I don't think it has anything to do with him being young or materialistic, I expect he's just not right in the head. Chemical imbalances can do this kind of thing to a person. He doesn't need jailtime, he needs mental help and some pills probably.
Admittedly you're probably right. I just hate seeing stories like this that I always convince myself are never going to show up in the news again... I'm going to go watch some funny videos on youtube so I don't turn emo now.

But I want to comment on the reactions I'm reading. Aren't we jumping the gun a bit on thinking this is a "Gamez R 3bil!" story? TBH, I haven't seen anyone actually blame the game for this yet, and to panic over it now comes off to me as a bit overly defensive. Cool your jets, people. Save the media outrage for if/when someone actually does make a violent game-violent behavior connection with this. Then go crazy.
I think most people are defensive about it (me included) because of that silly psychiatrist on fox news. Not to mention there's been a shitstorm about it for ages now. You just know when this hits the major media networks there's going to be some really silly drama and claims going around.

Hunh... I could make a Philly joke (being from Pittsburgh), but it seems in extremely bad taste.

So I'll say this. I can wonder what went through his head when he htought about this. Also, this is why we need to hit our kids. If they dont fespect (fear-respect) you, this is what happens.
Fear and respect are not interchangeable.

EDIT: Quoted myself for some reason... Fixed.
Not how I was taught, but I grew up in a military family.
Fear's great when you want immediate control, but the tactics that induce fear also induce hatred. What happens when you become more hated than feared?

I know exactly what you mean. But this kind of shit will always turn up. There have always been things like this, and there's no reason for that to change now. I wish it were any other way.

FUCK my generation, seriously, it's just embarrassing to be a part of it. Also, with shit like this happening increasingly often, no wonder people think video games cause violence, but really i think it's just 89% of my generation are fucking retarded, and 1% kill their parents over video games.

Wow. I feel both enraged at and sorry for him at the same time.

[sub]Also, can we leave the imminent 'games don't cause violence waaah' comments out of this thread please?[/sub]
Actually a lack of video games caused violence.

Actually It's far less than 1% of kids. It's probably less than a 10th of a percent.

It's overblown because the other 99.93% of all the other American kids who are just normal aren't as interesting.

This kid had obvious mental instabilities, If it wasn't over this, It would of happened over something else. Just a matter of time.

Just by reading this it makes you wonder... Bad breeding, not enough beatings as a kid, or psychotic tendency's. Whatever the case this is purely a sign for help, not in a religious way; but beating his own mother to death... wow. Hope he likes his girlfriend in prison named Joe...

Man that sucks, I guess video games can provoke violence in some people. But I feel pretty sorry for the kid, especially considering he now has to live without a mother, he must be really upset. Although I am feeling pretty angry at him for going and killing someone with a hammer and chair leg because they took your PlayStation.

I just don't know how to feel.

That isn't necessarily true, video games are one of the most mentally addictive things in the world and what is worse is that they are easily obtainable by children or confused and angry teenagers. Plus he would have been playing violent games a lot which probably put some of those bad ideas in his head, I think if he had lived without a console he wouldn't have been so explosively angry and so impulsive.

Wow keep talking like that and you're going to banned, it really isn't that bad. Maybe it is more like 5% of your generation in your country are retarded, but I doubt the rest of the world, and I highly doubt they are retarded. Stupid, yea maybe, retarded definitely not.

A serious psychological evalutation is in order here. With my rudimentrery knowledge I can tell that this kid is just f***ed up.

Beyond that, why does sh** like this happen. This is simply a way for people to brand the media as harmful

Only in very rare cases do games cause this, I know first hand, I have autistic close family who play alot of violent games, There fine, infact probably more stable from them, When he gets angry He goes and plays GTA for a while and He's good. But to beat your mother to death with a hammer and cremate her in an oven while still alive, No game has ever shown that level of murder, So getting ideas from that is not really right. And games being mentally addictive is more in the eye of the beholder, Some people find them addictive, alot dont. I do play alot of games, being honest, But I never feel the need to miss sleep or skip work to play them, Addictiveness varies by person in my opinion. People get addicted to endorphins released by there brains to stimulate pleasure, not the item/game.

Video games, and other media in general can NEVER be the cause for a crime like murder, its only the excuse.

Also, this captcha has Arabic in it! WTF?!?

It's almost amusing how many people think that hitting him a whole bunch would have..stopped him hitting his mom.

Now I'll give you the whole 'he was nuts, and the console didn't make him do it, he just needed a reason to vent his rage in a murderous way' thing.

However, just as devil's advocate, I would suggest that some people can get psychologically addicted (not chemically) to gaming, as they can to any pleasurable activity. Take that away, and you're going to cause an extreme low in that person, who, if they're already predisposed to being violent, could react that way.

I'd also suggest as a possibility, that we leave in a much more extreme world in terms of pleasure now. I think a kid gets far more feedback and pleasure from say 'Super Mario Galaxy' than he would have got from a bucket of plastic soldiers, or going further back, a wooden castle with some figures.

A few things come to mind when I read this.

1) Clearly a screwed up child from the start.
2) Gamers are introverted, gentle people with a fixation on the fantastical and outlandish. We're not sociopaths in waiting. I consider this child to be outside our circles. However..
3) The world won't see him as a disturbed creature in need of help, they'll see him as an other excuse to ban video games forever.
4) I still say Fox News is to blame.

I've played as many-if not more-violent video games than most and I have no desire to actually kill anyone over anything. I'm slow to anger, and most people like me for my massive gaming knowledge.

But mention that you play video games outside of the store, and, "Oh no, it's one of them! He's got a gun and he's gonna kill us all!" from idiots. Mall rent-a-cops hit HARD!
