Small, serious, question for those who play the Final Fantasy games, can someone please tell me what the appeal is of these turn based combat games? Sure their graphics are amazing, i will admit that, but for me the combat lets it down. you stand in a line, pick who you want to die and let it happen, the FF games would be so much better if the combat was real time, similar to DMC, Ninja Gaiden, GoW, any of these fast paced combats styles would be epic, but that will never happen. They require timing and skill, because from what i've seen on gameplay footage, Final fantasy is just a point and click style game where the combat is affected by a randomly generated number sequence.
The same reason people like chess or some other board game, it's simply a preferred plays tlye. Real time combat does not always work well, especially when you are commanding a party and not just one character. Turn based is not your thing, while other enjoy it simply "because".

A remake of Final Fantasy 7 would be "good" to make money... fanboys would devour it, and kids these days who dont know how to appreciate the predecessors of the games they play, will get a taste of one-of-the-most badass stories of all time.

But doing it, wouldn't have the same impact as it did in 1997. It was the first american released JRPG for the PSX, and in several of the same pen strokes, was the most substantial RPG at the time for story, gameplay, and re-playability. Not to mention, it was also a Cinematic breakthrough. The CGI cut scenes were like nothing done before. The only thing they lacked was voices.

But, when Final Fantasy VIII came out, Square one-upped itself, but no one heralded it like they did FF7, because by the time 8 came out, the level of gameplay/graphics was the norm coming from Japan. Square set the bar with FF7, and everyone came to bat.

remaking it, would honestly, financially, it is a true gamble. People might not re-buy it... its like buying the Blu-Ray version of something you already own on DVD. You really dont do that unless you are oozing money from your pores, or you happen to absolutely love it without a shadow of a doubt. And in this day and age... since people really aren't oozing with money its probably a larger gamble than people might think.

Novel idea to remake a classic with upgraded graphics/sound.... but their attention could be elsewhere, furthering the company. Sometimes, you can only beat the dead horse so long.

i have recently been in contact with eidos inter active i havent yet been in contact with square enix but this is the email i received back when enquiring about the re make of ff7 as it was still so popular = Thank you for contacting the EIDOS Online Customer Support Team

Thank you for your interest in our games. Our support agents do not have
information regarding release dates of future products, program updates or
patches. Please consult our web page for information regarding upcoming
titles and updates from Eidos at http://www.eidosinteractive.com for release
information or www.eidosinteractive.com/support/index.html for patches.

Occasionally we have recreated a game or released it on another format, for example the original Tomb Raider was recreated as Tomb Raider Anniversary a few years back. But it is a rare case.

Thanks for necroing a thread. Also, Square made the game not Edios. Edios has has a bad habit of re-releasing the same games over and over again to increase sale. A remake is not going to happen of FF7, people need to stop wishing it will or else they'll be as disappointed as all those that pre-ordered Duke Nukem Forever.

Except that the rights to FF7 have been reverted back to SquareEnix many, many years ago.

I knew some of the answers looked familiar. I read this like two months ago.

But it doesn't need a remake. I downloaded it from the PS Store and even with the crappy graphics, it's still better than most of my PS3 games.

No.

Many people enjoy the game, hence they must at least think it is good. The chances of a re-make of it being better than the original are slim, especially if the original is already good. The fans of Final Fantasy will most likely prefer the original, either for sentimental reasons, or due to changes the people made, or did not make in the re-make.

Also, I really don't see the point in making a re-make of a Final Fantasy game. Many people claim that they like the stories of the games, so, making a new game with the same story, but better graphics and sound won't be regarded by fans as being much better than the original. If they alter the story, they risk alienating many fans. Besides, I would think that the fans would prefer a brand new story in the ironically named Final Fantasy series, as opposed to a retelling. In my opinion, there is very little chance that it will either be very profitable, or well liked. Then again, these are Final Fantasy fans, I don't think like them, I don't even know how to try to think like them.

Essentially, don't fix what isn't broken. Or, don't fix what people assure me isn't broken, depending if you are a fan, or either an anti-fan or completely apathetic about the whole thing.

Remake FF VII? Why?

My PSOne copy is still up to scratch, so I don't need it.

Anyway, everybody knows FF VII is overhyped. It is indeed a very good game, but still not as 'godlike', 'epic' and 'genre-reshaping' as some claim it to be.

For a lot of people, FF VII was the first final Fantasy ever, main reason for this is that previous FF-games that had a U.S. release were still pretty undergound. With Saturn, N64 and ESPECIALLY PlayStation, gaming went in its process of going from underground to mainstream, reaching maturity in the sixth generation consoles.

So of course this game's gonna look like 'da bomb' if it's the first jRPG you ever played. The game had good graphics (at the time), a solid story and a gameplay mechinism that worked, in other words: a finished product. But check the registers, there were more games like that at the time. It also recieved praise for its inventive 'materia'-system, but even that had its pros and contras. You had complete control over the skills of your character and with careful placing, make him even a tiny god! On the other hand, lack of professions got the atmosphere a bit down (you can clearly see the differences as they brought them back in FF IX) and the constant fondling with materia could also become a real drag.

And a remake? Think about it, with something so legendary, something of which the mythical stories behind it, far surpass the game itself, would it be wise to release it again?

And if they did, how many changes would they be allowed to make? Renewing certain things to be modern and 'get with the times' would piss of fanboys, keeping everything as it was, would piss of newcomers and critics. And did you know that the original script had quite a few small and big differences with what eventually was used in the game? Would people want to keep the altered version, or would they be curious about how things would originally have gone?

Square-Enix knows this and it's the only reason we haven't had an actual 'remake' yet.

Best game i've ever played, amazing story, great characters. Advent children was amazing as well. I for one would LOVE a remake, better graphics and all, I would pay top dollar for it as well.

I think that they should remake it, it's a good game, gives people the chance to play it without shelling out 80$.

Remakes are bad - imagine if Sonic Team decided to remake Sonic & Knuckles, in the style of Sonic 2006.

The thought makes me want to curl into the foetal position and whimper.

Of course Square could do this and make a quick cash in, but it's really not necessary. Slapping a new paint job on an old game and re-releasing it is never as good as people think it will be.

As much of a square enix fanboy as i am, i'd really rather see them focus their efforts on making a new epic final fantasy. I mean the game is what like 13 years old, with basic polygon technology..It's obvious that it is not a problem outdoing 7 visually. But come on...your telling me they can't write a story or develop in depth characters or write a storyline that can compete with 6 or 7 in what 15 years?? 7 is nostalgically excellent. But it's time to move on. 6 is the only one that desevers a re-make and i think can be built upon or re-shown and still be relevant today, but even so come on..just get your act together square and make a superb RPG experience for us old timers and the new generation. So that everyone understands why you once were the undisputable king of the jrpgs.
