Time to dive into the punishing world of Dark Souls. I'm excited! Finger hovers nervously over the play button on my Steam. Am I sure I want to do this? I am. Let's do it!

"The Dark Souls Executable Has Stopped Working".

Hmmm. Let's try it again.

"The Dark Souls Executable Has Stopped Working".

Okay, let's verify the cache. Aha! A file was missing! Let's try again.

"The Dark Souls Executable Has Stopped Working".

Maybe it's GFWL. I re-download, and reinstall GFWL.

"The Dark Souls Executable Has Stopped Working".

I google the problem and try numerous listed solutions.

"The Dark Souls Executable Has Stopped Working".
"The Dark Souls Executable Has Stopped Working".
"The Dark Souls Executable Has Stopped Working".

In the end, it turned out DSFix was the culprit, despite the fact I had none of the suspected settings on. I reinstalled DSFix and finally got into the game.

Cool cutscene. Little grainy.

I'm in the game! And it's playing in a tiny corner of my display! Turns out this was an issue with in-game AA being enabled. I fix it right quick.

I bumble out into the corridor. The game looks muddy and grainy. A zombie is standing around. I thrash it good, with wild punches. Also, I punch the wall. Take that, Dark Souls!

I eventually emerge into a courtyard with a nice fire pit. The graphics are awful. Something is clearly awry. I log out of the game and tinker with some settings in DSFix. I log back in, and check the graphics settings. Whoops, I'm on 16 bit. The game looks much better now. Onwards!

I find some zombies. These ones fight back, but they just wallop my shield with feeble blows, and are easily dispatched. Easiest game ever! I'm a Knight, by the way. I picked a female, because I prefer female characters for aesthetic reasons. This one is all withered up like a mummy. But a sexy mummy. Ostensibly, anyway. She's wearing a lot of armor.

A big rock falls on me, yet amazingly does not kill me. It does make a hole in the wall. There's a Knight in there. I want to take his gear, but instead I'm meant to talk to him. I do. He gives me some pots, and tells me to leave. You're dying! Give me your geeeear.

More zombies, easily dispatched. This game is so easy!

Another zombie. This one has a shield. I swing violently at the air! Whiff whiff whiff! I accidentally do a roll, then I do two more rolls for good measure, rolling around his feet, and then rolling into the wall. The zombie looks at me curiously and jams his sword into my back. Dead.

Alright then, controls are a little odd. I'm at the fire pit again. Onwards!

All the zombies are back. I dispatch them with style and verve. I get back to my friend Ser Shield, and this time I keep my impotent rolling to a minimum. Down he goes. I try to take his gear. Nothing doing.

There's nothing else in here, but there was some white light outside. Into the light!

Ooh, this is bad. There's a big demon. I stare at him. He stares at me. For a moment, I feel a connection to this demon. A kinship.

Annnd then he knocks out my platform. I fall, I'm stunned. He wallops me with a great big hammer. I'm dead.

Back at the firepit then. Onwards. Oh, I see all the zombies are back. I slap them aside like gnats. Back at the demon. This time, I jump down. I'm stunned. He wallops me a with a great big hammer. I'm dead.

And again.

And again.

I try circling the demon, to no avail. The pad I'm using is making me use the d-pad for movement, and it's almost impossible not to fat finger it and jitter around aimlessly. Besides which, he takes up 90% of the screen and it seems nigh impossible to get out of range of his hammer. I log off to reset my controls.

And I try, and I try, and I try, but I just cannot map the controls properly. X360ce is vaguely impenetrable. I move the left stick, and it cheerfully tells me I am accessing the d-pad. Fucking....fuck...

I mess with my controller, changing modes, re-downloading drivers. After a few mode switches, I finally get x360ce to recognize the stick as a stick. In I go!

It worked! I'm moving with the stick! It's 100 times better, although still plonky. Take that zombie! Take that, wall! Hello, firepit! A huge improvement. I jump down to face the demon, brimming with confidence. Hit Y to assume a two handed grip! No, Y is suddenly A. Right stick to lock on! No, that opens a gestures menu. What the...what the fuck!? I'm dead. I manage to point at him before I go down, like Babe Ruth calling his shot.

Log out. More tinkering, more button mapping. Come back in.

Everything is proper now. I kill more zombies (yawn) and progress to the demon. He kills me.

And he kills me, and he kills me.

I log out, set FOV even higher. Log back in. Now I can at least see him. Do a drop attack, the game helpfully suggests. I push the necessary buttons. Nothing happens. I die.

Eventually I kill him with some wonky circle strafing, repeatedly ramming myself into his butt while wildly swinging. I don't feel like much of a winner, but at least I'm done with this guy. He has a key.

