I'm unaware of. Yeah, it was an interesting piece of heroics, but this is the second time I've seen it posted on the Escapist this year alone. And judging by the article on Kotaku, the events occurred in 2007. -_-

Still, judging by the comments, lots of people haven't read about it anyway...

Haha, that's brilliant.

OT: Kudos to the kid, that was pretty sweet.

Yet we won't be getting a news story about how instead of videogames turning kids violent, it's helping to save lives

Blah...
What 12 year old do you know that has common sense? Its amazing among itself.
Because all 12 year olds are pure idiots with absolutely no idea of how to do anything...

Some people mature or learn things faster or slower than other people. This kid's thought process was incredibly simple: Draw attention from the moose so that his sister can escape, then get rid of the moose himself. He 'taunted', which probably consisted of him flailing his arms, jumping, and yelling loudly. Then, he 'played dead', which he likely heard from the whole "If you're attacked by a bear, you should get in the fetal position and pretend to be dead" and just applied it to the moose. There's really nothing surprising here and it has nothing to do with WoW.

Given that there's no real evidence to support this claim (and it would seem like something a 12 year old WoW player would fabricate) I'm a little skeptical as to whether this really happened.

For the "it's just a moose" crowd:

Male moose (bulls) usually stand at 7-9 feet tall (w/o antlers) and weight in over a ton. They're grumpy and territorial and do charge and kick and bite. Though direct aggression is the cause of less death than automotive / moose collisions, anyone who's in the know should well know to leave the moose the hell alone and GTFO.

Anyway it has nothing to do with WoW, just common sense.
Honestly, my common sense would've told me to bail, and I'm probably twice the size of that kid...
