I'm still kind of peeved that Super Mario Bros. was left off the list. Does anybody remember games pre-super mario bros? one screen affairs? Super Mario Bros was a revolution in terms of what we thought was possible with videogames. Easily on par with the transition from 2d to 3d.

WoW is there cause of the massive impact it caused in the MMO market and gaming market. WoW made MMO's popular and a viable gaming genre.

Yes there was MMO's before but none matched the impact of WoW. Not saying that WoW is the best and has revolutionary gameplay but its for sure the most popular and groundbreaking one in terms of media and user-friendlyness.
What revolutionary gameplay? You grind your ass till 80, just so you can grind some more. And there's always someone better who spends twice as much time per week as you do.
I didnt say it had revolutionary gameplay...

Blah, the list is pretty pathetic, as I would expect from a non-gaming site trying to jump on the gaming bandwagon to stay "hip and cool" with the teenagers.

Really, Wii Sports? Wii Sports didn't change the gaming world. They probably just looked at the sales and said "WOW! Look how many copies!" and added it in. Duh, of course Wii Sports sold a lot, it was FUCKING BUNDLED WITH THE WII! To most people, Wii Sports was just a fun diversion until they could afford some other Wii games. No doubt about it, the Wii sent shock waves through the game industry because it attracted a whole new, untapped audience with older people who normally wouldn't play games, but I still wouldn't say that Wii Sports was what did it.

Really, The Sims, GTA III, Super Mario Bros, even Final Fantasy are all much more influential and they didn't get listed.

Doom, no, DDR, no, the rest are understandable but there are other games that have done far more for than those.

There is a disturbing lack of Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter, Super Mario Kart etc.
And this is arguable, but didn't Wolfenstein 3D change the world more than Doom?

Yahoo posted a list of this. While the games they mentioned do deserve to be on a list (although I think that Everquest would be a better candidate than WoW) there are some GLARING omissions in my opinion, such as Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter 2, GTA3, Sims games, etc.

glaring omissions according to you, this is a list by the yahoo boys and girls, of course its gonna be different to your list, please remember that!, I only beat down on you before I put what I think and I get flamed by randoms.

Yes, Yes, Yes, we can all argue about what game we think changed the world. Its an opinion. Dont post everything you have seen (alot of people use yahoo). Just think about what people will find interesting before you post. Thanks for sharing though.

not really, Wolfenstein was before Doom, but it didn't bring "murder simulation" to the masses, the dreamcast had a built in modem several years before the xbox, but it didn't bring online to the consoletards. Hopefully you see what I mean?

so people of this thread, what are your 7 games that you think changed the world.

Wolf 3d VS Doom has no correct answer. Wolf 3D was the spark needed to light the Doom bomb of popularity, but would the genre be as popular as it is without Doom? Likewise, without the spark of Wolf3d, would the genre even be there to begin with?

I agree with your editions except for sims. It was popular, yes, but only with a comparatively small niche in the entire video game market.
Wait, what? Comparatively small niche? Maybe if you don't count most of the people who played it as gamers (which would be silly). That game did fantastic.
Yeah last I checked, wasn't it the best selling PC game of all time?
This reminds me of how when you buy an atlas made in a certain country, that country is invariably bigger on the atlas than it actually is compared to everything else. We message board gamers exist in a niche, its easy to overlook just how many people played the Sims (because it's not 'hardcore' or something). The Sims was freaking huge.
I admit defeat. Perhaps I have some residual anger over having to maintain 18+ friends.

rubbish, Ultima and EverCrack (it got called that for a reason) were hugely popular and brought the masses in in the first place, WoW just perfected the idea and now holds the genre by the throat.

Don't forget that WoW was simply a more attractive game in the aesthetic sense. Not nearly as boring looking as the typical swords and sorcery MMO. I'm sure that helped it catch the eye of many a Gamespot-traveler.

I don't know, I don't think it's such a bad thing to have Yahoo compiling a list like this. It's a list of games that changed the world, as in, the REAL world, not the the gaming world. Obviously gamers would pick a very different list. I think it's good to have an unbiased, non-gamer create such a list.

Yeah but come ON.. Omitting Super Mario Bros is just inexcusable. I guarantee you that more people have heard of Super Mario Bros than they have World of Warcraft, and definitely DDR.

What is DDR doing there? I have yet to see one live, I've seen tens of schools in my country, none of them considered a game an alternative to dancing or anything.
They implied that it was the first of its kind which blatantly isn't true. One of my mates had something like that for the NES way before that came to be and I doubt that would've been the first of it's kind either.
You're thinking of the Power Pad. You could argue that the Wii Balance Board has more roots with that than DDR does.

Even if that was the case, the list still fails. Why is there no GTAIII? GTA is the modern Mortal Kombat; it is the definitive whipping boy when it comes to anti-game legislation and all the "games are bad and make innocent people murder" arguments and studies. Every time someone like Jack Thompson goes on a rampage and tries to get stricter regulations on games, GTA is the very first game they mention as the end all, be all "proof" of the game industry's supposed depravity.

Or what about The Sims? The Sims is one of the best selling PC game franchises of all time, and drew in tons of "non-gamers." It was the first game that had a very significant fanbase of female gamers. A girlfriend of one of my friends won't touch any video games we play...Yet she can spend hours playing The Sims. There are a near countless amount of people just like her who were addicted to The Sims back in the day, and probably still are now, who normally wouldn't play video games. This actually applies to pretty much ever "Sim" game, like Sim City.

Or Tetris? Tetris is another one of those games that even non-gamers play all the time. You can buy cell phones with Tetris on them! Tetris was also the Game Boy's killer app, and is generally considered to be one of the main reasons why the handheld was such a huge hit over its competitors. In a way, Tetris is what made the entire Game Boy line what it is today. Tetris is often listed as one of the most popular video games of all time.

Or Super Mario? Indeed, any Mario game. Mario is listed as one of the most recognized characters in the world, up there with Micky Mouse and Buggs Bunny. How did Mario not change the world?

You see my point? Even from a non-gamer perspective, this list is pretty weak.

Well, when you think about it, everything in the world conducts change of some kind, and so this "7 Games that Changed the World" thing is really just a buzz-line that is intended to induce sensationalism.

It's really easy to write too:

Seven Cookies That Changed The World (according to me)
  • [li]Chocolate Chip
[Yadda yadda yadda as to why.][/li]
    [li]Oatmeal Raisin
[Yadda yadda yadda as to why.][/li]
    [li]Peanut Butter Crisp
[Yadda yadda yadda as to why.][/li]
    [li]Oreo
[Yadda yadda yadda as to why.][/li]
    [li]Snickerdoodle
[Yadda yadda yadda as to why.][/li]
    [li]White Chocolate Macadamia Nut
[Yadda yadda yadda as to why.][/li]
    [li]Lemon Sugar
[Yadda yadda yadda as to why.][/li]
And despite the fact I didn't really do anything here, you're probably getting hungry.

So's your mom!!! haha, burn.

Seriously though, I completely forgot about Tetris. Good call.

question - what came first, super mario 1, or prince of persia (original)? those are the 2 earliest games I can remember that didn't operate consistently on the same background.
