Well, at least they got System Shock 2 right. Needs more Amnesia though.

But MineCraft, really? Serious Sam is scarier than MineCraft, and that's saying something. Tons of games out there more worthy of that spot.

(You have to scroll about half-way down)

Their list?
System Shock 2 (1999), Clive Barker's Undying (2001), Condemned: Criminal Origins (2005), Transylvania (1982)and Minecraft (2010)
This is the Toronto Sun we are talking about here though...you know that newspaper that has to have a pin-up girl at the back of it just to sell copies =S ...So I really wouldn't hold its opinion on anything that high, especially video games.

Ok, I'll list my top 5 scariest then.
1. Silent Hill 3 (tied with Silent Hill 2 ok?)
2. Fatal Frame 2
3. Eternal Darkness
4. System Shock 2
5. Resident Evil 3 (Mostly because Nemesis is really persistent)

Minecraft is the only game that has made me jump this year. So yeah.
Minecraft (survival mode) pulls you in like most other games don't.
Examples:

- digging a huge cave and not setting torches thoroughly; the shadows make me feel really uncomfortable and the walls seem very confining - claustrophobia
- building on great heights (horizontally), only to take a step too far and fall down - a sort of acrophobia
- when night falls and you hear steps/movement
- when you break a cube, only to find sand falling down
- creeper sounds

It might not be a REAL horror game, but it pulls you in just so perfectly, you actually get different feelings whilst playing - fear and horror are some of them.

My "Top 5" List:

#5 - Resident Evil 3 (the first RE game I played)
#4 - Fatal Frame 2
#3 - Amnesia: The Dark Descent
#2 - Silent Hill 2
#1 - Minecraft

P.S. I heard "Dark Fall" is a pretty creepy game. Has anyone played it?

Heaven forbid someone makes a "Scariest Games" list where they don't simply conform and copy every list ever created. Yeah, Silent Hill was scary. We get it. Resident Evil was virtually the first "Survival Horror". We get it.

Minecraft is scary at times, for the reasons mentioned in the article. The isolation will affect you at your core, in a way that will make your psychological issues bleed out. Mostly because it leaves you to your imagination 100%. It's the old "dark forest" and "don't stare into the abyss too long" adages. Don't venture or stare into the dark too long, because the dark will stare back at you, and the darkness is actually yourself, etc. etc.

Pretty much this, and the author was intentionally staying away from games that are on everyone's lists.

Something tells me most of the people posting in this thread haven't ever played Minecraft. Play it on hard, singleplayer; the game is actually scary as hell.

Yes, I do love horror games and I play them all the time.

there's your problem. The Sun chain of newspapers. that newspaper sucks the big one and most of their writers are retarded. I hate you Steve Simmons.

I haven't played the first Condemned, but I have Condemned 2: Bloodshot and I find that game pretty damn scary. I guess I should try and beat it again after I lost my save.
The first one is alot better, in the second you're sort of capable but the first it's kind of that vulnerable feeling throughout. It's more of a psychological thriller than sheer horror but depending on who you are that can be a lot more tense. I'm not so good with these games but I had to know what happened next, and so my treck through sewers, and crackhead malls continued.

It's a great game though, especially if you like the second for the atmosphere. Warning: the gameplay is a lot different.

Newspaper compiles top X list that seems to prove they have never even heard of a computer and got their information by Googling the keywords.

Film at 11.

Dude, have you ever PLAYED Minecraft? Scary as fuck.
I haven't played it, but my brother has subjected me to several hours of watching him play when he was using the tv as a monitor. Its soooo boring. :| Or maybe he was doing it wrong.

come on, you cant just say "newspaper" and not tell us WHAT newspaper! incidentally, not a bad list. personally would have but silent hill 3 instead of transylvania

edit: ah never mind, as soon as i posted this, your post was magically edited to include the newspaper. does canada have better newspapers than america? discuss.

side not: the spell check tells me canada is spelled wrong, but america isnt? discuss.
just to help you along. I am from the Toronto area and the Toronto Sun is a crappy newspaper that is usually full of spelling and grammar errors. One of their main features still is the SunShine Girl: a picture of a random pretty girl in a bikini that one of their photographers decided to turn into a model. Many people generally just flip to the one page with the girl on it, take a peek, and then leave it at the news stands.

Whether or not this is considered a good thing I am not able to decide on behalf of the rest of the population.

As for scariest games....
If there isn't a mention of the words Silent and Hill together then this person has clearly not gamed very extensively

Hmmm, well I usually only played when it was around midnight, or even at around 2-3 in the morning, when everyone was asleep so I could get a good scare from it. Though, me and dad would sometimes play it all night (because he's awesome lol), and we'd end of waking up my siblings with random bursts of "SHIT SHIT SHIT, WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!" even when it'd be nothing at all but the dog walking around, or the cat jumping off the bed.

So if I can get that same reaction from the first, I'll sure as hell pick it up.

For people not from the Greater Toronto Area, the Toronto Sun is a rag of a paper with weekly pin up girls and sensationalist articles. I wouldn't pay much heed to anything they say.
