Gratuitous Space Battles - It's sort of a RTS that's focused solely on things blowing up

Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity - FANTASTIC game, very fun.

Galactic Civilizations 2: Endless Universe - The best 4X game out there.

Homeworld 2 - Great game from a great series.

Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption - Cool RTS

Imperium Galactica 2: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperium_Galactica_II It's old but it's very fun, turn based but I really liked it.

So I just tried the Sins of a solar empire demo and I found it really fun. It's pretty close to what I was looking for so I may pick it up at some point.

One question though, I notice that there are 2 games, Rebellion and Trinity(I think). Any advice on which one I should get?
Trinity is Sins Vanilla, Sins Entrenchment and Sins Diplomacy all in one.
Rebellion is an as-of-yet unreleased (I believe) standalone expansion for Sins. Don't know if it has what Diplomacy and Entrenchment have, but I'll have to look it up.

Entrenchment adds Starbases to the game, as well as minefields, anti-structure torpedo cruisers and extra tech for all defences. Diplomacy adds in diplomatic cruisers, which have abilities that let your race gain an advantage by some means or other, without actually having ANY weapons (Correct me if I'm wrong, haven't used them in a while, but diplomacy cruisers have 0 weapons at all, unlike colony and scout that have weak ones), as well as a new relationships system for the diplomacy page, and the ability to put a pirate bounty on an enemy planet to cause a raider force to attack them there and then (One time, did 20K on some guys planet... Lets just say it made normal pirate raids look like a wedding with one attendee).
Rebellion is set to add in a new capital ship, as well as a unique Titan for each race. Races also split into factions, with rebels and loyalists from each faction each acting as independent races with some different ships, techs and other stuff. In addition, corvettes are being added as a apparently mobile frigate like ship [Or something like that]. It also has a new graphics engine.

There is a Beta out for sins Rebellion now, but not the real thing I think (Having just checked), so if you want instant Sins, go with Trinity. Rebellion doesn't seem to be too far off though, and looks epic, so IDK really. Eh, get both.
Yeah, Rebellion is in beta; I just received my closed beta key a few days ago. I've been too busy to try it out yet, but once I do, I might post my impressions here.

Holy crap I didn't think ANYBODY still remembered these games. Good times spent playing this series.

Another suggestion; Star Ruler. Indie RTS game in the 4X style, with limitless customisation options. You can ahve galaxies as small or as large as you want, ships as big as planets (or bigger) and it has a full ship customisation with loads of options.

It was a bit unfinished the last time I played it, but that was nearly a year ago and I hear it's had more patches and additions since then.

I can't find Imperium Galactica on GoG.com so I'm a bit disappointed.

The demo was so good, I sunk hours into it.

I've been trying to find it for years, I know the feeling well.

If you're looking for something more up-close and personal than an rts then Freespace 2 is the game you're looking for. It is not only the best space sim style game I've ever played, but one of the best games out there regardless of genre. It's as good as the space sim genre gets and frankly, with the way the genre is these days, might ever get! Freespace 2 is quite possibly the most white-knuckled adrenaline pumping game I've ever played. I bought a force-feedback joystick exclusively for this game and consider it a brilliant purchase, there's just nothing else in the gaming genre that quite matches it.

Fantastic!

Looks pretty good these days too:

And there's an amazing library of fantastic mod campaign to play and enjoy:

Game is available here and the mods you'd want to make the game look more modern are available here.

Hmm, you didn't really point out a genre so:

Starcraft1/2

Eve Online

...

Yeah... not too many good space games being made lately...

Could you, perchance, tell us how the Titans work when you do?

I have the feeling that they will get their own tech tree.

Sins of a Solar Empire!!! but wait for the Rebellion expansion to come out as it has all of the previous expansions rolled in to it (It's a standalone Expansion).

Played a game last night and got my first Titan out.....There about 3/4 of the size of a Starbase and they have SO MUCH POWER!!!!!!

So yeah OP grab SoaSE but wait for Rebellion!

So after trying the demo for Sins of a solar empire, I am going to buy that as it should keep me entertained for a good while.

I have two questions for those who have it though.
Is the multiplayer fun? Is it balanced enough to work and does it have variety rather than just being a race to get the most capital ships or something?

Also can I buy Trinity from Steam and still get the two expansions? They are a part of Trinity right? Not just buy trinity and get them free?
Although I may wait for Rebellion, not sure.

Eternal Silence -- it's free, but you need a Steam version of a Source game (TF2 might work) and I don't know if anyone still plays it
Star Wars Battlefront 2 -- quite fun, quite fast paced, quite addictive, but space battles are only a small part of the game
Halo: Reach -- had one small level space fight level, but it was short as shit and actually pretty annoying.

I'm not a good person to ask for these types of games. But, I don't think anyone has mentioned Eternal Silence, and if the community is still active, I'm sure it's a game you're looking for.

Oh I forgot about that gem. That was a great game that I used to play quite a bit. I haven't redownloaded it onto my labtop yet though but when I last played the community seemed to have died sadly. I wonder if many Escapists have that game, I would love to play it if there were more people.

There is also Starfarer. It's in Alpha right now but the campaign mode is starting to come together. Damn fun game. It's scaled around small fleet actions of anywhere from one to two dozen ships or so. Pretty technical compared to a game like SPAZ or Freespace but once you get the hang of managing your fleet it's a hell of a lot of fun. No real story/missions/economic system yet but it's chugging along through development.

I'm absolutely certain there's nothing like that coming out on March 6th . .

It's a bit old, but Star Trek: Armada II was pretty good at that.

Oh I see what you did there -_-
That is not a space sim, that is a shooter with story.

OT: So I tried SOASE. Other ones now are Homeworld and Freespace, also perhaps Starfarer. Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, you right. It's not a space sim. That's not what he said. He said: "Im looking for a game with some cool space battles in it for me to play, by space battles I mean whole fleets complete with huge capital ships going at it."

That does describe ME3. Now to be fair, he was probably talking about cool space battles he could actively control and that it was the core game mechanic, but I'm a literal minded bastard so I can exploit insufficiently fleshed out questions like that.
