Oh, and this more or less sums up my general sentiment. I'll just quote you and be done with it. Skyrim is overhyped. I am more than willing to bet that it is going to be a colossal disappointment. It's what happened with Oblivion, it's what happened with FO3, and it's going to be what happens with Skyrim. Pattern recognition people, use it. It's one the biggest reasons why humans didn't get nommed so hard off the food like something that got nommed off the food chain (is the past tense of "nom" with one 'm' or two?).
are you an idiot, forgetful or just trying to be edgy? As soon as it was revealed that Fallout 3 was an FPS people threw a god damn ***** fit. It was expected to be a shit version of an amazing series of games. I went in expecting shit, came out with roses. Not the best roses, but roses. That was a great experience.

Also, there have already been a shit-ton of in-game videos of skyrim. I can already see the drawbacks(kinda boring generic landscape, pretty, but boring) and I can see the awesome(random dragon attacks that aren't scripted, personalized side quests based around your character's abilities, combining spells through dual wielding, a "better" inventory system, conversations with characters that don't involve them locked into place staring at you). I know what to expect, It's just the things I expect are kind of great. At least, they seem better than most of the other things I've played this year.

You only need one reason. It's a new TES game. And therefore it's GOTY material. But somehow I think I'll have more fun playing Saints Row The Third.

I'm glad we have this discussion long before the game is out. Seriously, there are a lot of good-looking games coming out around November and I wouldn't start discussing GOTY favorites before actually playing them.

Skyrim needs modding. Give it couple months and then look again.

...DX:HR? Really? I found it pretentious. The interaction between the player and the game felt too ..pretentious!
Sorry...what? Explain yourself? What do you mean by pretentious, because I don't ever remember the game interface trying to impress me with its culture. It was a game interface.

Highlights for those who dont want to read whole article.

The Side-Quests Are Better
Dual-Wielding
The Graphics Are Amazing
A World Living Around You
A Story Not Etched in Stone
F?king Dragons

Skyrim looks 10 times better than Oblivion can't wait :D
Can someone tell me if they've actually fixed the retarded leveling system? Otherwise regardless of anything else they do to the game it will be crap. Just as Daggerfall, morrowind, and Oblivion were before it (why do I keep buying these games!)

It is a little pretentious, but only a little. The game more or less lives up to its pretensions IMO.

As for impressing us "with its culture" i think perhaps you're not entirely understanding the word "pretentious", allow me to supply a definition:

Adjective: Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.

i.e. making out that its better than it is in some way.

I dont know about the gameplay being pretentious but its a plausible charge at least on the delivery of the story elements and the characters plus maybe the aesthetic. Still, a little pretension is better than just not trying at all. Far better.

It's not out yet, nobody has even played it and it's already being rated game of the year. It's the top rated game when I turn on my 360.
The era of judging a game based on content is OVER. Bring on the empty hype machine.

Because DX HR had boss fights and because space marine was fun, but not revalatory. I don't see how any other game can be in the running.

Isn't it great to have so many cool games to argue about?

Of course Skyrim will rock enough socks to be a contender, but GOTY? even Beth fanboys like me have to appreciated the excellent competition this year.

But Jeez you should have been there in the 80's . Retro games are fun but we have definitely evolved. This generation of games DX3, Arkham Asylum, Battlefield, COD and free-to-play MMO's make this a great time to game :)

Gaming and loving it!

Dual wielding and good graphics do not a game of the year make, neither does just 'doing what oblivion did only better' for that matter. Innovation people!
So just doing exactly what people expect of the series, but much better isn't worth goty or praise. I suppose I should expect sequels to not reflect their previous iterations at all. Of course, Oblivion didn't have you fight dragons randomly, didn't have you learn dragonborn abilities like slowing time, didn't have you combine spells while casting to make more potent/interesting combinations, didn't let you simply walk away from having a conversation with someone if you got bored of them.

But whatever, everyone knows skyrim is just going to be oblivion, but pretty.

Yes, I was making a passing comment about the use of the word "pretentious" to define a hud, especially DE:HR's. It doesn't wast time trying to impress. It was minimalist, showing ammo, inventory quick keys, hp, and a map. Occasionally it showed updates to a quest or experience gained, but I would be a little upset if it didn't. I honestly can't see how this can even be misinterpreted as "pretentious," as everything displayed is there with good reason and isn't flashy(it's minimalist).

When I asked him to explain yourself, I was asking him to point things out that made it seem pretentious. The story presentation is, well, typical for games today. I don't see how it is pretentious in the least.

Would you like to explain it, and by that I mean point some specific things out?

A. I think your reasons are shallow.
B. I agree it will a strong contender though.
C. If or if it is not a GOTY game there will be a GOTY rereleased version of it with all the DLC wither we want it or not.

There's already so much talk about the hype of this game that I might throw a few of my cents in here as well.

Even though I am not a fan of the Elder Scroll series and by God I have tried to get into them, the games cater to people that like to play RPG's in first person mode, which really doesn't immerse me in any way shape or form(it was the same with Fallout games).

Skyrim looks to me like Oblivion 2.0(the setting is different, better graphics),but after watching the whole demo it really led me to believe the statement written above.

Witcher 2,for example,so far has managed to do an "unique" type of storytelling that I haven't encountered in any other game, where the choices throughout the game are not black and white(good/evil),but rather shades of gray.

I'm also surprised that no one mentions Diablo 3,which by Blizzard's news seems they plan to release this in 2011.I know it can't be called an RPG(same as Mass Effect and some other titles),but it's always shoved in that category. And trust me,Blizzard community is far bigger than Bethesda one and if they wanna get GOTY for Diablo 3 they will.

Tl;dr There are far too many good games that have been released/are about to get released to be able to start speculating about GOTY contenders.

1: But are they "good"?
2: Who cares? Most people will probably wind up using a shield anyways. For that matter you're giving them too much credit for something that was overdue in the last game.
3: Meh. Graphics don't do much for me. They all get outdated eventually is all.
4: They promised that last time and all I got out of it was quest NPC's getting killed by the town guards for stealing onions.
5: What's that mean? You mean to tell me we won't all have the same objective of dragon hunting?
6: Shrug?

7: I didn't really like Oblivion as much as Morrowind. So saying it looks ten times better isn't saying much to me. I'll adopt a wait and see attitude. Which you should be doing before proclaiming it game of the year.

not trying to be a buzz kill or anything but even if Skyrim gets perfect 10s across the board i still wont be buying it...atleast not initially anyway....Saints the Third and Halo Anniversary are the way more anticipated November releases in my personal opinion

It has to compete with MW3 and BF3, both games with strong backing despite how shitty the product is.
Well, we ARE looking at the voting bodies that chose Uncharted 2's cinematics over the entirety of Assassin's Creed 2, so they might just break Bethesda's winning streak out of fanboy spite.