I eventually find myself in a new area, with a new firepit. There's a bad actor by the fire. Hahahahaha! He says, dreadfully. I groan. He tells me I have two places I can visit. The undead have been pushovers so far, so I pick undead.

Whoops, all my button mapping has somehow reset itself. The stick is no longer a stick. I log out, and in, and out, and in, trying to fix it. It takes 45 minutes. I'm super fucking annoyed.

Skeletons, on a mountain path! I charge one, and jitter right off the cliff. I charge the one up top on the next try, off the cliff. Alrighty then. Third time I take it slow and careful. When the guy beside the cliff won't advance on me, I throw a firepot at him. Enjoy your cliff, asshole.

I progress slowly. Skeletons and rats alike fall before my methodical progress. There are parts where it looks like I can easily jump to things. I cannot. I roll feebly into the crenellations. I really love rolling, it seems. I come across a hint. Try rolling! It says. Fuck you, game.

I come across a Firepit. Firepits reset all enemies, it tells me. Well, I don't want that! I proceed.

I come across a musty chamber. There is a warning on the floor. Beware left, it says. I look left. Some kind of storeroom! Must be a trap. I proceed, heedless of the warning, and begin smashing everything in sight. Nothing. There's a chest. Must be a trap! I open it. Nothing. Beware left indeed. I proceed through the archway, and get immediately ganked by a skeleton from the left. Fortunately, he's no match for my wild, aimless swings. Take that skeleton! Take that, floor!

I find my way to a group of foes who are hurling fire at me. I try to bait them out, but they're quite content to just stand in a little bunch and hurl fire at me. I think about using my own firepots, but I've only 5, and no doubt I will need them for some stupid ice monster later on. There's nothing to do but charge. I can take these guys.

I swing wildly at the air, then roll right off the platform into a terrifying gulch. Dead.

And I'm back at the original firepit, with Lord Bad Actor. Haahahahaha! He says. I log off.

Initial impressions:

1. It's not a bad game. Good atmosphere. Combat with minions is fun.
2. Getting it actually functioning is a fucking nightmare.
3. The controls are awful, even with a gamepad. I'm used to precision movement with a mouse. I can appreciate why that isn't possible here due to the way armor affects your turning speed, but I can do nothing but stare blankly in astonishment at the people who refer to these controls as "smooth". I feel like it's me vs the interface as opposed to me vs the environment.
4. I do hate checkpoint saving. It doesn't help that I'm rubbish, so I get to see the same tedious shit over and over and over.

I'm still alright with it, but I seriously need to get over the hump with these controls. The game is a chore to play right now. That's not unusual for new control schemes, there's always a period of adjustment, but this is particularly bad. We'll see how session 2 goes.

Sounds like you may want to play the game with a controller. Trust me, from what I've heard it'll make your experience a lot less miserable.

I think the console versions are supposed to be better. Although I have the prepare to die version on my PC, and it works just fine, even with the Xbox controller I have connected to my rig. I haven't had any graphical problems either. The only problem was when GFWL wouldn't let me play the game because of some stupid internet problem, so I've made do with exclusively offline play so far.
All of your issues with the game itself are ones that I sympathize with- there is a fine line between 'challenging' and 'frustrating' and quite often dark souls falls on the wrong side of said line for me.

I'm playing with a controller.

If the mouse and keyboard is demonstrably worse, it would be outright unplayable. It's bad as it is.

Getting it to work on your system does sound like a nightmare. Sorry you had so many setup problems. That really sucks.

As for the gameplay, I've had the occasional button fail, but I'm one of the ones who says the controls are generally very smooth. Are you using target lock-on? You don't want it all of the time, but it often helps cut down on the wild swinging. Also, it sounds like you need to slow down a bit and get a good look at things. If you're charging in so fast that you're rolling off cliffs, then take it a little easier until you know the layout. Situational awareness is really rewarded in this game, and once you've got it, you can rush through much more easily. And actually, you do want the enemies to respawn--'cause you, Mr. Undead Parasite, want what's left of their souls. Mwahahahaa!

You're right that there's a hump or a learning curve of sorts for most of us with this game. I got really frustrated with it plenty of times, but in the end, I found it rewarding to stick with it. Dark Souls is a smart piece of work, and it definitely doesn't play itself. Good luck with your run.

The controls are unbelievably smooth on console, hrr. Shame that you've had SO many problems though mate:(.
But nah practice makes perfect; you got this>:].
Also loved the special bond you formed with Asylum Demon. He's a bro.

Strange, I've played the PC and Xbox 360 versions, both using an Xbox 360 controller and I've never experienced any of the functionality problems you described and the controls have always felt extremely smooth and intuitive to me. My advice is to get yourself a spear, you can get one very early and you can attack with it whilst still raising your shield so you can block and attack at the same time, making it in my opinion the easiest weapon in the game to use. It won't be completely effective against all enemies though due to its limited attack pattern but for the most part it should make the game significantly easier.

