000 in australia... nice and simple... there are direct numbers to each of the services, and direct numbers for individual stations nearby, but mainly it's just easier to go for 000

In australia it's 000 yes, but I think that it's also 112 on mobile phones and you can enter that and override any screenlock even if you're out of credits.

Up here in Canada it is in fact 9-1-1. 311 can be used for non emergency , maybe your friend is either touched in the head , or lives in buttfark nowhere since it doesnt reach out to waaaay rural areas
311 service is not available everywhere in Canada, though many places are instituting it to cut down on the number of false calls that get made to 911. 911, however, is definitely the emergency number for everywhere in Canada that I'm aware of. It isn't, however, a direct police line. It's an emergency services line and who they dispatch will depend on what the situation is (though police is pretty much the default).

Of course 911 is not the emergency number outside the US. In Britain, for instance, it is 0118-999-881-999-119-7253. ;)
You just won this topic, sir. Well played! And I think dialing 911 just redirects to Australias emergency service (000) for me. But I have thought it for a split second then went nahhhhhhhh I'm an idiot.

In Sweden, it's 112.
However! If you call 911, you'll be redirected to the emergency center anyways.
Exactly same here in Finland. The emergency number is 112, but if you dial 911 it directs it back to 112. Incidentally, my birthday is 11.02.
112 in the Netherlands too :O

Emergency calls can be made with a locked phone and will not cost any credits.
Oddly enough it's also available when you have no reception. For I can call 112 but not my home phone (it says "emergency calls only" yet I have no reach. Odd eh?)

actually, in the UK 911 redirects to 999. So 999, 911 ans 112 all work here
999 calls the nearest available service
112 directs to the nearest service
So you can ring 999 from London and get emergency services in Manchester if all others are busy

The emergency number in Australia is 000, but so many people watch American TV in Victoria, at least, 911 gets redirected to 000. :p

IT crowd, loving it!
At least I hope it is. There aren't too many shows with ridiculously long emergency numbers. :p

Yup. It used to be 0611 AGES ago, but then the European Union decided it was easier if it was the same in every country. Hence we got 112 now.

Oh IT Crowd.

OT - No, I've never thought it was 911 anywhere other than the US.

112 is a European standard number, and is better than the UK 999, since it triangulates your location on a mobile/cell phone

In new zealand, the emergency services number is 111, but one time out of panic I accidently dialed 911, turns out it re-directs to 111 anyway, so yeah.

Apparently it's quite common for children to think that the number is 911 (from American TV shows such as Sesame Street). Anyway; here in the UK it's either 999 or 112 (though hardly anyone knows about the latter).
It's also 911 in case you didn't know. They had to make that work because American tv is so prevalent that many many people who need to call emergency services automatically think 911 because we hear it so much.

Yet another Canuck to confirm we DO have 911.

In Vancouver, the companie ecomm911 handles the dispatching to the three emergency lines.
