Actually funny story - right now I am on my 3rd X-Box 360 my first one didn't die but I had it for two years and the warranty was just about up so I brought it in and got a new one. But, it was the second one that the story comes from.

I had no problems with my second X-Box aside from the usual weird sounds it tends to make and one night I just got done watching an on-line video from a game reviewer I tune into, who had his die and it was a dramatic video of the Red Ring of Death and I kinda laughed to myself and pretty much said along the lines of "Oh that has got to suck, good thing mine hasn't had any problems" and I even started looking up ways to somewhat prevent it i.e. putting a fan in front of the console to cool it down, etc. But, soon as I finally turned on my X-Box on to play some Mass Effect 2 and BAM not the RRoD but the Red Light of Death aka E-74 error. Luckily, it was still under the 2 year from Microsoft on the E-74 so I didn't have to pay for it.

But that is a textbook example of irony kids.

Also, one of my family members had your problem OP, where it refused to read the disk and just pop open the tray and I don't know how she fixed it other than just letting it sit over night and when she turned it on the next day it worked perfectly fine like nothing happen. Sorry can't help you past that though.

I don't see why people like this even bother. Maybe you should be a little more subtle with your advertising... You'd last longer here... Almost as long as the batteries you can get from Poundland, want long lasting batteries... Go to Poundland. [Winks]

Back on topic. I'm on my Fifth 360 . They tend to vary on life. The first one last about a year and a half before it caved in. The second lasted about 3 month. The third lasted about a 6 months. The Fourth one lasted about 2 years before finally dying. Now I've had this one since November 14 (My birthday) and I haven't had a problem with it yet.

Same thing happened to me recently. Turned out the lazer had died and needed replacing. I was pretty cheap to fix and was only in the shop over the weekend.

Off topic, but I don't see why people see 360 as being so fragile and prone to breakdown - at least in regards to how often other consoles and electronic products breakdown. I've owned 4 PSXs and my neighbour has had constant issues with his old Dreamcast and we've both had problems with our Xboxs. Think how many TVs, VCRs, DVD players, Walkmen, Mirowaves, etc, you've had breakdown on you. 360s aren't really anything special.

That shit happened a little to me, not reading discs properly, that awful chugging 'Help me... *cough* *splutter*' noise and reading DVD when I want Game. But I just restart it and all the world seems like an arrangement of epic buds coming to flower in the glimmer of the morining sun and all seems right in the world. that is, until you realise that the game your playing is just a rehash of the game you were playing 5 years ago... Best to just KILL IT WITH FIRE.

[ng as it was working perfectly well 15 minutes previous?
Well, no, not really strange, happened to me twice.. Working laser, then 2 mins later its broken.. Or the engine that moves the laser about inside the cd-rom.. Happened to me once with dvd player, and another one with pc cd-rom.. Exact same noise as you describe..
Well feck it. Looks like it's off to Microsoft with my console then.

(I'd phone Microsoft but they're useless).
Try the online tech support as well. I know a lot of people say they're useless but they've always managed to help me...

Also disc drive might have kicked it, meaning you need to send it off to be repaired.
Goddamn it... trying to stay calm now but getting pretty fed up with all the problems I've had with this damn machine. Fucking Microsoft![/quote]
I've got to admit, they are pretty useless. My friends xbox is stuck on appear offline. He called them and they told him everything I did, preferences>online status>online. Needless to say, it didn't work. I told him to call hoping they would just go in and do it.

I had an occasion where my xbox would take 10 minutes to start up and freeze when I started a game. It turned out the hard drive was loose.

I will never understand why people ring Microsoft...

I won't ring them because people over the phone are damn near useless. Emailing tech support is the way to go, those guys actually have a few brain cells and can help. If your problem requires you to ring Microsoft though prepare to go through call centre hell...

I'm on box #4.... I paid for #1, got it warranty replaced, twice, then traded in box #3 for a discount on an Elite. I've had an Elite since Feb 2009 and have had no problems whatsoever.

If your box was old it was really only a matter of time before a heating problem caused something to go wrong. The first generation of boxes were poorly made indeed, but the new slim and the elite models have worked out fantastically.

My SNES, PS2, Gamecube and Gameboy all still work as well as the day I got them (between 15 and 5 years ago), and I've never had a problem with any of them, even after my SNES fell down the stairs and the GameCube got knocked off a five foot shelf during a bout of Ocarina of Time rage.

The 360 feels like it's going to have a hernia if you even pick it up to carry it into the next room, and everyone I know who has owned one has had it screw them over at some point.

What's funny is that this is exactly what happened to my previous Xbox. I had to end up paying for the repair though.

Did you do it through Microsoft or a shop? How much was it?

Call them, tell them you got the RROD (if you are still under the 3 year warranty for it), they'll send you a label, send it in and they'll just replace the whole thing. They've been doing that for a year or so instead of repairing them.

Picture proof you even have a 360?
*just checked your gamertag*

so you had enough time to play and get 27k gamerscore and your complaining your 360 breaks now? so your warranty is up...and now your pissed you have to pay? you do know that happens with the ps3 and wii right? if it breaks and its past warranty you pay for it right?

*looks at his launch pro 360 that still works and his elite thats worked for 2 years after e74, and his ps3* I just must be lucky I guess.
(by the way my elite 360 the one that got e74 was fixed and shipped back to me in 1 week and 2 days and it cost me nothing)

I feel for you. That does indeed suck!

I solved that problem though. It took me awhile but now I have all three gaming consoles..Wii, PS3 Slim and the 360 Elite. I gave my old 360 away even though I never had any problems with it and I bought the new 360 Elite. I just didn't know how much longer my old one would last.

But if one of the consoles does fail, I have two others I can still play games on.

Sorry to hear about that.

My friend just had his third RROD and Microsoft told him that his 3 year warranty is up (he has a 20Gb), so they won't be replacing this one. That means he will either have to buy a hard drive-less one and move his into the new "shell" (sneaky sales Microsoft) or just completely upgrade (maybe get the new "slim"). Not sure what he's going to do yet.

W
Thanks man.. Still undecided... tempted by a PS3 but I have so many 360 games now I'd almost just get the slim.

I've grown too attached to Marcus Phoenix and Commander Shepard to not see what happens them!

Hi guys

EDIT: Microsoft are now telling me I have to pay myself to repair thier shitty fucking faulty console that wasn't fit to perform its most basic function. That's just wonderful.
If it's so shit why are you angry it broke? It seems as if you're contradicting yourself.
