The only music I've purchased this year was the Bastion soundtrack. Can I pick that?

- The World/Inferno Friendship Society 'The Anarchy and the Ecstasy' - Every album from this band has been amazing and this was no exception.

- Andrew Jackson Jihad 'Knife Man' - Lyrics of the year, quite simply. They've clearly evolved from their debut days while still retaining the raw energy that made me like them in the first place.

- Larry and His Flask 'All That We Know' - Much like AJJ, these guys have come a long way. They'll probably get overlooked by many, which is really a shame.

- Lemuria 'Pebble' - Took a while, but when it did grow on me, Lemuria's 2011 album got an illegal amount of plays from me.

- Star Fucking Hipsters 'From the Dumpster to the Grave' - Stza's newest album got released to yet another hail of "sellout" and "too poppy" claims from 12 year old suburban punksters. Great album. A They Might Be Giants cover with Yula Be'eri, special appearance by The Coup's Boots Riley and an amazing closer are among the best tracks this year.

-Wire 'Red Barked Tree' - How many great bands from the 70s are still out there going strong? I can count them with one hand myself and Wire is one of the few. Red Barked Tree is no Pink Flag, but it does sound fucking amazing.

All in all 2011 was not the greatest year for music. Especially in the punk area. Lots of meh releases and revivals/reunions by bands that should've stayed buried. I did overlook some albums, and the hip-hop I do listen to had a good year in 2011. Money constraints are to blame.

Nevertheless the above albums were the cream of the crop. Here's to an awesome 2012.

EDIT: Did a bit of editing. Forgot 'Pebble' was released this year. Elaborated on SFH and Wire.

I dunno, I thought it was actually pretty good. I get the hate though, Metallica doesn't exactly scream spoken word/experimental/noise music. I mean, Lulu is metal in the same way a field of rabbits is a multiplex theatre. Remove all your preconceptions about the artists involved and you might find it's pretty good. Not great, mind you, but pretty good.
Oh don't get me wrong, I love Lou Reed's work with The Velvet Underground, and his solo work is pretty damn good as well. I honestly tried so hard to like this album as it was two artists that I like collaborating together, but it just doesn't work in my opinion.

The only album this year that truly impressed me was SBTRKT's Debut Self-Titled LP, which was very impressive. A great mixture of Dubstep, R&B, and Soul that really hits a sweet spot for me, great stuff.

Other albums worth mentioning are Bjork's Biophillia, and The Kills Blood Pressure.

I'm also looking to pick up James Blake's album in the near future too, once I get around to it even though the reception for it has been rather mixed.

The year's been seriously good for progressive releases. It's like all my favourite bands have decided to release this year. My favourites have been:
OPETH- Heritage
WOLVERINE- Communication Lost

STEVEN WILSON- Grace For Drowning
ARCH/MATHEOS- Sympathetic Resonance

SYMPHONY X- Iconoclast

I wasn't impressed by the new Dream Theater...disappointing.

Outside of the progressive realm:

MASTODON- The Hunter
FOO FIGHTERS- Wasting Light

1) Radiohead - The King of Limbs
2) Beirut - The Rip Tide
3) Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues

besides those three, the most interesting releases for me were all EPs

2011 was a pretty awesome year. I'll shoot for a top 10:

1. Opeth - Heritage
2. Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn of Events
3. Mayan - Quarterpast
4. Devin Townsend - Deconstruction and Ghost
5. Lady Gaga - Born this Way
6. Scar Symmetry - The Unseen Empire
7. Symphony X - Iconoclast
8. Kimbra - Vows (wish I could finally find this somewhere...)
9. Iced Earth - Dystopia
10. Vader - Welcome to the Morbid Reich

By far my favourite album of this year has been Evanescence. Five god damn years I've waited for that thing and it blew me away.
