Actually, students have very little rights. Things students do not have off the top of my head:
Freedom of Press (I took a journalism class and the first thing they taught us was that students are non applicable to this)
Freedom of Speech
Right to Bear Arms (not disagreeing with this one students should not have weapons)
The right to just cause on searches
They do however have to inform your legal guardians, whom have to be present. They also can only conduct the strip search if you do not wish to leave the premises. As in they are not allowed to detain you.
They also can't let you leave except into custody cause you could get hit by a truck and be killed and they are accountable.
I don't think what the officials did was right but I want to raise the counterpoint of how many ibuprofen pills is a reasonable amount to have in one's possesstion, assuming a six hour school day: I would say four is the practical max considering you are only supposed to take two every four hours.
I carried pills but never more than I could use in one or two days. I have however seen people who have entire canisters of pills, sometimes multiple kinds of painkillers. My school system was very low tollerance, you were supposed to turn in your pills to the office with a note saying when during the day you needed them. What kind of parent gives a minor a large volume of pills to use at their discretion. Minors do incredibly stupid things, they hurt themselves and others and the school is held responsible for not stopping it.
What happened here is disturbing but I have to blame parents for giving their kids excessive numbers of pills.
I am not sure what happens if you refuse to consent/cooperate but your parent/guardian can not make themselves present in a timely matter. I would imagine you are put into police custody because if they suspect you have a dangerous number of pills they can't let you leave and put yourself and others at risk. As that would be negligent.
