A fondness for defenses.

I love defending too personally. If it's done well, and it's my choice.

For example, in Stronghold I love it, building up a nice, huge, labyrinthine castle, putting down towers, siege engines, archers, and everything in just the right places.

In some fps games I also love it, battlefield, battlefront, etc.

However the defending sequences in Half-life must have been the worst gameplay design decision I have ever encountered. I almost quit the game there, and in a number of other places admittedly, because it was just such an awful design, much like mostly everything else in the games, admittedly. It just felt so much like they desperately tried to make the game take longer. If it had been a choice, a lot of enemies are coming your way, here are a few turrets, you can put them up here and try to hold out if you like, then sure, I would have loved it. Now instead it was a chore, run back and fourth between two points, because they're always coming from two directions, use an awful control scheme to try to put turrets where you want them, and wait until the enemy is done. Just awful.

Even Starcraft did that better, in the Terran mission where you had to wait for transportation out. You could just turtle up, or you could run out, and try to fix the situation, or take out a few of the threats, so that fewer can attack you, you were given a choice. Which is damned important.

In command and conquer: Generals I had some real fun turtling up with the American superweapons general. Her turrets are just awesome, and then sending in the alpha bombers to clean up... Feels so right.

I must admit that breaking through such a defence is almost even more fun, in a game that does it well, something like Commandos, Silent Storm, Fallout tactics or the like. To set up a nice coordinated strike, and simultaneously take out three places, fake an attack on a fourth place and sneak inside and take out the leader, or main base, or attack them from behind. In short I guess I love making the most of my resources, using just a few well-placed turrets to defend against a much larger force, a sniper in a strategic location taking out many times it's worth, etc. That's why I like games that require a bit of thinking, with limited resources instead of the regular rts where you can just build up 10 000 000 turrets and have 15 nukes on standby.

I like building/planning defenses.

I cheated at all the Age of empires so I could build mazes of towers and walls leading to each section of my towns (which were all separated) and posted troops at junctions in case I was invaded. I dunno why But I prefer building a city much more than destroying one.

Let me guess, British army?
Unless you mean in Company of Heroes then no, just a fondness for letting things kill themselves. That and I currently have a temperature of 39.6c

Mad editing skills though.
Yeah I meant CoH:OF and I also play that defensive style. But the AI in CoH seriously love tank rushing.

I'm an aggressive defender. I like to push my defense right up to my opponent, as soon as possible, and contain him. Often I make little attempt to carry on with the attack. This way the pressure is on him to either break the defense quick, or I win by economy.

I also like situations and tactics where I sacrifice my troops and resources, but take just a little more from the opponent at the same time. Drag him in the mud with me, break his plans, and keep the initiative at any cost.

Terran in Starcraft are spiritually a great fit for me, though I don't have the dexterity to play the game well in the first place.

Personally I prefer finding ways to overcome other people's defenses more than building them myself. It's much easier to look at someone's defense layout and hold them there while you find flaws and gaps. One little wedge of troops and the entire wall comes crumbling. It's such a gratifying feeling when you crush their carefully planned defenses with one single move.

Red Alert 2 is probably the best game to play on the defense. So many units can be useful when trying to defend like in some maps I would first blow up a bridge leading to my base for early protection and safety against being rushed. Then I could put a few desolators down in their secondary state to make sure no infantry could get near my base. Oh boy that game was bloody terrific.

I love defense games. I love playing an RTS and building up the defenses of one area for no reason other than I like doing it. You should see me play AoE2, its just a maze of castles, towers and walls. With English Longbowmen and Cavaliers everywhere in between.

The first game I thought of when I read the OP actually was a WWI strategy game, albeit a turn-based one: Historyline 1914-18. There really was no other way to play that game, since your computer opponent started with a large advantage in units and resources. They always went for an all-out attack: but was, apparently, retarded. Just like a real WWI general, come to think of it. So you just dug in and used artillery to blow away their rapidly advancing troops, until they ran out, then counter-attacked, spending an hour or so carefully mopping up their minimal resistance with minimum loss of life on my side (Hey, I look after my doods...). Anyway, I found that really satisfying.

Kailsar, that reminds me of a friend of mine. He hates casualties. When he plays Age of Empires, he carefully makes sure none of his troops die, retreat, and have lots of priests around to heal them, it's hilarious. Especially when contrasted with me playing as a russian where I send in a hundred or more cossacks or strelets as a diversion :p

I have the same problem with keeping units alive, I can't stand it when I have units with
120 men
120 men
116 men
It annoys the hell out of me, not helped by OCD (My main thing is brushing against something or touching it, have to keep doing it equally with the opposite part of my body, mainly my hand nothing else... naughty naughty.)

But generally as you may have gathered I prefer a defensive standpoint, possibly followed by a counterattack or just reinforcing the defenses.
It's all good fun.

I always love the 'last stand' defense scenarios in games (and films), I just wish more games ended with one of these rather than a happy ending where everyone is saved. Then again some of the most intense moments I've had in an FPS is charging at the enemy with my teammates or AI comrades by my side, depending whether the game is online.

However when it comes to RTS (I play mostly WWII ones), a combined effort of artillery, air power, tanks and infantry in the attack is definitely satisfying because I can put into practice the sort of strategies I read about.

The thing is, no matter what sort of game it is, in attack I like to have/be on the superior forces because of the challenge and to be able to develop a real strategy to crack the proverbial nut of the enemy defences. Whereas in the defense I like to be desperately outnumbered and see how long I can survive before I'm overrun... both thrilling scenarios but in different ways.
