Whoa, just realsied I haven't posted at all since January, though I've had so little time I guess that's understandable.

Congrats on the 36 monther though!

As for the sub-topic going on, I basically joined at the start of 2011. For some reason I would only post in a thread if it was new, like, if it had less than 20 replies. And generally, I got a lot of replies for my posts, well, a reply for every post more like, and never did it involve any arguments.

Nowadays when I do post I pay a lot less attention to the length of the thread, and I feel my comments are less eloquent / generally not as good. Perhaps I should get back to only posting in shorter threads...

I wonder if some of the grumps have to do with "survivor's guilt". You're still here while hundreds of people have come and gone. And a lot of people you used to know have left or gotten banned.

Now you're the oldsters gazing across your lawns at the pups playing in the street. You've been there and done that, seen it all...and sound like you're getting a little crotchety in your advancing years. From the sounds of some of the things you've said Daystar I got the impression you were feistier in days gone by.

Do you folks find the User Groups more comfortable because they present you with a controlled environment of familiar faces?

What is the likelihood for gamers to remain gamers and hang out at a site like this for years on end? As far as games go I spend more time playing mighty Hidden Object games so I'm not exactly one to jump into the Console War debates. And my PC won't play most simple PC games (I think the optics drive is going out) and I've lost money on The Witcher and The Force Unleashed because in the 1st case it keeps asking for "Administrative approval" or something so I've never gotten past the "do you wanna play"/set up screen and in the 2nd my graphics capabilities are so poor the game plays at super slow speed.

Now I'm depressing myself. Where's MY cane?
Everyone I knew who have been banned are in contact with me via Skype, teh Twatterz[footnote]I will never call it Twitter ever again because I prefer Twatterz. :p[/footnote] and other sites, so I doubt it's survivors guilt on my end. Could possibly be, but I doubt it.

And I now prefer user groups because, as many have said, I'm less likely to be insulted there for stating an opinion. Gonna take a recent example, but I reviewed Duke Nukem Forever and posted it here. In that review, I called it the "Worst game I'd ever played in the years I've been gaming." which, in my opinion, it is. Queue posts in a similar vein to this about half way down the comment thread.

Yes, dear, you're such an edgy nonconformist for disliking a first-person shooter. Now tell me all the reasons why disliking Skyrim makes me an idiot.
Now, stuff like that, while it isn't happening to me every time I post or indeed every single post, is happening on a regular basis and seeing it happen just grinds on my desire to post in the forums. Another example is when I saw Daystar say something about Spec Ops: The Line a coupla days ago. He got quoted to hell and back because he made a statement that hinted he didn't like the game. He didn't call it the worst thing ever made, he said it failed at doing something, maybe satire, I wasn't paying much attention. I think in the first page of posts, about 5 to 10 of them were people responding to that quote in a bitchy way, saying Daystar was X, Y, and Z. Shit like that can get frustrating to deal with.

Also another reason I'm a bit crotchety with the site is some users seem to need to get a reputation and build it up or maintain it. Just...seeing shit like that makes me want to slap them. Why does your standing on a message board with good content matter one bit? I mean yeah, it's nice to be quoted and messaged by people saying "Oh, you're cool and funny." and what not but why strive to be that guy?

TL;DR, Things have changed since I joined, I don't like them so I ***** about them instead of doing something about it. :p

I feel the forums have changed a lot on here. Especially since late 2011. I used to frequent this site all the time, post a lot and generally spend a good deal of time here.

Nowadays I can't stand a majority of this sites users and their attitude towards things.
This is also how I feel.
I pretty much come here out of habit and I spend most my time in one user group nowadays. More fun, less hassle.
I know dem feels.

I don't know what happened to the forums in the last 6 months, but I don't like it.

I can't even put my finger on it, something just changed for the worse.

I keep coming back but something here has changed. It feels less like discussion at times and more like "I'm better than you" or "My ways of viewing things are better than yours" or "stop liking what I don't like"

Apparently if you're believing with the OP or anyone else for that matter, you are wrong. Also you are holding humanity back.

Seriously. There is some level of unsettling hate hidden throughout these forums, yet I keep coming back because I can't find any place better.

Here's a triple stein cheers to you. I've been here a while, but without the impressive post count. Still I'm on here nearly every day.

You guys sound like a bunch of old men siting on a porch complaining about the youth of today...

You know what you need: a stick for whittling. And another rape thread. Or a freindzone thread.
Oh goodness gracious me, is it rape o'clock already? I'm afraid that I will not be able to attend, for I have misplaced my raping shoes.

First, congrats OP on the 36-monther. I'm a slightly faster poster than you, but I'm still in the same boat regarding the 5,000 post mark.

