Those screens are actual-framerate I'll bet.
+1 to EVE being more fun to hear about than actually play.

It wasn't. =D Skip ahead to about half way, you'll see it was pretty stable, all things considered.

I was only joking, but thanks for the footage!

I gotta admit, EVE makes for some damned great stories and testimonies.
Played it myself for a while and I did get some interesting stories out of it, it's just a really slow burn, you can't even call it a grind, it's like having a flower garden and taking pride in keeping out the weeds and making everything look pretty and making sure no insects come to spoil the party.

Christ! It remind me of at the end of Clone Wars (not the CGI, the Genndy Tartakovsky version) when they zoon out of Coruscant and you seen the massive space battle with the Republic and Separatists ships. The difference was there was only two ships types in the battle and it was spread out compared to EVE battle.

I seem to remember a year ago (or perhaps two >.>) seing ~12 Titans lost in a single fight. The main power houses are extraordinarily rich these days.
Are you thinking of this maybe? Or maybe it was before then even. Most weeks only 2-3 super-caps at all get taken out :( And I think there were only 2 other big weeks since then

There's still a problem, if you want to be a part of such massive battles, you have to work in EVE. And don't get paid.
Like people here posting how much real money it has costed...
It's not that bad, in fact if you work for a big alliance they'll just straight up give you money. Almost no-one who lost a ship in this battle will actually have to buy it back because their alliance will foot the bill for them. And the alliances make money from all their members from stuff like ratting and mining, so they don't need real money (but the idea is, if someone wanted to turn all that ISK into real money, they could have done if the chose)

In fact it's even more cool, most of the resources needed to build decent ships can only be found on certain moons, which are pretty rare and only found in certain regions. So all the big alliances formed a cartel and decided to fix prices amongst themselves and deliberately dig less than demand requires to raise prices =D So the CFC, who lost the most ships, invented this idea and has a crud load of moons, so they make oodles of money without even trying

Whoever takes EVE's depth and high stakes gameplay and puts them into a more action based game will take the world by storm.
So it'll be just like real world organized gang warfare; the old and connected having the majority of the spoils and fun while the newcomers get to spill their guts out uselessly for their sake. No thank you.
It's not that bad.

Most corporations, especially specialized ones like EVE university, will go out of their way to help new members.

How new you are doesn't really matter as long as you understand the basic gameplay (which is quite complicated). What matters is having friends.

Hell, a major turning point of EVE was the Goons (newcomers with lots of friends) beating Band of Brothers (the old and connected) by basically swamping them with tons of newish players in cheap ships.

That's not to say EVE's for everyone. It's obviously not. But being new isn't nearly the disadvantage many believe it to be.

The video is actually sped up 90% hence why you hear him stop talking. he was only getting 10 fps from how overloaded the servers were. that video you see there was over 4-5 hours.

This is what I have in mind when I imagine the most big-ass space battle of all time.

EVE Online is a game for insane grinders and virtual tycoons, and I won't even put a toe into that game. But man, just watching these players...
Dude Ive tried to get into it twice but while its so damned intriguing! I just cant let myself get into it really.
Exactly the same here

Same here, I think it is the barrier to entry issue. You have to spend at least a month getting yourself set up to run anything of value in the game and you are bored to tears the entire time (or at least I was). That being said, I have watched my buddy play this game for years now and I would love to get to the point where he is, as it looks like loads of fun.
Actually in the CFC and HBC I know of atleast newbies can spend about a week training into a ship known as a Rifter and are very valuable in PVP for fleets like this.

They are known as "Rifterbros" and people will shower them with millions of isk (In game money) just for being new. When I joined my corporation I said "OMG A TITAN!" in my first big combat, and I made half a billion dollars because people thought I was so cute.
The Rifter had a use beyond looking AWESOME? I piloted one because I loved its design and that was the only reason!

I don't think I could ever play EVE, but gods is it entertaining to hear about.

I cannot imagine a battle with that many people and factions going even remotely as planned.

Rifters are generally considered to be the best frigates at that level, they are decently tough, hit hard and are good tacklers
...damn. And here I just sailed it because I liked the rocking motion. And the twin prows. What race did those ships belong to - the scrappy looking ones I mean

I love that people have banded together into coalitions and companies to essentially make their own economy. Kind of shows you how awesome or insane we are.

You can't get in as a Goon unless your SA though right? And I assume TEST are the same with redditt. Are there other alliances that a newbie friendly? And how hard is it to hook up with people? I don't have a good track record of meeting up with other ppl in my MMO experience and thats whats always held me back, because it seems like unless you do find other people to play with, you're missing most of the good experiences of EVE

If you're totally new the corporation I'd suggest would be EVE university. The corp itself will teach you all you need to know about gameplay, PvP, industry and everything else plus you get lots of free stuff to make starting out a lot easier and once you've been shown the ropes there's several larger alliances that recruit directly from EVE uni.

I personally also usually solo a lot in MMOs but EVE can easily be different with the right corp though. Just make sure you select one that's active in your own timezone, best to see which timezone corp leadership is in since every corp usually claims to be active in every timezone, you want to find one whose leaders are in your timezone. A specialized corp is usually the best as well, find one activity in EVE you want to focus on and then find a corp that focuses on that as well. Corporations that claim to do everything usually do nothing.

If you manage to find the right corp then meeting people and grouping up is rather easy, almost all activities are better done in groups and there's no limit on group sizes so active corporations usually have a fleet active that anyone can join to participate. This is why you want a specialized corp whose leadership is active at the same time you are, because then that fleet will be lead competently and will be doing what you want to be doing.
