A lot of people can strip search you... private security guards(if you intend to stay on the property) and airport security. Also, the supreme court does tend to support the schools power to do things that protect the rest of the student. Now, that doesnt mean that you check your constitutional rights at the door but they can do reasonable searches. But, I dont think that the search in question will be constitutional. Even the law is unclear as to what the school can and cant do concerning this issue.
Actually, students have very little rights. Things students do not have off the top of my head:

Freedom of Press (I took a journalism class and the first thing they taught us was that students are non applicable to this)

Freedom of Speech

Right to Bear Arms (not disagreeing with this one students should not have weapons)

The right to just cause on searches
They do however have to inform your legal guardians, whom have to be present. They also can only conduct the strip search if you do not wish to leave the premises. As in they are not allowed to detain you.
I am aware of that. I was referencing the part about chucking your constitutional rights at the door. (sorry forgot to edit out specific parts of the quote been up with the fiance for two days straight so needless to say I am tired)

Obviously, the school officials grossly overreacted. On the other hand, if the girl had overdosed on the meds and died, the parents would have sued the school and most likely won. If you hold schools to an unreasonable standard of protecting its student body with BS laws, then at least one VP in the thousands of public schools in the country will do something stupid.

The U.S. is slowly becoming a police state. It's kinda scary. I dont agree w/ hardline conservatives on many things; but gun rights is one I stand firmly w/ them on. If people dont have free access & rights to own guns; there's nothing stopping a police state from forming and enslaving the people.
(note: enslaving doesn't mean whip & make work cotton fields. It means control obsessively, strip rights of, & rule w/ fear of punishment).

"School officials said the court was 'wholly uninformed about a disturbing new trend' -- the abuse of over-the-counter medication by teenagers." - CNN

When the hell did this become a new thing? Last I heard people were abusing over the counter medicines in my dad's school days. It was easy to find that crap around my old Middle School.

If the Supreme Court uphold this act by the school board I'm not enrolling my kid into any public schools in Arizona.

Have any of you seen the girl that was stripped? I don't think it was that whoever was chosen to actually carry out the search was really looking forward to it either.

God help me, I know people are gonna hate me for saying that.

unwarranted strip searches of ANY kind are horrible and go against human rights. The fact that this was done to a little girl is simply added horror.
Further proof that America needs to look into their own goddamn country and fix their own problems. This is terrorism from the inside.

They do however have to inform your legal guardians, whom have to be present. They also can only conduct the strip search if you do not wish to leave the premises. As in they are not allowed to detain you.
They also can't let you leave except into custody cause you could get hit by a truck and be killed and they are accountable.

I don't think what the officials did was right but I want to raise the counterpoint of how many ibuprofen pills is a reasonable amount to have in one's possesstion, assuming a six hour school day: I would say four is the practical max considering you are only supposed to take two every four hours.

I carried pills but never more than I could use in one or two days. I have however seen people who have entire canisters of pills, sometimes multiple kinds of painkillers. My school system was very low tollerance, you were supposed to turn in your pills to the office with a note saying when during the day you needed them. What kind of parent gives a minor a large volume of pills to use at their discretion. Minors do incredibly stupid things, they hurt themselves and others and the school is held responsible for not stopping it.

What happened here is disturbing but I have to blame parents for giving their kids excessive numbers of pills.
I am not sure what happens if you refuse to consent/cooperate but your parent/guardian can not make themselves present in a timely matter. I would imagine you are put into police custody because if they suspect you have a dangerous number of pills they can't let you leave and put yourself and others at risk. As that would be negligent.

You just gave pedophiles everywhere images of children licking their crotches... good job -_-

And to be honest that is not fair. I used to take heavy tranquilizers for an excessive ADHD problem that would make me jump around and basically could not sit still unless you tied me down. I used get in the bottle in the morning and take my prescription with no problem. The volume of pills is irrelevant. It was a legal drug, which the child could have bought herself. (I think, dun remember if it is still on racks or over the counter)

In this particular case, the excessive number of pills involved was Zero.
So, basically, you blame the parents for giving their kids zero pills.
AND I AGREE!

GIVE OUR CHILDREN MORE PILLS!

Ibuprofen? Really? If that's the case, I could have been strip-searched for carrying a bottle of Tylenol in my bag.

However, this does not surprise me either. It really is sad how far down society has gone. Only a couple decades ago, nobody would have cared.
