My idea is a race of people called the Manitou. (this is taken from native American folk lore)
They are like the 2cd edition Gnomes (You know before they became short elves).
They have a tall face with usually long noses. They have small thin hands with there middle fingers being extended (Like an aye-aye). They also don't wear shoes (Like hobbits). There tinkerers and great craftsmen. They enjoy dwarves and tend to live near them. There considered small creatures.

There stats are.
+3 Dex
+1 Int
-3 Str
-1 Cha
Now my question is, does this work?
Are the stats a good idea or do they just scream TWINKOUT!?
Does the race seem like a fun idea in a D&D setting?

So we need gnomes who are more gnomish, but with some hobbit mixed in?

Doesn't sound very original IMO, but their lore or quirks of character may set them apart.

No, it doesn't seem fun since the +3 dex is kind of ridiculous, and the minuses can be built around in a twink character, but then I'm coming from a 1e and 2e background where +1 stat bonuses are amazing.

Why do the little folks always get to be so dextrous?

+3 Cha
-3 Dex
+1 Str
-1 Int

Now we're talkin. At least the manitou are. THey talk alot. And people seem to like them. But god they'll drop their mugs at least four times in a conversation.

XD yeah a big stat boost.
I came up with this race because i needed a race that had created guns and gun powered theses guys fitted it. Also i hate 4th ED Gnomes like a ton.

Eh, between the Dwarves, Gnomes, Halflings, and Kender, I think their are plenty of "small" characters. Not even going into Faeries and such. Make them human-esque, kinda like Magic's Veldalken. They're kinda like scientifically inclined fish people. Very cool.

Well Dwarves arn't small size creatures anymore but yeah i see your point. Human-esque? Like just human sized?

Well 4th edition makes a specific point about not including negative. Just a flat +2 Dex and +2 Int or +2 Wis would be more within their design philosophy. Whether or not you believe in that is certainly another matter. You would also need to think of some kind of racial powers if you are specifically designing for 4th.

The stats don't really work for 4th edition, but only because they're underpowered. WotC has sort of a template going with the playable races and the way it goes is this...1) You get +2 to two different stats(Unless you're human or you have something to compensate for something else, like the human's defensive boost). 2) You get a +2 bonus to two different skills. 3) You get around two unique abilities for your race. 4) You get a racial encounter power. There aren't really any stat penalties anymore, just things you don't get a bonus to. Fun idea for a race, though.
