A fondness for defenses.

I find myself in the position as of late that I seem to prefer game wherein you have anything to do with defensive positions and the upgrading of them. Take as an example Company of Heroes, I saw a friend playing it and I saw him placing sandbags, I was captivated. I got the game a short time later and played several multiplayer matches which involved a slow advance across the map with my ally much to our enemies dismay, for I covered a lot of the map in trenches, barbed wire, mines and of course sandbags.

I mean no major point by this post but I just feel a certain affinity to digging in, ranking up troops to as high as they can and letting the enemy through themselves at me with great futility. Take also as a point in case, online flash games which involving upgrades to such a position that very little has to be done, elysian to me.

Still, I was only wondering whether anyone else shared this fondness or knew of any examples of the above.

Edit: Reading that back it seems to be how bizzarely written it is, odd that.

I love a good defensive battle. I think humans have such a will to survive, that we enjoy the adrenaline of being in such situations, and that's represented through our love of these games.

*EDIT* For example, I loved the house defence in Resident evil 4.

I always fight defensively. Build towers, dig trenches, entrench machine guns in said trenches, whatever the game has available for defenses. I build up my forces, wait for the other side to attack fruitlessly, and steamroll over them with a counterattack.

If it's not an RTS, I usually defend as well as I can until the enemy does something rash, then I exploit their mistake.

Turtling FTW! It's the only way I play SupCom FA. It's great when my opponents start trash talking and I squash whatever they send with no harm to me. The best was when someone sent his entire force. When it got close, he yelled ZERG RUSH! At which point all 500 (As I learned later) died at my first line of defense. I sent 3 tech 3 units and killed him. Then he saw my base and the 5 Czars and 2 rapid fire artillery being built and almost finished.

I just love seeing all of my hard work at building a defence work perfectly, as the my opponent weeps at never being able to break my defensive line.

This is why I think that a World War 1 games would bea good RTS, establishing trench lines, making bunkers, esablishing artiliry lines and defending the Western Front sounds like a perfect combination for a defensive RTS person.

Generally I expect myself to hate defending-like-crazy-as-evac-slowly-approaches scenarios.
However, in the middle of the ongoing battle, I usually forget my prejudices and cynically try to figure out a way to abuse any weaknesses. The satisfaction of turning a seemingly difficult battle to your advantage is awesome.

Pretty simple, but fun all the same. I'm not a huge fan of RTS's, or games in the same vain of CoH, but I do see why people find it interesting. I just can't get into really intricate strategy games.

Edit: In case you're interested in another fun flash game, Con Artists Productions also made The Last Stand 2 (and The Last Stand), a zombie survival game.

In online shooters and online RTS's I tend to defend my allies more than myself. I usually do so in light that they will all show the same courtesy back in the match or other matches. Sometimes my exploits just aren't enough to save them though. :/

Ah Supreme Commander, I had quite forgotten that. I like the whole resource system in that and the fact that turrets are so bloody powerful.
Playing as, the I forget the name but the typical human army sort. I remember just building ridiculous amounts of tech 3 and 4 turrets on plenty of islands, covering them in shields etc. Good fun on the whole.

I also tend to prefer having a few elite units than hordes of untrained masses. Seems more worthwhile.
The last stand, I've played them and that is what I mean, but I prefer bigger scale things.

Completely filling a chokepoint and surrounding areas with defensive emplacements and troops, is something I greatly enjoy.
What's even better is seeing foolhardy, headstrong folk crash like water upon rocks in such situations.

I was playing Half Life 2 recently and there are several spots where you have to hold an area with the use of turrets. These are generally rather fun for me, except when I keep dieing and have to start over and over again. That it the one bad side of defensive fighting, when you lose to redo it just starts getting repetitive and annoying.

I love defensive gaming. It's always a lot more fun for me to plan out a strong defense and just wait for the hordes of attackers. I like stuff like Blitzkrieg, where you can make a strong defense, stay there until the main force has been defeated, then launch a counterattack, supported by artillery and rockets.

I seriously want a World War I game about this. I know that trenches seem boring to some, but if makers made it a choice (To entrench, Or not to entrench?), it could be an awesome game.

Hmm. Examples of defensive gameplay in games:

Sophitia's fighting style in Soul Calibur II (excellent retreating moves)
Ness in SSBB (generally reactionary playstyle)
Guile from SFII (four of his best moves are done from block)
Bioshock: lots of traps, tripwires and hacked bots are a passive way of keeping the splicer population at bay

Ah, this takes me back to Lord of The Rings: The Battle For Middle Earth...Playing as Gondor, and turtling up in my safe little base, laughing as the Orc hordes fell to the spears of my Tower Guards...Good times.

I've always been a very defensive player on games. Very often having my style of gameplay on online FPS' seen as "Slow" or "Noobish".
Company of Heroes sounds interesting for that matter and i may invest in it.

A WW1 game does sound fun, though you are faced with how to break the stalemate (As we know sending countless waves over the top, walking mind did not really pay off). Would be quite fun to see Whippets in a game though. I think RTS games are just so much better at pulling this off. Look at Empire Total War, that should be good for defensive fans. Put troops in lines, wait for it... Fire!

Then stab

and then some more.

I also like to fight slowly, defensivly, and thoroughly. Which is why I really hate missions in which I'm timed to accomplish an objective. And I find it a very good tactic to weaken an enemy by massacring them as they throw themselves futilely against a well-prepared defensive position.

I prefer survival type games were I could be holding down an area for one moment and then having to gtfo the next and start running to another safe area. Not that big fortes defense games aren't without there charm.