Second, for the "hi-jacked" part of the thread, I haven't really noticed much of a difference on the forums. The more things change, the more they stay the same

I have stopped posting for the most part. Just all the topics as of late haven't really been interesting to me. Then again I barely posted interesting stuff anyway so I doubt people noticed.

I've pretty much stopped commenting here as well. Absolutely hate the community here now. It seriously needs a clean up. The 2008-2009 community was probably the escapist at its healthiest. It has utterly devolved since then.

I think they need to do a few things:
1.Forbid Image Macros and other ilk that doesn't belong here
2. Police their no flaming rules better
3. Create more user moderators. I know that the escapist lost a few employees when they went through a small financial crisis a few months ago but user moderators are free!

Other than that. The community can't be helped.

edit: Also if only they made one for 60 months lol.

Yeah, things have changed and yes, maybe not for the better.

But I find that the best advice I devised for myself has proved to be the most hand...iest. Find your niche and stick to it.

Good at writing stuff up? Stuff which is good in grammar and good in replaying your thoughts? Go to User Reviews [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/index/326-User-Reviews]. Grammar Nazis over there but your English will improve for the better. And the reviews are a joy to read.

You like to exercise your imagination? The Role Playing [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/index/540-Role-Playing] is available for you. And excellent place with brilliant people by the by. And i'm saying with only a cursory glance at the working of the place. :p

You like randomness? The Forum Games Forum [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/index/362-Forum-Games] has every possible situational comedy and intellectual comedy available. Same as with the RP forum, lovely people all around. Actually serves as a retirement home for the veterans. We're that cool.

The Off Topic needs no introduction. And neither does the Gaming Discussion. Because these two forums are more definitely the first places new users go to.

Religion and Politics is venom a place of intellectual discussion. Forewarning as it's filled with people with passionate beliefs.

Why am I writing this in a topic concerning an Escapist user reaching the 3 years mark(congrats!)? I'unno man... I like writing things. ;-; I just wanna be loved!

The forum kind of turned moved from one asinine controversy to another for all of last year. Personally, I'm just a little sick of the gaming community in general. I mean everyone got upset over fucking box art. There was a two month controversy over a shitty ending to a game. There was a one month controversy over Lara Croft kinda sorta looking like she was about to be sexually assaulted but she wasn't. There's a controversy that's still going on about some Youtube video series that ordinarily nobody outside of the feminist blogosphere would give a crap about, or even know existed.

Of course my options are this, Reddit, or not acting like an autist long enough to be socially functional in real life, so I hang around.

I agree with this point strongly, often it takes close to a day or more from when a post is reported for it to be modded properly, especially at the weekend. I get that with every user moderator created there's a chance of letting a corrupt dickwad into the fold but surely there's enough reliable long-time users that the risk isn't that high, and the site would improve from faster mod action.

I've always wondered why there was so few mods.

Couldn't hurt to get a few more, I mean, they could always revert it if it doesn't work out.

can somone tell me what it is?

seriously, mabye I haven't been here long enough I obviously just dont pick thease things up

in fact I'd say theres even less of the "PC elitist everything yahtzee says is gospel cynical Bioware are awful all games arw awful" schtick going on
I sort of agree, there's definitely a bit more diversity to people's opinions these days (which is a good thing), but on the other hand it kind of feels like the community doesn't quite have the same character that it used to.

I don't really think the forums are angrier than they used to be, but maybe it has something to do with more diverse opinions making people argue more. I certainly remember a lot of bile being spewed at people that held opinions against forum gospel. People seem to have rosier memories, everything always used to be better, apparently. Given all the different opinions in this thread, I'd guess it's more down to personal perception, rather than any meaningful change.

Yeah, I'm with some of the others who have said that the forums has become a bit more hostile over the last year or so, hence why I become more and more thankful for usergroups.

It's still better than the majority of forums out there, but there's something unsettling around the place now. Like everyone is on edge.

Congrats on the 36 months though :D

Biggest problem I really see is that nobody blatantly flames. Instead they just act like a passive aggressive dickweed and think that making a snarky or sarcastic remark is a suitable substitute for an actual argument. The forums haven't gotten angrier, it's just that certain individuals have learned that being snarky and writing essay-long posts tends to have the mods look the other way.

It's why I've just been sticking in the roleplaying section for fun. And that section seems to have shrunk recently to just a handful of users.

Be careful what you say, I said this in a topic and suddenly all the 10k +, 3year + people started quoting me saying how they did know who I was... it was very, VERY confusing I can tell you :p

I like to read what the regular posters have to say, can't say I've noticed any palpable change, aggressive and judgemental people have always been so, and are unlikely to change. I don't really feel like I'm part of a community here, but I don't contribute much, so...

Where was I going with this?
