I would have to recommend Star ruler, you can make custom ships which that can be bigger then the suns and you can add unlimited amounts of planets and ships (As long as your computer can handle it and I wouldn't recommend using more then 500 planets unless you are using Sandy bridge Extreme, and I would also have to suggest that you set a limit on many ships you can build since otherwise you should expect at least 1k turrets on every planet that the enemy controls and then your pc will pretty much crash if you are playing with over 500 planets)

It's a 4x game (Large scale, real-time grand strategy set in space)

Im looking for a game with some cool space battles in it for me to play, by space battles I mean whole fleets complete with huge capital ships going at it.
I played Star Wars: Empire at war and really liked the space battles in that game and it's expansion.

Does anyone know of any other games with those kind of space battles?

In addition to Sins, which is fun, pick up Homeworld. Sins is excellent in a multiplayer/AI-skirmish sort of experience, but Homeworld has a single player campaign that is absolutely, ridiculously spectacular. I've had it since it came out, and still play through it once or twice a year.

There is, of course, Sins of a Solar Empire.
Out of interest how is it? its been sitting unopened on my game pile for an age.
It's alright. My main complaint is that the different races really aren't very unique. This balances the game, but it doesn't make it very exciting to play a different race.
Actually, I have to disagree with you here. Especially since the release of the micro-expansions.

I can play the Advent and dominate the game purely through Culture spread. Or, I can play as the TEC and effectively defeat the other players simply by repeatedly crashing the black market and disrupting their trade routes. Or, I can go Vasari and simply out-gun my opponents.

I think the beauty of Sins is, each race has it's advantages, but any path to victory is viable. So the TEC can win via culture, the Advent can win through trade control, etc, etc.

I also like how most battles don't follow a strict rock/paper/scissors formula. You can often overcome any vessels shortcomings, at least partially, by using decent tactics and planning.

The only complaints I've ever really had with the game are:
1:) A lack of a campaign. (odd there isn't one, what with the plethora of themes and backstory)
2:) Games, depending on scale, can at times take hours to complete. Though, this grievance is slightly tempered by the fairly nice save feature. You can save a match at any time, as often as you like, and pick it up later. Regardless of whether you have the same number of human players as you did prior.

So I just tried the Sins of a solar empire demo and I found it really fun. It's pretty close to what I was looking for so I may pick it up at some point.

One question though, I notice that there are 2 games, Rebellion and Trinity(I think). Any advice on which one I should get?
Get Trinity as it's the core game plus both of the micro-expansions. Entrenchment and Diplomacy. Rebellion is a pseudo-sequel, as far as I know. Plus, it'd be better to familiarize yourself with the game-style before diving into Rebellion.

All I played of it was about a few weeks after the initial release. No expansions or patches were available at the time and I found the units of pretty much every race to essentially be identical with different skins.

I don't doubt expansions and patches have changed things, but that wasn't my experience.

I cannot believe that no one has mentioned this yet.

Sword of the Stars, its basically Total War in space.

You get to customize your own ships and everything.

Plus, it is a lot larger than Sins by scale, as instead of colonizing individual planets, you conquer whole solar system (but you only defend one planet)

This game is actually what got me off Sins, the amount of lore and dept just put it to shame!

You can get a demo on steam and the complete collection is rather cheap.

BUUUUUUT do not buy Sword of the Stars 2... yet. I have it and it promises to be a good game.... Once they make it playable.

Watching a couple episode of this play through will help you get to grips with the game.

Battlefront 2 has some decent space battles. The best thing is though there are PLENTY of mods out there that add some epic sized maps, including ones with hundreds of AI which means a crap load of Capitals, Frigates, and even more Fighters.

EVE Online. I could describe what a huge PVP fleet engagement looks like...but that would take hours.

Here is but a taste:

At first I couldn't believe that was the name of the game. But that is a couple different flavors of awesome. I might have to buy, especially since it's playable on Mac!

Edit: I also love the description of the game on Steam:

"Who needs backstory? Who needs resource-gathering? Diplomacy is so last year. Gratuitous Space Battles cuts right to the chase of sci-fi strategy games, and deals with large, completely unjustified space battles between huge opposing space fleets."

Awesome!

Everyone is stuck on Eve and Freespace 2 - Black Prophecy is a space combat MMO that is gorgeous to look at (but very lonely until you get past the single player prologue) and Sol Exodus is a brand new fighter game that is fun single player adventure with a good story but (since my last play) no collision damage

There is also a game called "Star Wolves" which I played a couple of years ago. It was more RPG with you controlling a small fleet composed of a "mother" ship and some smaller ones. You get to choose the characters that pilot your ships and it has a great story and it's open world/sandbox style.

Also this has been my first helpful post in this site. Sorry for that.

Seconded For Gratuitous Space Battles. If you like RTS, then it might be what you're looking for. I'm not a fan of the genre at all, but I got a copy with the HIB I bought.

I would recommend Flotilla, not huge fleet battles, but it is highly enjoyable, with much more focus on strategy than on pure firepower. It's also an indie, and I just love indie games. check it out, if you have the inclination and the $10 bucks to buy it on steam

A really bad time to start with Sins actually..

I say this because Trinity, while certainly worth checking out, does not contain anything that will not be in Rebellion. I'd feel a bit ripped off buying Trinity now with Rebellion on the horizon when buying the latter alone would get me the same content and much more.

Still, it will likely still be many months before Rebellion actually releases, so you may want to give Trinity a go anyways, especially if you can catch a deal for it. On the plus side, owning Trinity gives you access to a discount on pre-ordering Rebellion.

" If you like RTS, then it might be what you're looking for."

What? How is liking RTS in any way associated with Gratuitous Space Battles? The game has literally no RTS elements at all. None. Might still be worth checking out, it's a cool little game, but an interest in it and an interest in RTS have nothing to do with eachother.
