So i'm reading more and more about 2012,and the apocalypse or elevation that will happen in the year.My question is...why? Why do i keep hearing about this? i mean, the whole thing started with the Tribes of what is now south america. But these were people who didn't know where the sun went at night.how did this gain so much credibility?

Hey guys, I heard a meteor is going to crash into the Earth on December 26, 2008. I don't have a single source to back this up, but I'm certain it's going to happen. Please donate to me via PayPal.

People will believe anything. Remember Y2K? And (I think) this is the only apocalypse in recent years so with technology we can spread the word about the end of the world easily, it reaching a lot of people who believe it and continue telling everyone who they can how 'We all gonna die!!".

The funnies part here is the "Didn't know where the sun went at night". seriously man, read up a little on these 'South American Tribes' you laughing at. I'm very much not the conspiracy type, more the level-headed scientist/critic type. And even I start wondering when the most astronomy obsessed culture to ever walk the earth, with some VERY odd artifacts names a date where "The gods from the sky" will return.

These people are attention whores and the media is giving this attention because fear sells.
That's a more accurate less trolly answer. I'll back that one.

Actually, they pretty most definitely did know(religious stuff aside). It's quite possible they knew more about astrology than we know now as what we know they knew is a lot more than any other culture at the time and most of there writings were destroyed.

Still, it's bullocks.

I'm not laughing at them. and I have done research. They thought that if they didn't sacrifice a human every night, the sun wouldn't come up.(I don't know if the Incas did this however. I'm speaking mainly about the Mayans here.)
sorry.maybe i should not have brought religion into it.

Heh heh, I'm ready for the end of the world. I'm going to ride the Panamerican from Alaska to Chile and back up to Mexico in a motorcycle in time for the end of the world. If it doesn't happen, I'm going to rub it in the Mayans' faces.

Yeah, take that ancient tribal people! You were wrong when you prophecised the world's ending! Bet you feel pretty silly now!

I just watched a documentry (that was made in 2003) about how the world is supposed to end in 2004, 2008 and 2012. I wouldn't exactly expect the world to end in 2012 at all.

Mer, your opinion and point isn't far off from some of the other ludicrous apocalyptic statements out there. If anything, yours makes more sense.

Diminishing birth rate.
Mathematical probability.(No seriously, there is a math equation that proves the world is fucked.)
The creation of virtual reality sex.
Evolution(aka the happy ending to humanity.)
An anti-biotic immune plague.(humanity is currently at it's weakest to plagues EVER, and diseases are begging to become completely immune to medicine.)
Every atom in the world spontaneously ceasing to exist.

Far more likely than furries/4chan, to destroy the "world".

who actually needs logic proof to see that we were a doomed species before evolution or whatever other force actually hit us up to what we are now? nothing lasts forever, not us, not this planet, not the solar system or the whole damn universe. there's an end to everything, and honestly, it doesn't matter when it comes.

the funny thing is, we care so much about everything when in fact, we're just inflicting pain by thinking about it. sure we're going to die, but why not take it a bit more lightly? you're not getting out of here alive.

you can bet your collective asses on that the day some meteor crashes into us, i'm gonna put a chair on my roof, make me some popcorn and enjoy the mayhem, if only for the last time.

I don't think you're too far off...

Anyways, the main reason people think 12/12/2012 is Doom's Day is because the Mayan Calender ends then, and thus, the world should end at that time, what with time not being recorded by an ancient civilisation that is now defunct. Modern day conspirators have jumped on the theory, and the media has exaggerated the idea to no end. Like Y2K, a genuine fact has been warped into something that will 'doom us all'.

Of course, it's all bollocks, but you know, like I said, it's spread into the minds of some idiots.

People will believe anything when the end of the world is brought into question, and the "end of the world" is supposed to be on my birthday :p Most of the stuff they are talking about really doesn't make sence at all, like they say the polls might switch, or some calender made like 2000 years ago that just stops in 2012 or some stupid chinese fortune teller thing, all the reasons are idiotic. Trust me nothing is going to happen, it was said the world would end in 1999 and it didn't.
haha mine too!
Happy birthday buddy.
NOW THE WORLD WILL END MUHAHAHA

Take any idea, no matter how utterly moronic it may be, and a certain number of people will believe it. What we need to do is track these people down and ask them how it is the Mayans are able to predict the end of the earth, but not the end of themselves. Granted, this will sway them one iota, but the tortured logic in defending their position will be well worth it.

In conclusion, my personal favorite end of the world scenarios (took some digging, but damned if I didn't find it again) are [a href="http://www.livescience.com/technology/destroy_earth_mp-1.html"]here.[/a]
