Wow, no.
Family Unfriendly Aesop, much?
The kid shouldn't be forced to attend church if he doesn't want to.
I'm not saying you shouldn't force kids to do things that are good for them (like eating something other than ice cream,) but church is just not one of those things.
So you're saying you would leave a 7 year old child at home alone? If not illegal that's very neglectful and irresponsible, especially since the child appears to think it's okay to steal his dad's car.

the tone that reporter uses when she mentions games is probably how people talked about nazis during the war...i don't know why but i really can't take people seriously when they don't even bother looking into different things they are not generally interested in to be able to give a opinion at least.

Even i, with some of my friends ended up watching twilight so we can have something to back up when talking about how bad it was...

turns out it was worse.
The effect was complete loss of interest in bashing a movie that doesn't deserve the time it takes from you to watch it (you can see that after watching the girl...whatever her name was, fall 3 times in what is supposed to be something i can't understand really)

...talk about randomness in comments :p

I think it'd be logical to assume that his dad would want him to follow the faith. The kid's just seven years old too. Can't leave him at home unless there's someone to watch him, and I'd assume the rest of the family is at church too...

Also, this kid sure as hell didn't learn from GTA. The cars in that game handle nowhere near realistically and I hope to dear God that a church-going father would be smart enough not to let his tiny kid play anything of that sort (otherwise I've lost my last drop of hope for the current parents of humanity)

BULLSHIT-TACULAR, I mean I realy doubt he could have learned how to drive a car playing video games. Firstly he would have had it on automatic when playing the game and secondaly I don't no how thumb sticks would teach you how to steer, unless he played the games using the steering wheel, even then the handeling in game is vastly different to the cars in the real world.

I bet it was Gran Turismo (spelling?)/Midnight Club with a wheel and pedals. At least that is first guess. Not GTA... and I HATE GTA yet I am defending it. Wow...

It it should be noted that on one of those little info popups it said that he learned to drive from videogames.

I...I'm not sure what to think about this. Although one thing disturbed me.

He hated church enough to hijack his dads car, yet they would bring him anyway?

PS: I'm having a glitch where if I try to read a topic I get a popup that says "failed to open page, aborting".
Church=brainwashing. That's why parents force their impressionable children to go. Get them early. Once it has become habit they generally just keep going whether they believe or not.

I've got a friend that's like this, doesn't believe but attends mass each and every Sunday out of habit.

Right, right, I'm sure God would want you to drag your kid somewhere he hates to do something that could be done at home in five minutes.

Like I said, I'm pretty sure God wouldn't care if you stayed at home and offered a five minute prayer for your kids sake.

It very well might have been okay, if extreme, to run away. Forcing your kid to go to church is like forcing him to join a football team.

I love how the news anchor immediately jumped to Grand Theft Auto when the officer mentioned he'd been grounded from a video game.

"We understand his father had recently grounded him from one of his video games which involves operating vehicles"
"Oh like Grand Theft Auto?"
yeah. with the thousands of games all and only about cars, she steers straight toward the M-rated beat-em-up. probably cuz that's all they get of games in the newsroom...

They need to make a video game about this kid - "Atheist escapades", where you have to sneak past nuns Splinter Cell style before driving away Mario Cart style, avoiding the blue shells, I mean bullets that the police fire at you - before going home, cracking the safety codes on his dads computer and looking at gay porn.

Man that game would rock the kaz-bar!!!

It's not completely about whether God cares if you spend 5 minutes to pray or hours at church. It's how strictly the dad follows the faith (and child abandonment laws or some such, but we'll leave those out for now) I don't think he'd be fine with a simple 5 minute prayer as opposed to a full sermon. I'm definitely not saying it's right to force a kid to do anything (atheist here), but there's really not much he can do about it. The most he can do is probably wait till he's old enough to stay home himself and hope his dad listens to his "I don't really want to follow your faith" speech.

Oh my God, what a *****! I can't believe she had the nerve to mention GTA. Has she never played Forza 2, Midnight Club or Project Gotham?

Who'd of thought that when a non-gamer reporter was having a discussion with a Police Officer about the crime of Grand Theft Auto that Grand Theft Auto would be the first game to pop into her head?

She's really clutching at straws there, and she should be forced to sit down and play many, many video games and memorise all the categories on Gamefaqs, just so that the next time she's discussing a crime, and the subject of video games come up, she doesn't mention a popular video game with the same name as the crime she's discussing.

While there's really no good excuse for STEALING A CAR, I can understand him not wanting to go to church. Little kids should be at home, enjoying their time off from school, not stuck in some stuffy church, listening to some asshole read the same pamphlet's-worth of stuff that's actually useful in the Bible every Sunday. The fact that they went and brought up video games is a load of bullshit, though. You can't learn to drive by pressing buttons on a controller(At least I couldn't). He probably learned by watching his parents, because I'm going to assume he's been in the car with his parents at least once. This whole situation is probably a combination of the kid's fault and the parent's faults, and the fact that whenever a minor commits a crime, people assume video games are involved, is just sad.

What? The Anchorlady acts as if it's difficult to drive a car... driving an automatic is like driving a god damned dodge-em car.

This is why the ESRB exists.
Be just a tiny bit less lazy, and a lot of these things could be avoided.
Of course, its too much to ask for a parent to actually pay attention to how their kid is spending their time...
What? Are you saying his parents should have kept him from playing racing games (that are probably rated E), because of the danger of him stealing their car and driving it to escape church?
I think he means under the assumption that a game such as GTA was involved.
