I find myself agreeing with the man. Why would you have a month dedicated to that when you could just make an effort to ask the person sitting next to you, who is alive and here, about themselves?
The "you" that decides that Black History Month and the "you" that could talk to black people aren't the same people.

Yes, absolutely, Black History Month really isn't much of a solution. However, it's not fair to compare it to a good solution, it needs to be compared to a probable one. And it compares favourably to "don't bother", which seems to be the popular alternative.

While I agree that this woman is clearly a couple of lettuce leaves short of a salad (pardon my French), I find it strange that so many people state that this kind of lunacy is rife in Florida. I've been there more than once and not once did I run into anyone who I would consider wingnuttish. Maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough or my glasses filter divvys out along with UV rays...or something like that.

Excuse the outsider-stereotype but I thought this kinda thing happened in Texas rather than Florida...

Wait, really? You are unaware of how batshit Florida can be? There's two whole twitter profiles dedicated to just Floridian insanity, Florida Man [https://twitter.com/_FloridaMan] and Florida Woman [https://twitter.com/_Flor1daWoman].
Then there's other more high profile stuff like the Bath Salt Zombie, and dozens of high profile cases throughout even the last two years.
Florida's crazy.

We actually touched on those sort of thing in British schools as well, it rivals the British's messes XD

Well...how big is the population of Florida, and how often does one of them make the news for something like this.

Probably more likely to be saved from a shark attack by it being struck by lightning to meet one of them.

EDIT:

Well personally I live in a very ghetto area in Indianapolis so you can probably guess what side I would take in this situation. Especially after being exposed to gang violence my whole life, and a society that allows it.

More OT though: Yeah shes a crazy racist blah blah blah, I think that some of the people in this thread are taking this article a bit too seriously.

Courts always side with women, don't you see, even when they don't.
No, especially when they don't.
Because nothing says "We Favor You" like removing custody of your children. :D

Yeah, I often hear there's a lot of drugs in Florida. Like, a oodles of drugs, just out the wazoo. It might just be the climate, though.

On the other point, I'm not opposed to Black History Month if it's a choice between that or a complete whitewash/nothing at all. I also have no idea of the amount of blood, sweat and tears that went into it being possible. I just think it's sad that that it's come down to those two choices in the first place. It at least sparks thoughtful annual debate, which is a good thing.

Apparently there's also a similar observance in the UK. I literally did not know that until several minutes ago.

We touched on a couple of those subjects you mentioned in my university in the UK. It wasn't part of our course, people just showed a lot of interest when one of our professors started mentioning things like the Indian boarding schools. There were also some eugenics programs running in the US before the Nazis came to power. It's all bleak and harrowing stuff, but so many people still wanted to know more. I think doing so changes people for the better, in the end.

You know, you wouldn't even have needed to specify her being from Florida for us to figure that out. Seriously, why is it always Florida?
Maybe the intense sunlight is baking the Floridians' brains, drying out and destroying all but the reptilian core? I'm not sure, I live in England, I'm not too familiar with the sun.

I never understood why the things taught in Black History month aren't just taught in regular history lessons. It's a pretty fucking big deal in human history. I find most history education is lacking to be honest. Maybe if people were more aware of what has happened before, they might be able to use the human mind's wonderful pattern recognition skills to notice some really worrying historical flashbacks occurring in Europe right now. Rise of right-wing nationalist parties across the continent (and the British Isles), racism and xenophobia , economic uncertainty and potential for another financial collapse, political tensions becoming even more strained...

Okay so I veered massively off topic there...

I do hope the little girl is returned to her father, and hopefully brought up to be a curious, intelligent citizen of the world. We need more good people on this planet, people who don't seek to make arbitrary divisions between us.

Well this is just beyond racist and crazy, its not as if schools are sidelining say English or math education to brainwash children into loving black people right? I mean.... it is Florida so maybe i am giving them too much credit, but i do not think black history month is a month of only learning about black history.

Oh sure, I agree it's sad, it's just something that comes up a lot, and one of the usual two responses is "But it doesn't totally fix the problem, wouldn't it be better if there just wasn't racism?" (usually with that video added), which is (often, I think, intentionally) missing the point rather.

I don't think it's intentionally missing the point, it's just a breed of idealism. I mean, I'm sure we can both agree that "no racism" would be preferable. But as it so often happens, people don't think "good enough for now" is quite good enough. And then some will accept that "good enough" is the best that can be done at the moment, while others will argue that supporting the "good enough" solution kind of makes you opposed to making things better.

*facepalm* God damnit, world....just...just god damnit.

All I have to say is that there's a reason the "I Don't Want To Live on This Planet Anymore" Prof. Farnsworth meme is already played out and old. Well, two reasons: that episode itself is a year or two old, and there's FAR too many situations for which it truly is a perfect response.

Basically every time your Faith In Humanity meter is forced to reset back to 0.

How about, you know, discussing "black" history like it is part of actual history? That's the way it's handled in every sane country I know. How could you even teach a class on, say, the 17th century and not mention the global slave trade? The idea that the history of a part of the population needs to be segregated and have a special month devoted to it, is kind of creepy when you start to think about it, right?
You'd be surprised how many American curricula whitewash (pun intended) everything from Columbus's voyage to the beginning of the Revolutionary War, and then the Westward expansion and civil rights pre-1960s. I think parents and "patriots" complained about anything that cast a bad light on the formation of the country.

Also, Black History Month was meant to be a time to focus on black history in the country, not the only time it's supposed to be taught. But then again, notice that they gave it the shortest month of the year....
