It is sad, and I would be beyond simple anger if it was my pet. I would have to give in to the idea though that the kid probably did not think about the ramifications. He should be punished.

He snuck out and killed the dog in the middle of the night...

I really don't see what the big deal is all about.

It happens all the time.We'll not exactly like that, but children tend to kill small animals A LOT.After all they are children what the fuck do they know about the value of a life.

He should probably be sent somewhere for some serious mental evaluation, and pending the results of said mental evaluation he should not be allowed to go freely again. Like you said, killing small animals is one of the early signs of sociopathy, meaning this boy could potentially be dangerous, especially as he gets older. If the people who evaluate him think he should be released, then perhaps he should be released (though I think counseling would still be important), and if they think he should be kept in an asylum away from the general populace then the parents should be forced to comply... though they won't.

Also a thought occurred to me, where were the child's parents when this was going on? Shouldn't they be um, oh I don't know, looking after him. I mean he just marched into someone else's garden and killed a dog.

Also isn't a barbecue fork the sort of thing, you would want to keep away from young kids, especially kids like this one.

He snuck over to the neighbors house at night an beat the dog to death SLOWLY. (He is eigh it would take some time) I killed a baby bird when I was four, I picked it up and cushed it, I really didn't know any better. This is WAY different.

I don't think there should be a punishment even though he deserves one. Think about it, prison would make sense but he's too young, and he has no money for fines. I think he needs heavy counseling possibly asylum-esq treatment because this is serial killer behavior

What's with all the therapist and asylum talk.The kid is 8.Sure you knew not to kill something at that age , but did you understand why?
Little kids can be assholes, but it's nothing a good talk from the parents and some slaps can't cure.Hell I knew kids that did waaaayy more terrible things(not to mention children are assholes to each other too, in the worst possible way), but now have famillies of their own and non are psycho killers.Sure some grew up to be assholes anyway, but hell kids that don't kill animals also do.
