Remake FF VII? Why?
My PSOne copy is still up to scratch, so I don't need it.
Anyway, everybody knows FF VII is overhyped. It is indeed a very good game, but still not as 'godlike', 'epic' and 'genre-reshaping' as some claim it to be.
For a lot of people, FF VII was the first final Fantasy ever, main reason for this is that previous FF-games that had a U.S. release were still pretty undergound. With Saturn, N64 and ESPECIALLY PlayStation, gaming went in its process of going from underground to mainstream, reaching maturity in the sixth generation consoles.
So of course this game's gonna look like 'da bomb' if it's the first jRPG you ever played. The game had good graphics (at the time), a solid story and a gameplay mechinism that worked, in other words: a finished product. But check the registers, there were more games like that at the time. It also recieved praise for its inventive 'materia'-system, but even that had its pros and contras. You had complete control over the skills of your character and with careful placing, make him even a tiny god! On the other hand, lack of professions got the atmosphere a bit down (you can clearly see the differences as they brought them back in FF IX) and the constant fondling with materia could also become a real drag.
And a remake? Think about it, with something so legendary, something of which the mythical stories behind it, far surpass the game itself, would it be wise to release it again?
And if they did, how many changes would they be allowed to make? Renewing certain things to be modern and 'get with the times' would piss of fanboys, keeping everything as it was, would piss of newcomers and critics. And did you know that the original script had quite a few small and big differences with what eventually was used in the game? Would people want to keep the altered version, or would they be curious about how things would originally have gone?
Square-Enix knows this and it's the only reason we haven't had an actual 'remake' yet.
