I haven't seen any 3D movies, but I can think of a one great thing that's a result of this 3D hassle: 3D LCD monitors, as they've got great refresh rates, starting from 120hz (60hz has been the default for since how long). Too few models yet, but progress nonetheless. I just care about the refresh rates.

No, A LOT of people feel the same way:
It doesn't significantly inhance the viewing experience,
it's more expensive to view that way,
a study in the UK found that 10-12% actually can't process 3D in the cinema thats more than 1 in 10 people who can't see 3D at all but are still forced to pay extra for films,
the glasses ARE A FAFF!, I wear glasses already and it's unbearable to wear more glasses on top especially for upwards of 2 hours,
it makes the screen much darker becuase it litterally almost is the equivilent of wearing sunglasses to watch a film,
it doesn't add another layer of depth (or so to speak) or intelligence or even meaning at all to films in the same way colour has, or rather at least it hasn't yet,
the best 3D film so far is Toy Story 3 and they set out from the start to make it so that the 3D isn't noticable and doesn't distract from the story, the best thing you can say about the 3D in that film is that you can't tell it's there so what's the point?

Well I have to admit 3D is sorta a fad these days. After Avatar it seems like every movie has to be in 3D these days, its sort of ridiculus. And yes many of them are the "Oooooo, I'm reaching out of the screen towards you" gimmicky crap that gets old very fast when you aren't a kid.

But movies like Avatar where the 3D element just adds visual depth to the movie, no I don't think its worthless. That's the kind of 3D that we should be looking forward to. Hopefully more movies like that will be made.

But until the time that 3D movies are the norm, there will still be loads of movies that use the gimmicky 3D to sell. When "movies" (and by movies, I mean films in their most basic) first came out there were "movies" about people doing everyday things, and people payed to watch them.

I don't care for 3D. In animated movies, I guess it COULD be ok, but, in real movies I just don't see the appeal. Also, I don't like it overall because I wear regular glasses and it hurts my eyes to wear the special ones over them (I'm near sighted, so I can't just take them off to watch the movie). Fortunately, they still do 2D viewings of everything (that I actually care to watch) so, it's not a problem.

Ill give 3d a chance when they stop making movies that have the title as subtext and the real title is something along the lines of "This movie is in 3D!!! Prepare your bowls for evacutaion!!!!!"

I'm sick of movies with retarded camera shots and horribly obvious CGI meant to take advantage of something flying out at you....

I don't see 3D tv being that popular.
You'll have a bunch of early adopters, like you do with all technology, but eventually people will see it as too much of a pointless hassle.
Hello, 3D porn?

I'm pretty sure the 3D fad will survive JUST for that.
I assume you've never watched HD Porn.... They produced very, very few after the first release batch, and for good reason.

HINT: HD reaaaaaaaaaaally brings out the flaws in the skin.

It's gonna die off, but not completely. We all know the only end for 3D, but none of us wanna say it, so I will.
3D porn websites. It's the only logical step. A monthly membership for porn that looks like it's going on right in your room? It's ingenious. $40ish a month, unlimited downloads... Gotta go. I have a web site to make...

Right now I'm not too fussed either way. I saw Avatar and while cool it was an average movie and the 3D didn't grab as much as it was hyped up to be. However I have watched sport in 3D and that was pretty cool. Having the depth of field to cross field passes etc was pretty cool.

I'm still not saving up to buy a set or anything and I'm quite happy with my HD TV but I don't think it'll die a death either. As others have pointed out the studios have pumped a fair amount of time and effort so they will push to make it succeed.

3D is here to stay, so get over it, and don't take away from those who enjoy it. Just like there are crappy graphics in 2D movies there will be in 3D movies.

Oh yeah soon 3D tvs will be sold where you wont need glasses.
then it will be an option in the menu to turn on.off

and then I will try playing Manhunt 52 in 3D and barf all over myself cause of the gore..

I bet your the kind of people who will complain when video games advance tot he point where you walk into a star trek hologram room and play Modern Warfare in VR... Holding a plastic gun..

you could tell me that wouldn't be awesome..but that would be a lie..

the only one. And in this case, you most certainly not the only one. Personally I haven't seen any 3D films and so have no opinion either way, but I know plenty of people who think it's only a gimmic.
*sings* You took the words right out of my mouth...

I prefer old 3D when it used to jump out at you...
I hope it stays optional, I don't think I could bare having to watch TV or game in 3D. I'm guessing it's another fad that a lot of people will disagree on.

Alot of people seem to think it's a novelty but I honestly hope it sticks around for a while. Toshiba has already developed a tv (which eventually will drop in price) which can display 3d without the need for glasses. It's very cool and I don't want to go back to films without it. Being able to see depth is something that can used to assist movie and game makers. It can be gimmicky but has alot of potential.

It's a cash cow novelty, consumers always go for the next hyped up novelty and the industry will will milk that sucker.
3D is very cool when done proper, but right now it's all going for the quick bucks, so it's all just very poorly made.

It's like the whole "going green" BS, noone gives a poop if anything actually is eco-friendly, just haveto have it to follow the herd.

So, am I the only one who thinks this whole things is just a novelty fad that will die a very expensive death soon? It seems that everyone and their mothers are obsessing over 3D and saving up their money to pay for five 3D satalite channels and an enabled TY.

I mean I understand why Avatar brought it back and that should have been it, every film since has just been a gimmick 3D. I also understand that cinemas/studios get an extra 40-50% on theri ticket charges, sothis may be their way of making up the lost revenue from video piracy.

But the technology is still a gimmick. The benefit it offers is purely novelty and doesnt add anything significant not to mention having to wear stupid glasses and paying out the arse for a special tv.

I saw a tv programme with an 'industry expert' saying that in 4/5 years one in four new tv's sold will be a 3D tv set. WTF? It's taken nearly a decade for HD to even start to become mainstream and that is a genuine massive leap forward in TV technology.

Avatar was a one off, the rest have been cash-cow gimmicks.

Does anyone else feel the same?
You must be blind or something 'cause it seems like almost everyone in here does (and they do not hessitate to tell everyone)... Except me ^^

3D Works well for gimicky movies and animated stuff, but for serious movies, I think we'll see it slowly phased out and see a return to "traditional" formats.

3D must die. We should be working our way to perfecting the 4&5D, and dare I say it, the ultimate 10D!!!
(Seriously, that is an actual dimension. Search it.)
