Dungeons and Dragons online isn't bad... and the separation between Free-to-play folks and subscribers isn't quite as pronounced as it is in some other games.
Lord of the Rings online is on the same business model, so it's probably okay, if you're into that sort of system. I prefer DDO due to it being somewhat true to the D20 system it was named for.

GET EET.
It's an FPS.

OT: Age of Conan is F2P now, Champions Online is also F2P. And Fallen Earth will be F2P in august I think.

World of Tanks
Hellgate: Global
Battlestar Galactica Online
All Points Bulletin: Reloaded

Few of my favourites, littlebit different from those generic fantasy settings.

TF2 is massive, it's multiplayer and it's online.

I'd say A.V.A. and probably Genesis AD

there was also Parabellum Online, though it was taken down since the company had apparently went bankrupt

It depends on what type of MMO you're looking for. Are you into shooters, RPGs, arcade fighters, etc.? A personal favorite of mine would be Dungeon Fighter Online, which is a rather fun blend of an arcade fighter and an rpg.

30 players in a matchmaking system is not an MMO. Then Modern Warfare is an MMO as well as the Battlefield series.

isnt WoW somewhat free now?

I heard LotR: online was good, and I remember it turned f2p some time ago...
other then that, there are plenty of those lately...
I kinda like the late tide of f2p mmo's, though I'm not planning on getting into one...

Suit yourself, I still suggest that the OP get TF2 regardless.
Without a doubt, it's one of the better MULTIPLAYER FPS games out there, and its for free. Best free sammich one can get^^

I've been having fun with Global Agenda, its somewhat different than your standard mmo and is honestly closer to tribes than WoW but its free and there are no game-breaking microtransactions like in some other games.

Yes it's massive, and muliplayer, but crucially it's not massively multiplayer, where you have hundreds of thousands of players in a world.

It also lacks other characteristics of MMOs like persistant worlds. It is awesome though.

I've messed a little with Age of Conan and Champions Online. They're both pretty fun. I even looked at Prius Online, but I can't recommend that.
