80s Music

Ahhhh 80's music, the music I listened to while still in the womb; Billy Idol, Whitesnake, Journey, Ozzie, Metallica, AC/DC. So many bands that I still listen to today even though a lot of my friends who are my age look at me funny when I bring them up.

huey lewis & the news. their first, self-titled album. before they became famous. it sounds like the record every indie-pop wannabe wishes they could make today. it is probably hard to track down but worth the effort.

If you want to see a good diverse collection of 80's music, take a look at the sound track for GTA Vice City. I pirated the hell out of really enjoyed the music in that one. Def Leppard gets a retrospective gold star as well.

Anything by Queen is great. Freddie Mercury is the greatest singer ever, and although it's not technically 80's, Barcelona is probably his greatest work to date. Shame he died soon after completing it, but just listen to this with Montserrat Caballe alongside him. I promise that you won't want to hear anything else ever again, you'll be so overwhelemed by the sheer awesomeness of this song:

-Japan: Kind of like Duran Duran but way darker and some REALLY talented musicians.

-Echo & the Bunnymen: Awesome band (one of my top 5 all time favorite bands). It's like a mix between Joy Division, The Cure and early U2. Their sound is crisp, clean and very energetic.

-Kate Bush: "Hounds Of Love". Very experimental and ethereal pop music (good music to chill out to). A must.

-Cabaret Voltaire: "The Crackdown" and "Microphonies" are two of their most accsessible albums. It's electronic music with a hint of pop. Gotta go slow with them, not for the faint of heart.

-XTC: Go for "Drums and Wires" (recorded in 1979 though, so it's not exactly an 80's record) and "Black Sea".

-Prince: "Dirty Mind" and "Controversy" are my two fav. Prince records.

-Brian Eno and David Byrne's "My Life in the Bush with Ghosts" is a very cool and atmospheric (and crazy) album. You should give it a go.

-The Talking Heads: "Remain in Light" and "Speaking in Tongues" are great.

-P.I.L.: "Flowers of Paradise". If you liked the Sex Pistoles than try these guys; way better than the pistoles IMO.

-Front 242: "Geography", "No Comment" and "Official Version" are THE 3 albums you have to get from these guys.

-Depeche Mode: "Music for the Masses". Although ALL Depeche Mode records are classics this one is by far the best IMO.

-Devo: "Freedom of Choice". Because Devo is so much much more than just "Whip it".

How could've I forgotten such a great band. They might've started in the late 70's, but they thrived in the 80's. Hugely influential, talented and very crazy bunch of guys (ever heard of the Iceland incident?). And by the way; Nirvana ripped off the riff from "Eighties" for "Come as you are",k Killing Joke sued in 1992 and won. I always thought they where assholes for it until I heard "Eighties" later that year.

I like the Pogues. They are the only band that I'm aware of who's whole career was in the 80's that I've liked.

The Spoons, Chalk Circle, Men Without Hats, Bruce Cockburn, Cutting Crew, Corey Hart, Gowan.

A lot of 80s pop/dance came from one- or two-hit wonders. I'd track down a couple of good 80s compilations or anthologies to get them.

John Squire is one of the most underrated guitarrists in Rock & Roll history, as well as Remi, the drummer, who's style is greatly original and fluid (god this guy can drum, have you heard "Where angels Play" and the intro for "Elephant Stone"?).

Kraftwerk - Autobahn - Inventers of techno's finest album

Not to be mean, but Autobahn's from 74. That's how ahead of the curve it was. Sadly, that's also why I didn't list is, as it's not technically 80's. The English version of Das Modell hit #1 in England in 82, though, so the later albums like Die Mensch-Maschine and Computerwelt sort of count.

Great is an understatement, this guy HITS ALL THOSE NOTES you hear in their studio records, yes, I saw them last live year in NYC (with Youth on bass and Paul Ferguson on drums, the ORIGINAL LINEUP BABY). Sorry, but I'm still having seziures caused by the exitement of listening to "Eighties" live.
