I wonder what was going through their minds? After 72 hours of sleep deprivation, people start having auditory and sometimes visual hallucinations - that could be awesome while watching TV
As someone who has stayed up that long before, I can tell you that the visual hallucinations are a given, and they are not awesome, it's very hard to focus and usually you feel very scared.
I stayed up for 4 days and didn't see anything (that I know of), but I was definitely hearing stuff that I wouldn't have otherwise... such as thinking my roommate was talking to me when he wasn't even in the apartment.

I went out for a smoke and thought a rotting dog was trying to attack me...I'm pretty sure it was a shadow of a car driving by, but I lay on the ground, unable to move, for about twenty minutes.

Wasn't that show only supposed to be 24 single hour episodes? How can they do 84 hours of that? Re-runs? Jeez, that would probably annoy me more than the actual doing nothing for 84 hours thing.

I definitely could not do that, I spend at least half a day asleep (on average) and couldn't make do with much less

I watched the entire series of Jericho in one sitting(It helped that at the time I was unemployed with just my computer and Hulu to entertain me). About 15 hours worth but I felt like I could take on more. And that show is about as intense.
24 is a cool show but I get tuckered halfway through one season as it is a lot of energy with little to show for it. I am about willing to bet that in every season nothing really effective gets done until 3/4's through. Like a Tom Clancy novel.
Still, I would have done the gauntlet. 86 hours? Child's play...
