I loved Angel Beats and didn't find it confusing at all. It totally fits the action+drama+comedy category.
Another in this category that I didn't see yet is Asura Cryin'. Both of these are outstanding series.
Clannad = best anime ever for its story and writing quality. Code Geass is also excellent

A anime about a bunch of mafiosi and some gangsters who have aquired different forms of immortality. The characters all are a bit crazy and the show has a great sense of humor.

-for dark anime, it doesnt get much darker than berserk.
-gungrave is also pretty dark, theres not a single point in that show where things are happy.
-gurren legann is a wild action comedy sort of thing. its really kind of a tribute to mech anime. the first third is for the early mech anime was all about action and blowing shit up, then theres a part in the middle thats a tribue to 90's mech anime that was more about a dark story and shit like that, and then the end is them just going crazy. it doesnt really make much sense, but its entertaining as hell
-with the exception of cowboy bebop and fooly cooly (which they occasionally bring back) stay away from adult swim anime, especially inuyasha

Did ANYONE say Ghost in the Shell yet!?!?!! CMON GUYS and you call yourselves anime fans... I'm sorely disappointed... VERY good Anime, if you're also the philosophical type I highly recommend it.