It sounds like your controller or controller program are the issue here to me, to be honest.

I use a normal PS3 Dualshock 3 with Motioninjoy drivers emulating an Xbox 360 pad for Windows, and I've never had issues with the controls being lost or switched around or needing to be re-mapped. It's a bit of a pain to set up in the first place, but after that...

Granted, the game never really controlled smooth as butter, even on the consoles, but my controller has given me the same response and control that the console version would've. And dodge-rolling will be done multiple times in a row if you tap the dodge button in the middle of a roll.

And yeah, DSFix requires a lot of tinkering the first time through, but after you've got it set up properly it doesn't need to be messed around with again afterwards. Generally. Unless you want to mess with it. Or update it, 'cause it resets the resolution/graphical settings when updated.

You look like the type of person who will eventually hate Dark Souls, which is a shame, because it means that the diary will end very soon.

Don't worry about ice monsters or Pokémon-style-battles, the enemies have weaknesses, but usually nothing too extreme.

And get used to the NPCs laughing at you with awkward voices. All the time. It's like a recurrent theme... or badly written dialogues, I don't know.

To be fair to the voice actor, miserably depressed people generally don't sound energetic or chipper, especially when they're laughing ironically at all the horror of the world. Of course, the best voice actor in the game is Sif...one whine and I feel guilty for days. :(

I'm still stuck in the "getting it working" part.

Two registry edits later (?!?!??!????!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!), I've deleted a bunch of my Windows folder (DON'T ACTUALLY DO THIS) so I can fit it on my C drive.

The porting job on it is TERRIBLE.

Why didn't you install it on another partition?

I agree with that, though.

And BloatedGuppy, I'm sorry for your experience, seeing as I was one of the people who suggested the game to you. I'm also sorry I laughed at it. I'm double sorry in general. I had no problems with the controller, though - I just plugged mine (well, my flatmate's) in and it worked.

Well you can try it for yourself but I'd say keyboard and mouse is worse. Well, the mouse, at least. It's jumping around and you can even see the pointer at all times (by default, that is - the DSfix can hide it). Although keyboard isn't as bad, I think.

Because it's supposed to not work on the not-default partition.

Why/How? Only Satan knows.

This, also:

- The bonfires wont reset the enemies when you activate them the first time. They will also NOT heal you or fill your flask, but will work as spawning points if i remember right.

- Yeah, get your humanity higher and use the white signs to summon people to do coop. It will make things much easier, way to easy IMO.

- Not sure about calling mouse + kb viable, but some people seem to do fine.

- Have you leveled up at all? It is done at the bonfires and some more vitality and endurance won't hurt.

- I have been doing lowby coop this days for the lulz (lvl 9 atm). If you want to add me on steam I am going by "Free Gold!!" (DotA 2 reference) this days, have been playing for only a week but have most of the mechanics down. Would be glad to help, especially since you made me laught a lot by seeing your troubles with the first demon :p

EDIT: - VERY IMPORTANT, if you are planning to Min/Max for PvP reasons, knight is a bad starting class. The difference is not significative at all, BUT it's the kind of things that don't let me sleep at night ;)

Also EDIT: - If you like the game, but hate dying, the PC version is very easy to hack with stuff like cheatengine and the Xbox version is even easier to hack by save editing your files. This will however ruin most of the gameplay imo, only reccomended for the lulz.

Well, if you use the 360 controller, it works the same and requires no config, otherwise may god have mercy on you. You can also play offline with no issue, I discovered that because i was toying with mods and dowloaded a couple that required stupid ammounts of vram, that made the loading of the game hiccup and trowed me into offline mode.

Honestly for me the PC version has been running flawlessly and i have had some fun modding textures here and there. Then again, i seem to be lucky for those things.

I installed it on E:\ (technically, in E:\Games\RPG\) and had no problems there. With and without the DSfix, too. It should work with a different partition. OK, maybe I'll have to rephrase that to be clear - if it fails, it shouldn't be the fault of the partition.

Well, mine was on D:/, I did all the other fixes I could find (including REGISTRY MODIFICATION), so I'm reaching the end of my options, and I heard that it can be a problem.

So we'll see.

Never had any of the problems you mentioned, and I'm also playing the supposedly shitty console port. Hmm.

Anyway, have you learned to parry yet? Do that next, if you haven't. It's quite possibly the most useful skill in the game.
Also, rest at the firepit, you fool! -.- Don't ever, ever leave one unlit. Otherwise you're going to keep losing progress and going back to the laughing bad actor guy over and over again.
