Techpriest sounds awesome and unexpected to me...others not so much.

I wonder if they're going with the "Old Republic" defense for putting guardsmen and Spess Mehrens on a level here; playing as guardsman you're a high-ranking badass, playing as a marine you're a 'regular' battle brother. The expanded universe has more than a few normal humans who can take on Space Marines, they just aren't the schmucks armed with only a t-shirt and a flashlight lasgun and a flak vest.
Only way they could really justify it is to have you playing as a Kasrkin or Stormtrooper, or possibly controlling a squad of them. I'd prefer the latter, personally, but it's probably a lot more complicated.

I wonder how they're going to balance the whole thing out since, well, you guys know, that Imperial guard are basically normal people and the Marines are trained and condiotoned from age twelve, as well as surgically augmented to far surpass mere human limitaions in pretty much every single way. Maybe the Imperial guard will be sort of roguish?

Hmm... Guardsman or marine. Beefy power armour and a bolter or a flak jacket and a laserpointer?
I think we'll have to wait and see how these choices will be balanced.

Personally I'm waiting to see the Eldar specifics. Or Tau, for that matter. It'd be pretty cool to have an XV88 to shred things with.

It's the Imperium of Man. From what the video says, it sounds like the classes for this faction will be Imperial guardsman, Space Marine and Texhpriest, although that's largely speculation. Looks pretty good, no idea how they'll balance it while remaining fairly true to the lore.

Here's the video.
Hilarious Avatar OP, I salute!

Hmmm... they really need to implement the thought of NO GOOD VS EVIL! That is not how WH40K works at all. The biggest alliance is between the Imperium Of Man. Other then that, the Imps look weird, the graphics looks better then most MMOs and it will kill the xeno, the heretic known as WoWAnti-WH40K Fans. I should add they stated they don't want to make a WoW killer, just another MMO. Is that such a sin? I also don't want one

Nice looking trailer, I specifically like how they showed some gameplay. I'm looking at you Dragon Age 2. The game itself looks pretty damn fun, looks like it utilizes a cover system, and it seems to look fast paced enough that there won't be a huge grind.

I hope I can be a Blood Angel..
Hey it's a BA Fan! Wait, you claim to be Sanguines? HERETIC! NEVER SHALL THE EVENTS OF ARKIO HAPPEN AGAIN!

Controlling a squad's an interesting idea, but I don't think it'd fly. Too alien to the MMO genre (like, "bad mix" alien rather than "innovative" alien). Stormtrooper or Kasrkin sounds about right though. A starting zone on Cadia with the Eye Of Terror yawning in the sky above you all fuck off and purple could be pretty spectacular.

Come to think of it, elite guardsman would be pretty easy to do. Basic training taught you your standard "pew pew" attack, now you've been specially selected to learn the fancy stuff.

Hardly a surprise. Though, I was expecting Space Marines to be a separate race from the Imperial Guard in gameplay terms. I really don't see how they're going to balance them properly. Either they can tend towards being background accurate, in which case the marines would be stupidly overpowered compared to the guardsmen so no-one would play them, or they could try and balance it out and just end up making the marines equally powerful to guardsmen, which is stupid from the background perspective.

That would be an amazing starting zone, actually. Since Space Marines and Guardsmen on in the same faction, they wont have to try and balance those two for PvP play, which should make things easier.

Haha, thanks! To be honest I've always been pretty jealous of your avatar. Such an awesome GIF.

That's one of the other things I'm concerned about. With things like WoW you've got two distinct factions and it makes sense. You can't do that with 40k, everyone's fighting everyone else. It's going to make things a hell of a lot more complex.

I have wanted to play as one of the men on the ground since playing Dawn of War way back when.

Even though I avoid monthly subscription games, this might almost be worth it due to the awesome factor of the setting. I just wish the whole set-up of a monthly subscription didn't revolve around game exclusivity- if I'm playing anything else, then I'm not playing with the time I paid for in the subscription game. If only the Hellgate London model hadn't proved itself impossible to sustain, I'd love to buy and play a standard version even if I'm not getting the new content of the subscriber version... I can justify a one time purchase of a game, with perhaps several smaller purchases of expansion sets to myself with much less guilt than what I felt during my attempts to get into subscription gaming in the past.

Okay, two questions:

1: Why would anyone want to be something that isn't a space marine?

2: Is anyone, anywhere, doing anything surprised by this?
To #1: because while Space Marines have had their sense of fear literally burned out of their brains, the Imperial Guard faces the exact same situations with few modifications and little protection more than a flak vest and an angry flashlight. Space marines are made into badasses, Imperial Guard are born badass.

This is the most expected thing in history. Imagine if they DIDN'T have the Imperium of man as a playable race... Epic lulz.

Anybody else notice they took the warp translation sequence from Dawn of War? I know it's a minor gripe compared to everything else, but still.

On Topic: Excellent trailer! I agree with what you said about the Space Marines and Imperial Guardsman being on the same side, Rusty Bucket. There still are other factions with more swarmy people that would need to be balanced. And, on that thought...

U CAN HAZ SPECULATION TIEM NAO!!

So, it looks like at least one enemy race is going to be Chaos, so following a three character classes per race patter, the player classes could be:

Chaos Cultist/Renegade Guardsmen: Analogous to the Imperial Guardsmen.
Chaos Sorceror: Analogous to the Techpriest
Chaos Space Marine: Analogous to the...um...Space Marine.

From there we could continue to guess on other races, although if they all fit my current pattern of thinking it would just be:

Swarmy guys: Eldar Guardians, Tau Fire Warriors, Various 'gants, Necron Warriors
Supporty guys: Farseer/Warlock, Ethereal, Zoanthrope, Lord
Badassy guys: [Insert Aspect Warrior of choice], Crisis suits, Tyranid Warriors, Immortals

And, if it were like that, they could just end up being re-skinned versions of each other over and over again, but that would be okay for balance reasons, but it wouldn't allow much strategic depth between each races builds. But, then again, I put Necrons in the list of examples and you'd have to pull a lot of crap out of your ass just to make Necrons seem customizable.

Based on the E3 trailer there'll be Orks and the Imperium playable, so this isn't really a surprise. But hopefully they'll have some others as well - it just wouldn't be the same with just the two factions as player characters.
